“Unique wildlife experience for both novices and pros”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2013

I am not usually inclined to use empathic words to describe things, however our stay at Naboisho camp (and Rekero) was a unique, fascinating, life-enriching experience that we will never forget.

Staff at the camp is welcoming in the genuine sense of the word, which allows you to feel at home from the time you first step out of the little plane that will probably get you there.

The abundance of wilderbeests, zebras, and gazelles creates a great environment for seeing most cats in action (cheetas, leopards, lions) and herds of elephants.

The tents are very smart and provide you with a comfortable experience while at the same time keeping the environmental footprint low, so that animals feel free to roam the camp at night.

The cost of our safari was not low, however this kind of experience made us feel as if, for once, we were travellers and not tourists.

My husband and I just got back from Naboisho Camp in the Naboisho Conservancy in Maasai Mara, Kenya. It was an amazing experience and overall beautiful place. When we first arrived we were given Dowha, which was incredibly refreshing and proved to be a great start to our vacation. We were then shown to our tent, Number 8, which was private and gave us an intimate setting to better enhance our honeymoon experience. We were then taken on a private game drive in which we saw a lioness and her cubs hanging out while the sunset in the distance. To say it was picturesque is an understatement, and that was just night one. Every night dinners were served with the whole camp, being that the camp is small (roughly 20 people total) it gave us a chance to connect with people from all over the globe and exchange safari stories, and life stories in general. We met some interesting people that we have continued to stay in touch with. Our guide, Rodger, was truly talented. He knew exactly where to take us to see the best game. He also was incredibly knowledge about the Maasai Mara and taught us many things that we will never forget. The manager, Roelof and his wife Helen were accommodating and delightful. We took a walking tour with Roelof and had a great experience. He is the best walking guide in Africa; he understands the animals and land without hesitation answering every question you could possibly come up with. On our last night in Naboisho Camp, Helen and Roelof surprised us with a romantic dinner with just myself and my husband. We were truly touched, I even cried while she escorted us to a private room with candles and a fireplace. They really understood what we needed and proved to be gracious hosts throughout the entire 4 day- 3 night adventure. I have already recommended this place to two friends who are planning their honeymoon, I would recommend this place to a stranger as well. I hope this review helps someone have a honeymoon as memorable as ours was.

Room Tip: You are on a safari, just remember that.

We had a fantastic time at the camp. We were treated to great game drives with excellent guides, excellent food and service. we could not have been happier with this camp and the way Helen & Roelof managed it to such a high standard.

Having done 3 safaris in South Africa, this was our first experience of a tented camp in East Africa. And what an experience! With 8 luxury tents, well spread out with views across the plain and service that could not be faulted, this was a fantastic experience. The hosts, Helen and Roelof set a very high standard and nothing was left to chance, or was too much trouble. The walking safari showed Roelof to be a mine of information on bush fauna and flora and Benjamin, our personal guide, made sure we got close to all the game, including the famed 'crossing', which was a real spectacle. Being in a Conservancy adjoining the Mara, there were far fewer vehicles and, it seemed, far more game, so the formula worked really well and should be encouraged as a solution to the preservation challenge. The enjoyment of the week was enhanced by a great mix of International guests with whom to exchange our daily experiences whilst enjoying the excellent catering. Difficult to imagine how it could get better than this!

We loved every minute of our stay here.
Roelof and Helen are a formidable double act - Roelof is, without question, one of the best walking guides in Africa and Helen is the most gracious and hospitable hosts imaginable. The camp is just perfect.
The area is full of game and with the Loita Migration in town the plains in and around camp were filled with wildebeest and zebra being stalked by the resident 21 strong lion pride or harassed by cheetah.Large herds of elephant could be seen from the camp everyday.
This is like the Kenyan game viewing of 20 years ago - "nameless" cats and more often than not you are the only vehicle at incredible sightings.
If this Conservancy and camp are the model for the future preservation of Afica's precious wildlife then the future is very bright indeed.
A huge thankyou to R and H, Wilson and Rakita and the whole Naboisho team - not forgetting our special travel companions the T's from Dulwich.

Naboisho has got everything you would want in a camp in Africa. Great location, beautiful spacious tents with outstanding views and the staff are friendly and attentive. The conservancy is teeming with game which can be spotted from the balcony of your tent as well as the main mess.
Helen and Roelof are perfect hosts and are always on hand to make sure everything is taken care of. Nothing is too much trouble for them. A perfect camp to escape the crowds in the Mara and still experience fantastic sightings. We came across three male lions on a zebra kill one early morning and we were the only vehicle there. We spent 3 hours with them on our own!
Can't wait to go back.

My wife and I spent two nights at Naboisho Camp with our 13 year old daughter and 16 year old son. We loved it. The camp is only two years old and so is not as well known - yet. That it is in the Naboisho Conservancy not in the Maasai Mara NP seems to actually be an advantage. The game viewing was better than what we saw in the Mara, with far fewer vehicles. The total number of visitors and vehicles is restricted in the Conservancy. The only thing missing is the wildebeest crossing, which we caught in the Mara and Serengeti so that was fine.

We stayed at four Asilia properties on our trip: Olivers, Sayari, Rekero and Naboisho. Naboisho is not listed as a luxury camp with Asilia. If they add solar hot water and internet it will be in that category. The bucket showers were no problem, we had plenty of hot water. The food at Naboisho was the best we had in Africa. Helen and Roelof were outstanding hosts, we felt at home with them and the entire staff, including Rodger who was visiting, and the staff is made up of genuine Massai people, which added to the experience. The common area is beautiful, and they set up some meals for us outdoors on the lawn, which was wonderful. The service was outstanding. We enjoyed the communal dining and the other guests as well.

There are only 8 tents so it is a small camp with a small number of guests. The tents were very nice. You can see the other tents, but they were spread out. The tents are single walled, with a canvas floor, so not quite as "luxurious" as Olivers or Sayari but that didn't make a difference to us. In August it was cool overnight not but not bad. The tents were spotless. There is no internet service, but Helen does have a terrific gift shop/tent.

The game drives were also outstanding. Perhaps the highlight of our entire trip was a visit to a real, untouristy Maasai village with Rodger and Christine, which was the reason Troy at True Africa recommended Naboisho to us in the first place. It was a great experience for all of us. The bush walk with Roelof and Rodger was another highlight.

Asilia uses hosts at each camp, and we found the warmer hosts and staff the better experiences we had. Helen and Roelof will eventually move on, which will potentially be a loss for Naboisho depending on their replacements. They were wonderful.

Before you go on your first safari it is hard to know what the camps will be like. Sayari is Asilia's luxury camp, with double walled tents, wood floors, glass windows, tubs, solar hot water, and a pool. If you need those things, Naboisho might not be perfect for you, but Sayari did not have the charm of Naboisho, and while we highly recommend Sayari too, we had a better experience at Naboisho. To sum up, all four of us loved Naboisho and highly recommend it.
