Truly Magical

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Aug 2019via mobile
Stayed for 3 nights. Located right in the center of the action, as soon as you drive out of the gate you find animals. The luxury tents are clean, comfortable and very nicely decorated. Ours sat on the river which was a nice plus. The shower was something to look forward to in the morning, and after a long day out on Safari. Food was excellent. To save the best until last, the staff, they were all fantastic. Everyone was so kind, helpful, and friendly which made for a great atmosphere. Especially want to thank Alfred and Nicholas they went the extra mile each day we were there to ensure we were happy.

Was here with family and wish the rooms were better. Could do with a makeover and better lighting. Definitely needs an intercom to the reception and not walk up in the night if you need something.
Staff are all very pleasant and responsive. Food is good for vegetarians.

This was the best holiday of my life. We traveled to Nairobi from the uk. We had the choice of driving or flying to the camp, we chose to fly, thank goodness as outside of the city there are no roads. We landed in the middle of the grasslands and had an hour and a half Jeep trip. Sounds tiring but the views of the animals was magnificent. Nothing quite beats turning through the trees to see a 40 strong, herd of giraffes. We arrived at the camp, showered then went for food. This was always beautifully presented and very tasty. The jeep safaris were awesome, we managed to see the big five, the hot air ballon trip was awesome, the views are breathtaking, the silence is great.
All the staff are very friendly and helpful. If you are looking at going 3 nights wasn’t long enough for us.
We then traveled to Mombasa which was another great experience. By the ocean, and very hot.

This camp is located right in the middle of Masai Mara Park, right along the Mara River, which makes it a unique experience since you see the hippos roaming around while enjoying a drink.

The location and facilities are good, the tents really spacious and comfortable and the staff is generally attentive and kind.

Unfortunately, once again with Ashnil, the management seems not to care about their customers which is widely noticed in the quality of the food offered.... really really poor. We've been to 2 Ashnil camps during our trip and the situation has been exactly the same: great place with great potential but managed in way to increase their benefits rather than customer's satisfaction and happiness. Just to give an example, the lunch box we requested one day for the full day safari had 1 boiled egg, some pasta with canned sauce, chips and a yoghurt, no more than 5 $ worth when you are paying hundreds of dollars... The situation doesn't get better when you have your meals in the dinning room.

I would definitely recommend to try some of the other options in the same quality range that you can find in the park.

To be honest, this was probably the best place we stayed at in Kenya. Particularly excellent food, very nice luxury tents, and a great lounge/bar looking out over a river to relax in.

Pros:
Food was the standout for us. It was a buffet, but wow, so much effort had been put into each dish on offer, and chefs available to cook pasta, eggs, omelettes, etc. Weirdly I began to look forward more to this than the actual safari? I really wish I had a pasta station with a chef at home. Sigh.
The tents were also amazing. They are huge, with a big four-poster bed set in the middle of the room, and a large bathroom directly behind. Is this even really a tent? I mean, technically, yes, but practically more like a mini African mansion? Just like the food, I began to resent having to leave the tent to go on safari. Can I live at Ashnil Mara please?
One other point, they have a nice-ish gift store, which is great if you want a generic Kenyan souvenir but don't want to be harassed or haggle with sellers.

Cons:
Ok, so SOME of the staff were nice but others had some real attitude. Not anything particularly bad, just grumpy or ignorant. There were also a group of porters/helpers who would stand around in the entrance area and stare as people walked in and out.. which was a bit uncomfortable for my wife and I. Not cool.

Went there just for lunch, as we were staying at another lodge. Beautiful dining area. Great spread for lunch.
Many types of salads, soup and dessert buffet.
One indian section, with fresh fried bread and curry everyday. I looked forward to that all 3 days we ate there!
And fresh tossed pasta was awesome as you could customize any way you want
Hot coffee/tea to end the meal!
The resort has a nice gift shop.
And the lookout to watch hippos and crocs is a plus!
