Lamu is a truly magical place to stay . Strange combination - to stay in a town with only one car and vast numbers of donkeys used as the only form of transport, combined with Lamu House Hotel the most wonderful place I have ever stayed. The rooms were stunning - more like a private suite within an apartment - with wonderful sea views, a peaceful shaded balcony, an outdoor sitting area, two comfortable chairs thoughtfully placed to enjoy G&Ts as the sun went down. Staff were friendly, relaxed and hospitable, creating a welcoming atmosphere - with refreshing cocktails on arrival, the most delicious freshly squeezed passion fruit juice for breakfast . Marianne and Frank, the Belgian owners have created a stunning hotel and make you feel like personal house guests. The place is personable and stylish - with artefacts, pictures, old pots, antique clocks, fabrics and furnishings all chosen with care- but not in any stuffy way. Swimming pool small but refreshing. Although booked in for B and B we chose to eat each might in the attached restaurant as the fish dishes were so good. The restaurant overlooks the sea, and is another magical experience when lit at night by Indian style lanterns, strung around the enormous tree which also provides welcome shade at breakfast
For travellers wary of going to Kenya following the terrorist attacks, I can only say that we are Not ones to take risks - we looked carefully at the advice given by the UK FCO following the very recent bomb attack by terrorists, near to Mombassa, which had resulted in UK holiday makers being evacuated at short notice. the FCO advice clearly warned tourists from going close to the Somali border,North of Pate island. We also established that there had never been an attack on a westerner in Lamu town. From the moment we stepped off the plane at Manda Island, we experienced nothing but a very warm welcome from local people, who seemed pleased to see us. Jambo was a constant refrain from passers by as we walked around. Wonderful trip with Kelly and his son in the family Dow, out to the mangrove forests, to see the ancient ruins of a Swahili village, delightful lunch cooked for us and Swahili songs to entertain us on the way back. A truly memorable experience.

After touring the Kenyan countryside, we concluded our trip on Lamu, staying in the Lamu House Hotel. The Lamu House is situated right on the water front in Lamu town. The hotel consists of a couple of joint Swahili style houses, a nice restaurant and lovely lounge area around a small pool. The room we stayed at, had entrance area with cabinet space and mini bar, a bedroom with a typical Swahili style bed, a spacious balcony with comfortable sofa, and finally a large bathroom. Very nice all together!!! The hotel also offers a beach club across the water on Manda island and transportation by boat. When in Lamu, make sure to do one of the Dow trips offered. They can be arranged through the hotel as well, but we arranged a perfectly nice trip with one of the local tour guides (Nassir M. Omar, +254722726233).

I stayed at Lamu House for a week during a professional training in Lamu. I was made to feel very much at home amid the beautiful surroundings of this well-appointed boutique hotel. Frank and his staff are as lovely as the accommodations. Food was delicious over the entire week. Would love to return with my family for vacation someday very soon!

Room Tip: I had one of the rooms at the front of the hotel with a sea view. Stunning view and not at all noisy as others have said. Also a nice perch to watch Lamu life pass you by down below.

Stylish and comfortable facility with international standards in the kitchen. Reception could be more pro-active on transfers. My companion found the street below noisy - with all the dhows and sailors doing their thing most of the night. I was fine with ear plugs.

Room Tip: You may want a room looking away from the sea (and noisy sailors and folk on the street)
