I was part of a group. When I heard that they could accommodate people w/ limited mobility, I took my Mom along. She had her 88th birthday in Kenya! The location at the edge of the game park was amazing. It was like living in the midst of the animals. We were in the economy / mid-grade section and it was very nice. The food was very good. No one lost weight on this trip. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We wanted to take a hot air balloon ride and they made all the arrangements and had coffee and pastries for us before we left. The "safari" trips into the park were great but we found out that is was a mini safari when we went anywhere. This was a trip of a lifetime - but I'm coming back for more.

Room Tip: Let Grace or Andrew know about any special needs. For mid-range or high-end, there are no bad rooms!

Mara West was the first of many safari lodges we stayed at during this our first trip to Africa (Kenya and S. Africa) It set the standard for all others. I would recomend the Mara and if you come here, stay at Mara West. It's location is unmatched by any other lodge we saw in the area. It overlooks the Mara from the edge of the escarpment, facing east with unbelievable sunrises. We stayed in one of the "high end" lodges directly above the Mara's Oloololo gate.

Despite the intense desire to sleep in , you can't! The sun rises, the view is unmatched, you have to leap up and sit on the porch with your coffee and binoculars and start your safari by checking out the animals in front and below you! All this when the lodging, the beds, the bedding, the bathrooms, the showers the room all were so perfect your comfort needs screamed for you to stay inside a little longer.

The staff, the service, the food not to mention the actual safaris and your masai guide/driver were all tops. While here, we looked at the other levels of housing Mara West has availbale and could certainly have stayed there as well.

Mara West, because of the elevation of it's location has perfect climate. Certainly one benefit was to be able to come back up off the heat of the mara plains (where the other lodges are located) and enjoy a cool evening. Made for great sleeping. As mentioned, we stayed in numerous other lodges over the two weeks after the stayed at Mara West and while they were all very good and certainly unique and different because of their particular park, and other factors, Mara West had them beat. Next time we respond to the call of Africa, this is one place we won't miss.

I went with my parents and two friends for a 10 day safari for my birthday and ended the trip in Kensington Mara West. We were so thankful we ended our trip here because nothing else could have matched. The service was amazing with personable staff that wanted nothing but to make our experience the best. The food was prepared with vegetables grown on site and a kitchen staff that truly was proud of what they we offering. Rose brought fresh coffee and cookies to our balcony each morning before sunrise so we could slip onto the balcony and watch the sunrise over the reserve in our bath robes.
Giraffe, Zebras and monkeys roamed the grounds adding to the unbeatable experience like nothing we could ever have expected.
I want nothing more than to go back to Kenya and stay at Kensington Mara West again.

My sister and I traveled to Keny for a medical mission trip with a group of 23. We stayed at Mara West and worked with Africa Mission Services delivering medical care. Our accommodations at the camp were amazing, clean, very comfortable, great amenities and spectacular views. We stayed in the high end lodging which was superb and well worth the money. The food was excellent and the staff was so warm and friendly...we always felt welcome and well taken care of. We had two days of safari and the guides were great...very knowledgable and always wanting to make sure we had the best experience we could have. We were always treated like family by everyone at the camp and the experiences we had and memories made will last a lifetime.

Room Tip: Recommend the mid or high end lodging

I have traveled to Kenya on medical mission trips as well as for pleasure a number of times over the past 10 years. I have been lucky enough to stay at Mara West 4 times now. Each time the camp gets more amazing. The "high end" and "mid range" accommodations are fantastic! Both are equal (in my view) in terms of comfort and service. In addition, the "high end" cottages have views of the Maasi Mara that cannot be described and additional elegant touches that are perfect for the location and surroundings. Nothing compares to looking at the stars or the sunrise and hearing absolute silence, except nature. No engines, no planes, no horns. Perfect...

The camp has two functions. Mission groups, medical and otherwise, use the camp as a home base. Andy, the owner, and Francis coordinate these trips with groups from all over. I have met so many interesting people while crossing paths here. Most of the groups stay in the "economy" tents in the camp. Even thought these tents are very affordable, the are clean, comfortable, with beds that are made daily and electricity. And where else can you wake up with Zebra and Impala eating grass a few feet outside your window.

The "mid range" and "high end" accommodations are appropriate for those who like more amenities and an ensuite bathroom. They cost a little more but are a great value compared to other safari camps. People staying in these areas are a combination of those on safari and those on missions who want little extra comfort.

The meals are consistently delicious. A menu that varies each day. Fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious meats, great vegetarian fare, homemade desserts, even an after dinner cocktail if you like.

Animals wander through camp. You might see Giraffe, Baboons, Zebra, Waterbuck, Warthogs and a variety of birds, all before you leave your porch in the morning! There are local Maasi watchmen day and night to keep everyone safe. This is truly an authentic experience, not a cookie cutter hotel....

There is a small gift shop and a business center of sorts. Grace is in the office and she is was able to make or change any arrangements we needed. There is great cell service - you can use a global phone or buy a local SIM card if your phone is unlocked. Rates to the US are incredibly low (about 3 cents/min for voice) and Internet access is consistent via smart phone and equally cheap. There is no WiFi access in camp yet but Andy is looking into it. There is 220/240V electricity for a number of hours each day. Power is from generators an so is not available 24 hours a day. Plugs are large 3 prong African style so bring adaptors and a transformer if you want to use a 110V blowdryer. The water is pumped, treated and safe. Bottle water is also available.

If you are going to the Maasi Mara, check out Mara West. You won't be disappointed!!
