“Amazing”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

I could write a long review detailing why the trip was so memorable but there is only one word needed AMAZING!!! From the staff to the food to the game drives the whole experience was beyond my expectations.

Many of the other guests had taken numerous safari's and told me this was among the best experience they've ever had. Great vacation and one that I will always hold close to my heart.

The guides know their animals and birds, are polite, friendly and great drivers. We saw more game than any other game park I've been to. The managers were quiet, stayed out of the way when not needed and available and flexible when needed -- a rare talent. The food was surprisingly good for being in such a remote place. Flying in on a Twin Otter prop plane to a dirt air strip was just the perfect start. The rooms were clean, the water warm,

What did I want to experience on my first trip to Kenya? I wanted to see the lions in their natural environment and I wanted to hear the "Lion King" roar. I experienced both at Encounter Mara. I will never forget hearing the lions roar in the night, while knowing that I was safe and secure in my tent. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Dickson was a wealth of information regarding the animals and their environment. We saw so many animals and only met one other couple outside of our group of 12. The camp was clean and well maintained with much respect for nature. The food, the drink and all of the amenities exceeded my expectations. When I return to Kenya, I will definitely spend time at Encounter Mara. It is truly more than just a travel experience.

We stumbled on this place from a tips from our friends, and the more we looked into it the more excited we got and eventually decided to book a 4 night safari with them !

The first impressions were good, from the moment our guide Dickson was meeting us at the airstrip and we started our first game drive right from right there !

The lodging was very interesting, and as far as the tented camps go, this was one of the best ones we have seen, with real tents of good quality.

Food at this place was also excellent and the service very flexible for example for catering for children.

The guides and the vehicles for the game drives were the best we have seen on our safaris in Kenya.

In general the attention and service from the staff was very good and caring, all our requests were handled very professionally.

I am sitting writing this in the midst of a blinding snowstorm and fondly remembering my time at Encounter Mara a brief 2 weeks ago. I will be telling stories for a long time about this magical place. First of all they are trying to do a good thing--take care of the land, the Masai and the animals by leaving as little footprint as possible. It is a conservancy and the animals and the people come first--not money. While pricey-- it is worth it. The camp is relatively small, only 12 tents, which allows them to deliver personalized attention. They are relatively new and open to suggestions and improvement, while not much is needed. The schedule is as follows, Wakeup with delivered tea/coffee to your tent at 6AM, quick bite then on a drive by 6:30AM for the best animal viewing. Back to camp at 11 for delicious brunch. Free time from noon to 3:30 to nap, read, chat or sit in animal blind on property. Tea at 3:30 then drive again until 7:30 with a stop at sundown with wine and snacks. Gorgeous. Back for a quick bucket shower (don't worry, it really works) and then an elegant dinner al fresco under the stars with a campfire. You are escorted at all times in the dark to your tent and zipped in--lots of animals around so no roaming. Our Masai guide, Dixon Junior, was nothing short of charming, and knowledgeable beyond belief. He had "bush eyes" and could spot animals we could not even see with binoculars. Loved him. Truly made the 3 days a memorable experience. Chris and Sam, managers, make sure your every need is met and have done a great job developing this slice of safari heaven. Look no further--Encounter Mara.

My wife and I just returned from a 3 day safari where we went with my brother and his family who has lived in Kenya for the past 11 years. The encounter staff arranged everything from transfers to/from Nairobi to the food we ate at sundown each day on the mara. The safari exceeded our expectations in every way. We felt safe and pampered and was in the middle of the wild bush (with lions, cheetahs and elephants), all at the same time. Highly recommended. Our guide (Andrew) made the trip extremely memorable with his vast knowledge of the whole eco system in the Mara, good humour and expert driving in a very tricky environment.

As other reviewers have stated - this place can't be more perfect! The animals are amazing, but the down times, when not on game drives, were so relaxing and peaceful: the palce is just amazing. Chris, Sam and the whole staff pay attention to every detail, and the customer service that is provided is so good that you really notice it, because it is so uncommon in most other places.

I especially want to remark on how great our guide Dickson Kaleku is. He was really more than a guide - his knowledge of wildlife and natural science was very impressive, he was as interested in making the experience fun and exciting for us as we were, and he went out of his way hunting down the leopard so that we could see it before we left the camp. He was great, Encounter Mara was great, and I hope to be able to return some day!
