We stayed at the El Fayrouz for two nights in December 2008. Our taxi driver had a little trouble finding the hotel as it is tucked away in a little side street. The hotel itself looks lovely, with a garden out the back where breakfast and restaurant meals are served. We were given a room right at the front of the hotel as it was the only one available when we booked at short notice. The room was clean and the bathroom was quite large compared to some other budget hotels in Egypt. The downside was that we heard a lot of noise from reception and outside on street level. Bizarrely there was a man with a cart of cauliflowers who had somehow got hold of a microphone, who would use it to spruik his wares at all hours.
The internet was slow but cheap and there is only one computer. There are several internet places just a short walk away to make up for this.
We ate at the restaurant one night but were un-impressed with the bland food and the feral cats lurking around the tables. After dinner we walked up the the beautiful roof top terrace and allowed ourselves to be jealous of the people who had booked one of the rooms on the rooftop!
Whilst we were on the opposite side of the Nile to most of the attractions it was a short walk (about 2 min) down to the barge or the private boats. The barge costs 1 pound, and we got a private boat from between 5 and 10 pounds, one-way.
Overall, a nice little hotel but be organised and book one of the rooms on the higher levels.
