If lamu is one of Kenya's crown pearls, then The Lamu House is defenitely the jewel on that crown! Even those who belong to the real globetrotters like myself, spoiled by more dan the average accomodation, will come to the conclusion that The Lamu House is one of those places that inspire. Its location, its architecture, its food and its atmosphere,... it has it all. That the owners have chosen this place, in the middle of the hart of this vibrating old town, a little bit away from the beachy hotels, might seem a disadvantage. But it is not at all a disadvantage, on the contrary. It makes you feel to be really a guest of this old old city and its nice inhabitants. Here you are in the center of activity, the distance between the hotel and the real daily life at Lamu is nothing more than just the doorstep. And from here to the beach life is matter of minutes. I have just returned from The Lamu House but will certainly return!

We just returned from 7 days relaxation in this true paradise. We already stayed at Lamu House last year. Normally I never go back twice to the same country, as I still want to discover many other destinations. However Lamu is so authentic and this hotel the perfection, so we made an exception and we did not regret it!
The wonderful Beach House Club is an absolute must: I loved the fresh fish on the grill and the fact that you have a beautiful sand beach just for yourself.
I really don't understand why one would feel unsafe here. Travelling to for instance Rio, NY, Paris is much more dangerous. At night you can easily walk in the streets of Lamu.
I suggest you go now, before more people find this treasure.
Big hugh to Frank and Marianne, the perfect hosts.

After 17 magnificent days touring through Tanzania & Kenya we needed to relax. Lamu House was absolutely perfect. The rooms were fantastic and lots of thought was put into making our stay perfect. Arriving with a bag full of dirty clothes it was luxury to wear the complementary local wrap that was waiting on our beds. Hosts Frank & Marianne were amazingly helpful as were all the staff. The restaurant was superb & each night groups not staying at Lamu House were patrons as it was locally recognised as excellent. The dhow trip to the Beach Club for a gourmet lunch on the beach was spectacular and the snorkelling off a nearby island exhilarating. An incredible 4 days.

Room Tip: Our balcony opened onto the water so we were able to witness daily life easily. Recommend room at f...

We stayed at Lamu House for a week in January 2012. It is the most charming getaway from the stress of the Western world.
Lamu House is a beautiful boutique hotel with a very relaxed atmosphere. The owners Frank and Marianne are the most fantastic hosts. They will arrange anything you desire. A boat trip, waterskiing, sailing, deep-see fishing, excursions by small plane to the most wonderful locations etc.
The food is simply delicious. The beach is amazing. It's a 5 minute boat trip away from the hotel but it brings you to a completely different world (Club 55 in St Tropez but 60 years back).
We enjoyed a holiday like never before. And furthermore we never felt unsafe, not for a second.
If you like the all-in hotels of Turkey, Egypt, Spain or wherever...don't go.
If you want to experience the spirit of Africa in wonderful surrounding...go!
We thank Frank and Marianne for their hospitality and we will most certainly go back.

We visited Lamu House Hotel recomended by some friends; we never went to Africa before and we had some doubts traveling based on the recent events in Lamu but in general on the African continent.

Arriving in Lamu, being picked up from the airport till the moment we where dropped of at the airport has been an unbelievable experience.

We trully enjoyed the beauty of the hotel, the simplicity, the kindness and care from all the staff and the owners Frank and Mariane!

Lamu is definately the place to go for the beauty of nature, the endless posibilities of life on the water with sailing, fishing, enjoying the seenery and landing in one of the great places on the beaches for a great lunch or dinner and relaxation!

We definately would recomment people to go now and enjoy Lamu's beauty before to many people find out about it!

Lamu house is a great place, you will not be disapointed!

Visit the webside, ask for a recomendation of the different rooms available (all rooms are different and all beautifull in itself)

Enjoy Lamu, we can't wait to go back there!

After a breath-taking, life changing safari on the Masai Mara, we didn't know if we could be impressed again. And we touched down on the "airstrip" (really just a bit of dirt) in Lamu, things didn't look so great. The travel agent had messed up our reservations and the hotel was not there to meet us. We were a bit intimidated (2 small, white girls) but picked up our bags and hoped on the boat with the locals. Everyone was friendly and helpful and we paid a man $10 to carry our bags to Lamu House.

Now Lamu will look run down, 3rd world and a bit tired but do not let that dampen your spirits. It is worth the long trip! Once inside Lamu House, we were in paradise. The pictures don't even do it justice. The open spaces around the wonderful, relaxing pool are serene and beautiful. Old fashion gold keys unlock big wooden doors to the guest rooms. Our room was small but lovely. We had the fans and mosquito netting and were fine in the warm air at night.

The food was wonderful. And the service was consistent and top-notch.

Lamu House is not on a beach but we took speed boats (the Beyonce's captain was our favorite!) to the other side of Lamu to experience world class beaches and other restaurants. Swimming in the Indian Ocean is an experience not to be missed. Lamu is not to be missed.

I can't wait to return to Lamu House!

Lamu has an ambience, air and feeling unlike anything else I experienced in Kenya. It's both multicultural and uniquely African. The town itself is safe, easy to navigate on foot, and a constant cultural delight. Lamu House is ideally situated on the waterfront, in a restored historical structure evidencing Indian, African, Arab, and Portugese influences. Frank and Marianne are delightful and helpful, and the staff is eager to help. Restaurant is excellent; the banana and chicken curry is hot and wonderful. Despite the recent security concerns about the northern Kenya coast, this is a place to see and savor.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the waterfront offer a wonderful view of people, as well as the elegant dhows...
