“The Great Gaddis, Luxor”
Reviewed 22 October 2011

Recently returned to this Hotel, once again had a fabulous stay. The Gaddis is reasonably priced, clean, with good food, helpful staff and great management. The hotel is at present being re decorated and updated, this does not however cause any problems to guests. The staff and management are helpful, caring and attentive, they aim to make your stay a pleasurable experience, all requests, whether dietry, personal, or just general are possible. Many guests return time after time to this hotel, new guests always state they would return and definately stay here, most of them do return. Another plus for this hotel is the British Conculate has their office here.

The food is varied and caters to all tastes and dietry requirements are catered for on request. There is a beauty salon on site for hair, nails, pedicures, massage and more reasonably priced, the laundry service is excellent and cheap. Also on site is a very nice gift shop. Air con is in all rooms.

The hotel is a great base, safe and secure for your trip to Luxor, as a older woman travelling alone I always feel safe here and have a wonderful time.

Thanks to all at the Gaddis, hope to see you all again soon.

Room Tip: The rooms on all floors 04-09 balconys face the pool, not the main road, the apartments are fabulous...

Only from the open corridor on the 4th floor through a gap in the buildings, or the roof, can you see the river. The Mosque is right next door so the dozen or so speekers make it extremely loud in the rooms especially at 4:30 every morning! Overall I'd have to say the Gaddis is in dire need of some money being spent. It is very tired and in places grubby. On the positive side the staff are very friendly and helpful and the drink prices are half that of the other hotels. Beware the calleche, felucca and taxi operators in Aswan and Luxor as the severe drop in tourist numbers is leaving them desperate and very persistant. Everyone wants your money for something you don't want or nothing at all! In the 2 weeks of our stay we heard 1st hand of at least four incedents of pickpocketing or theft. You have been warned!

Room Tip: Try the Isis over the road.

I had read mixed reviews of the Gaddis on this site, so was pleasantly surprised when I arrived for a week in August '11.

The entertainment appears to be geared towards the resident Brit ex-pats (i'm not a big fan of karaoke), but that's fine...i needed a cheap and clean room for my first trip to Egypt and this delivered the goods on both parts (it worked out at about 10 gbp per night at half board.

I arrived during Ramadan and the Mosque next door provided a nice 4am wake up call for myself. It was a little annoying at first but after the first night I took it as an opportunity to wake up early and enjoy more of the day.

As mentioned, the staff are friendly, and the cocktails are CHEAP!!! I recommend the one with 3 shots of ouzo and Gin inside. Plus you buy one and get one free. I only got drunk on my last night (as it was too hot to drink normally) with some Irish dude. The residents are friendly (if a little odd) but that's OK, it all adds to life's rich tapestry.

The breakfast is pretty awful, but the half board dinner menu is ok, especially for the price. Mostly I at out anyway. it only cost a couple of quid to goto Sofras in a taxi.

One thing I will say though....I wasn't prepared for the massive amount of hasstle as soon as I hit the street...it wore me out pretty quick so I spent 3 days at the red sea (Flamenco Resort in El Quesier) to unwind. That review can be found elsewhere.

In conclusion: Great value, friendly / quirky staff, and a nice atmosphere. And the view from the roof is nice too!

I would recommend this to anyone on a really tight budget, or just to anyone who fancies something a bit different.

Phil

Room Tip: If you want a reasonable view, ask for a roof on the 4th floor (but be prepared to sacrifice wi-fi c...

If the old Egyptian gods chose a place to stay in Luxor,I'm sure Maat the goddess of balance and order would enjoy her stay at The Gaddis as much as I.
The friendly well run ambient atmosphere of the hotel exceeds many of the 5 star hotels I've stayed at and is truely a credit to the manger Mr Hany and his staff.
No request however small is overlooked and its a joy to begin each day enjoying a heartly and healthy breakfast by the pool.
The rooms are tastefully decorated and very well maintained..a rarity in many 5*hotels in Egypt and elsewhere.
I just have one problem with The Gaddis, I dont want to leave !

The hotel bar area really comes into its own with a full on Karaoke run by a lovely lady called Cindy. Cindy will get things going with some great songs (such as Running Bear by Sonny James) and they really are two unique nights!

The staff are very friendly - Ahmed the Captain, and Hany in particular. However they are all great and it is around 18LE a beer and 30LE for buy-1-get-1-free cocktails.

Whenever I am in Luxor I make a point of attending these evenings as they really are just that much fun! Cindy & the staff are a credit to the place!
