The two tombs that were open were both accessed by separate short, steep, uneven staircases - watch the headroom as well as some parts are very low indeed. I found that in a couple of areas during each descent it was easier to turn around and go backwards (carefully)! The tombs are best visited in very small groups. Guides are not allowed inside so listen carefuly in order to find out the key things to look out for. The guardian will point out key scenes and expect an additional tip. Photos will cost you 5 egyptian pounds for each one (no panoramic shots allowed).

Once inside each of the small tombs you will discover well preserved, beautifully painted scenes from both family and daily life of the respective occupant as well as the more traditional scenes one comes to expect inside a tomb.

Well worth the cramped conditions to view such fabulous art work.

A moving testimony of the extraordinary talents gathered by the pharaons among the crowds of artisans who built the many temples and graves of Luxor and Thebes.

This was a definite favourite! We climbed 'the mountain' behind Deir El Medina, the highest point in the Theban Hills, and the view was incredible, along with a refreshing breeze. The local policemen are situated half way up 'the mountain' and were so friendly and welcoming, they escorted us and introduced us to their friends. They were really helpful as well and gave us good advice about travelling around etc.

The ruins of where the tomb workers lived was amazing. The true attraction is the tomb of the foreman. It is painted, not carved and is probably the best preserved tomb in all of Egypt. Simply awesome

I was shocked to see so few visitors to Deir el-Medina when I thought it was one of the most interesting and beautiful sights.
We were lucky and experienced a practically newly discovered tomb with its magnificent art work. Even our guide was impressed but said tourists did not often ask to visit as the main attraction was The Valley of the Kings. The homes and tombs of the artisans should not be missed. The everyday life of this ancient civilization is truly fascinating.
