Rhino Tourist Camp
Reviewed 17 September 2012

I booked to stay on the weekend of 24-26 August only to find they'd overbooked and didn't even have the courtesy of telling us. We found that out when our tour driver drove us to a neighbouring camp and told us to diembark!
It would have been for the Rhino staff to meet us and apologise for the error then offer us that option.
On the second day we finally got to stay at Rhino but that was because our tour leader made a big fuss.
Other than that, I loved the tents and the camp experience-that was worth waiting for.
The food is a bit flat though generous.
Out of it all, I just wish the staff were a bit customer friendly and communicative with their guests.
I found that quite unforgiveable and am afraid I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

We sincerely apologize for the failure to communicate the accommodation situation at the campsite beforehand and, more so, that a member of our team did not personally approach you to communicate this to you.

I assure you that we take customer service very seriously and I have shared your sentiments with the staff so that this should never happen again. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and sincerely appreciate your feedback.

Though still underconstruction, this camp is definitely not the best in terms of accommodation. The tents were good in terms of quality but the bathrooms left a bad impression on me.
Staff were warm and friendly.
hopefully it will improve soon

I was on a safari I booked as a single this was not supposed to y me accommodation (dodgy company Absolute Adventure Africa). I was asked to share a tent with two strangers. I declined and as such didn't get to sleep in a tent - got a concrete room instead. The shower is all mouldy, rusty green and brown, just like Alcatraz. A dodgy lock as the rooms have keys unlike the tents.I got locked in! Hard rubber pillows. Warm blankets if you use two sets. Electricity 5-7am and 7-10pm. Rough road to get in - 2.5 hours of non-stop potholes. Food quite tasty but dirty chef - i saw him blow his nose into his hands then go back to cooking! Tusker 200 schillings.

Room Tip: rooms are warmer than tents

I stayed here after booking a 3 day Mara tour with Kenya Budget Safaris for 360 US dollars, the cheapest price I could find on the net (they were pretty good by the way and none of the other travellers I spoke to had paid less than that with other tour companies). The campsite is pretty good for a budget place, and is a 5-10 minute drive to the nearest gate into the Mara. Its own website (www.rhinotouristcamp.com) shows it charges tour companies 35 US dollars a night per person in low season. It had clean rooms and individual bathrooms, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, and you get two options, either to stay in the tented rooms on one side or the walled rooms on the other. The food is reasonable (eggs and sausage for breakfast, beef curry and rice, noodles, cabbage etc for dinner). What really made this place was the friendly and welcoming staff, and the other travellers. After dinner most people (tourists, Kenyans and maybe a Maasai or two), would sit around the campfire swapping stories of the animals they'd seen that day and the many other adventures they'd had so far in Africa, usually over a Tusker or 2! Lights out at 10pm, but the fire continued after midnight. Over the 2 nights we spent there, this place certainly had a great atmosphere!

This camp present itself as a tented camp, although most of the establishment consists of stone buildings and not tents. The rooms have clean beds, mosquito nets, flush toilets and hot water. There are also electricity between 6pm and 10pm, in addition to early in the morning. The food provided is totally ok, and it is possible to get a could beer if you tell in advance (yes, this must be planned). This is not a place to spend a lot of time except the hours you sleep - but hey, you're at the doorstep of the great Maasai Mara! Spend your time inside the park instead. The people who works there are really friendly, and all in all this place is good value for money for this price range.
