“Nice place but could be a little cleaner.”
Reviewed 22 March 2014

We recently stayed at Jannataan Hotel in Shela. It is set a bit back from the waterfront, about a 3 min. walk. The room we stayed in was very spacious and had a nice balcony. The fans and ventilation were very good. The breakfast on the rooftop terrace was excellent and we enjoyed the fresh juices, fruits and omelets. It was really nice to have a pool as the weather was quite hot and humid (we went in March). However, in general, things were not very clean. For example, sheets, towels, and lounge chairs had dirt and stains on them, bathroom was dirty, pool was cleaned once while we were there for four days, etc. This would be a beautiful place and great value for money with a bit more attention to detail.

We stayed at the Jannataan Hotel Shela for five days, after hearing a lot about it, and reading the rave reviews on tripadvisor. We were not disappointed, as it was a wonderful family stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts are excellent. All the rooms are well kept and clean. The balconies and terrace areas are very spacious, with ample divans and chairs for one to relax in. The pool is very nice; it also has two baby pools for the little ones. All in all, a very relaxing and memorable stay. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, and hope to return again some day!

This place is alot cheaper than most of the other places to stay in the area.
The pool was never that busy and we had a few good swims. With the four building it meant that there were lots of places to sit and be on your own. The water was warm and the service we very well done. We would recommend this place to others

I was with Sabina (review below). Jannataan was like a mini paradise for us. Great value - works out less than £15 per person per night, including a beautiful breakfast of gorgeous fresh fruit, fresh juices, eggs (tip, ask for spanish omlette!), toast, jam, tea, chai, coffee, served to you on whicever of the many lovely terraces you choose.
The staff were very sweet and helpful. The pool is a dream, and cleaned daily - I never saw one leaf in it! Bedrooms and bathrooms simple but clean and very nice.
As well as a private terrace for every pair of rooms there are several roof terraces, each with beautiful views in every direction, and plenty of nice furniture to lounge on and read a book or have a nap!
Really can't believe the bad review below, this place has obviously turned itself around!

My friends and I arrived in Shela at night after a pretty horrific 10 hour bus journey from Mombassa and arguements with beachboys to get a boat to the island. When we walked into Jannataan Hotel - where we were getting a double room for 4000 kenyan shillings, I really wasn't expecting to see a beautiful swimming pool in the hotel courtyard surrounded by palm trees and swahili chic furniture and kikoy cushions everywhere. Baye the lovely man in charge showed us to our beautiful rooms (four poster wooden beds with dressing tables, balconies etc), he brought us fresh juice and beach towels to go swimming in the pool. Every morning we had a great breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs, toast and chai masala or coffee on one of the several roof terraces overlooking Shela. It was so clean and beautiful and had the biggest pool of all the hotels I saw on Lamu (even bigger than the expensive hotels like Peponi, Kigani and Lamu House)

It really was lovely hotel, and such great value - I would most definitely recommend to others. The description given by the reviewer below sounds like a different hotel entirely so don't worry!
