“Great Safari”
Reviewed 15 August 2010

Our first impressions of the camp were not to good, the camp is in the middle of constructing extra tented rooms and in need of some landscaping and tidying up with better reliability for the generator and solar power. The tents are ok but the bathrooms are very tired and the result of very poor workmanship. There is a swimming pool recently opened but the area around the pool is untidy and not completely finished yet. That is all the bad points now for the good ones we stayed for 3 days 2 nights and experienced no stomach problems the evening meals were ok but the breakfasts were fantastic. The tents were spotlessly clean including the towels and sheets. The restaurant was very clean and so were the toilets. The staff at the camp were great and our chief guide Henry Kishuru was fantastic as was his assistant Wilson. Henry is very experienced for his years and a very likable young man and we had many special sighting of the animals on the Mara. All in all it was a great experience but there is room for improvement with a view to the accomodation.

When we first arrived at Kichakani Camp, we thought we were to sleep in the jungle because of its close proximity to Masai Mara Game Reserve only to be visited by a lovely well planned out tented camp. The rooms were huge and warm a fact in the windy night of Masai Mara. Mara is a cold vast land at night so you have to dress warm and of cause take a hot shower. The food was straight from the garden and fresh.

Since December is not a Wildebeest Migration period, don't expect to see millions of animals running across the nearby Talek river as we see on most National Geographic documentaries; nevertheless, you will see the Lions, African Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Cheetahs, hundreds of Wildebeests, Antelops, Gazelles, etc and if you are lucky, you might catch LIVE a hunt by the Lionesses. This is a spectacular feat which i must say is the most exciting experience of them all in the Wild! Go for it and enjoy the Masai Mara.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Innovatively conceived spectacularly on the edge of the expansive Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kichakani Camp a simple but classic camp nestled amidst the big figs of the Mara. It offers a panorama of the Burrungat and Posee plains on its sides. The camp is conveniently located on the banks of the Talek River, just next to a major wildebeest crossing point. With the river as the only physical boundary between the park and the camp, it offers excellent game viewing. The camp décor and architecture is intentionally simplistic in nature, with semi-permanent grass thatched bandas fitted with tents – flash toilets and hot shower bathrooms en-suite – and a deck for outdoor sitting. The food is a fusion of African and International cuisines prepared and presented in a unique African style. Kichakani Camp does not miss to capture the romance of safari life. ... more   less
