“Great Budget Hotel”
Reviewed 10 July 2009

We stayed here from 1st - 8th July 09 and loved it. As people have stated many times the decor is in need of a facelift but otherwise everywhere around the hotel was always clean. Our rooms were cleaned daily and, possibly because we left a few tips for the cleaners, we always came back to some amusing pieces of towel/blanket sculpture. Our flight was delayed on the outbound journey from Manchester so we didn't arrive at the hotel until around 9pm. We were checked in very quickly and decided for quickness that we would have our dinner in the hotel. We bought 6 vouchers for the 3 of us which proved to be excellent value, although the food wasn't that exceptional. Good enough though.

The situation of the hotel is fantastic. As we were on a B&B basis it was ideal for us with a lot of Luxor's best restaurants were well within walking distance. Best of these was The Lantern, just around the corner. Arkwrights is just a few doors up the street and was great for buying water, juice and very nice fresh baguettes for lunch. If you want to go further afield it's easy to get a taxi and doesn't cost much. We used Aly who was very reliable and not a rip-off merchant. I can pass on his number if you contact me or he can generally be found along the street.

The roof-top pool is the thing that everyone talks about and is a great place to spend some time away from sight-seeing. The pool guys are very quick to bring you a mattress and deserve their tips. By the afternoon there isn't much shade to be had around the pool but there is a good-sized shaded area with tables where you can have a bit to eat (or a beer or two). The views from the roof are stunning, with Hatshepsut's Temple in clear view across the Nile.

All in all we loved our stay here. Clean, comfortable with very friendly staff in a great location. Oh, and there's also free Wi-fi!

My husband and I stayed in this hotel from 22/6/9 til 29/6/9 and travelled in from London Gatwick Airport. This was our first trip to Egypt and got a great deal of £180.00 flights and b and b basis at St Josephs. This hotel is a quick 15 minute drive from Luxor Airport. Check In was quite simple and we opted to pay 10 Egyptian pounds(about £1.50) to rent a locker in the hotel safe to store our passports. The guys at Reception were very polite and friendly and spoke English very well. We stayed in room 604, which was fine. It was a large enough room with a double bed and bathroom. the room was cleaned every day and new towels provided. Our room had a balcony overlooking the Nile, which was amazing first and last thing at night.
The breakfast consisted of powered eggs scrambled or shredded, or you could ask for a fried egg or omlette every mornig which we did! There was also bacon swirls, potato cakes, cocktail sausages, toast, sometimes watery baked beans. There was also a selection of jams and fresh melons, cheese and salad. The breakfast was not the greatest we have tasted but at that price we were not complaining. The other diners were all returning to their tables with their plates full, so clearly it satisfied the majority of the hotel guests.

We ate in the hotel resturant on our first night and apart from the Egyptian night on saturday, chose not to eat there again. We found that the menu was not to our liking and that there was not much variety. We were glad that we had not booked half board. But I must stress there were many guests there of a older generation then my husband and I (26 and 28 year olds) who regularly ate in the resturant. If you stay here defo reserve your place on the Egyptian night, the food was amazing and the entertainment was great!

In conclusion, St Josephs is a budget hotel. Yes the decor was a bit dated and EVERYBODY smoked EVERYWHERE but it was a pleasant hotel. The staff worked very hard to please and to stop and talk to you. We found that by tipping the maid every second day 10 Egyptian pounds, our room was delight to return back to. There are many hotels in this area, but you really do get what you pay for.

This is the second time we have stayed there, but both times split our holiday up with a stay at another hotel. The hotel is clean but dated. Our room was ok, but I did complain about the air con, it was ok while running, gave a steady hum. But when the room was cold enough would stop and would start up again with a rattle that would wake me up. I looked at another room that was smaller and darker than ours, over looking the water treatment plant with only a very small balcony. Ours over looked the Islam school. So we didn't swap. Reception said they would get someone to look at it, I am not sure if they did or if I just got used to it but it did seem to improve.
Also complained about the balcony door very loud squeal when closing it, but that didn't improve.
The breakfast is just ok, The meals on the roof terrace are excellent and good value. Drinks are also very good value especially in the cellar at happy hour.
The sun beds are squashed together and there is not much room around them.
If you want a budget holiday and want to visit the sites then this hotel is fine. Staff all very helpful and George in the cellar bar makes excellent cocktails.

We stayed here from June 3rd to June 10th 2009 and it was Fantastic!

We were half board so we had breakfast and a 5 course dinner.

We arrived in the late evening and we had just missed dinner in the main restaurant down stairs so they extended the food service on the roof top terrace for those of us that arrived on the same plane. The food was delicious and the menu catered for all.

We checked into our room and it was basic but clean and after a long flight we just wanted to sleep the room included air-conditioning and a fridge with a small freezer in it as well as a TV, we woke up to a breath taking Nile view with the west bank in clear view on the other side. We were on the 5th floor and the views from the 3rd floor up as we heard from other guests were just as good.

The roof top terrace was open all day and served food till about ten o'clock in the evening, it had a small swimming pool and sun loungers if your wanting to just relax as well as tables and chair to enjoy the Nile view, they waiters offered full table service and they make a large selection of none alcoholic cocktails, soft drinks tea and coffee as well as alcoholic beverages. All brought to you when you were relaxing on the Terrance. St Josheps also offer room service where they are happy to take tea and coffee to your room.

The Tudor Rose restaurant where you could enjoy your Breakfast and dinner is open for all guests and is included in your half board with your 5 course dinner if you were not half board they offered a meal voucher for 6 meals for £45 pounds. This was for 4 courses. The food was lovely it was all fresh and very filling and once the sun had gone down you could enjoy a candle lit meal. The menu catered for all and also had a vegetarian selection with both British and Egyptian food on there and the deserts were just as good. Over the week my partner and I aimed to try most things on the menu and we were never disappointed with what we had.

Every day we would go out on trips and we left before breakfast one morning and we had a breakfast box for each of us that were made by the hotel staff and each box that contained enough for two so we ate one for lunch!

Once we returned we always came back to our rooms with different animals made on the bed by our towels that were made by the chamber staff. All our belongings were safe nothing was ever taken even the one day went we left them some money and for two days we wondered why it was still there and it turns out they will not take anything unless it is given directly so we left them a note and the next day we were greeted by a crocodile with a sawn on its back as his way of saying thank you to us!

There is WIFI service available within the hotel and a bar downstairs which does happy hour between 8 and 9 and 10 and 11. It was small but adequate but I found that I did mainly drink on the roof top Terrance and the restaurant. They do offer a Laundry service where they were dry and iron your clothes.

All the staff were friendly and you could have a laugh with them all, no matter the time or day they always offered help or just a chat to see if you’re enjoying your holiday or to see if there was anything you needed. We were never hounded for tips but we did tip for all our services as it is common practice in Egypt but they were always willing to go that extra mile for you.

Check out is at twelve but for an extra 60LE wich is about £6 you can extend your checkout time till 5pm

This was our first time at St Josephs and in Egypt and once we have the money again we will most defiantly be going back.

Simple, but for a 3 star hotel the service was definatly of a 5 star rating !

We stayed for one week on a half board basis, yes the hotel is dated (think 70's retro!)
We had no problems with our room, the air conditioning is noisy, but we were thankful to have it!, most impressively there was a fridge in the room, and it worked!.
Outside is noisy, our room was on the fourth floor, with a nile view, we sat on the balcony and people watched.

The food was fine. Breakfast was the usual, but they did serve beans and bacon, on alternate days mostly. Dinner in the hotel is four course, you choose from the menu and is cooked, not a buffett standing for hours!!

You do get hassle when you go out of the hotel, but be firm and say NO. Tip is to walk against the traffic, taxi drivers and caleche drivers cant stop.

If you go out of the hotel and turn right there is a little shop Arkwrights (english, fixed price, no hassle!) for water, cigarettes, pop, fruit juice, e.t.c.
A little further is Tutti Frutti (english owned and run tea shop (Hi Christine), fab quiche and pannins, to die for apple pie.
(we sorted out a taxi for the day from here to visit valley of the kings)
At the end of the road is Puddleducks (english run and owned) fantasic food for lunch and dinner.

Overall we were pleasently surprised with the hotel, I didnt feel uncomfortable using the pool. As for tips thats up to yourself, we didnt tip the lads opening the doors, but we did tip the waiters and cleaners. Its entirely your choice.
If were going back to Luxor, we definitely use this hotel again, above all the others, including the five stars (which we've stayed in a few)

stayed at this hotel on 1st to 8th june, check in good rooms clean but very drab.
staff on the roof terrace made rude comments about the female bathers i felt very uncomfortable so did not swim in the pool and did not go onto the roof after the first four days.
they put up their prices two days into our holiday food was plain, dull ,and boring and not good value for money,we ended up eating out most of the week.
everyone was after a tip from the cleaners to the man who opened the door for us.
it is situated at a junction and is very noisy with traffic and car horns beeping incessantly
i will never stay there again and would not recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Luxor.
step out of your door and you get a constant barrage of hassle from taxi drivers caleche drivers and felluca boys it really spiolt our holiday, i love egypt and have been numerous times, but next time i will stay on the west bank as Luxor city is stressful to say the least.
if you want peace stay in a five star hotel were you somewhat sheilded from the hassle
not anything less.
