“Best of the Budget Camps”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

If you are seeking a safari from a budget camp then this is one of the best. Unfortunately, too many people compare this camp to one that costs two to three times more a night. You must keep this in mind when you read reviews. Mara Sidai is quite clear that this is a budget camp, therefore, it ranks high to other budget camps. The last time I asked, the animals didn't care where you spent the night!

Initially we were quite sceptic of this place, as it was ranked at #92 of 97 camp in Tripadvisor at Masai Mara area. Having been on hiking expeditions and camping in reserved forests etc, I would not have so much of problem but I'm quite worried about my children's wellbeing as this is their first experience in such nature and surroundings. After enduring 6 hours journey from Nairobi, including 2 hours transversing the 'African Massage' road, having such a place to rest and unwind is a sight for sore-eyes. Upon arriving the camp at 5 pm, we were greeted by a welcoming drinks and one Ms. Charity who showed us our tents (our group consists of 6 adults and 3 kids, hence we were separated into 3 side by side tents). Each tent have their own en-suite sink, sitting type toilet and hot water shower at the back of the tent, each separated by a canvas wall. Upon settling down, we were informed that our lunch was ready (since 1 pm actually) and we were served with vegetarian meals (as we are all Muslim in our group) which is just nice. Then we went for our game drive, return to camp and have our dinner at 8 pm. Electricity supply was only available 2 times a day (5.30 am to 7 am and 6.30 pm to 10 pm), an environmental safe system I would think. However, this is quite a problem as after 10 pm, it is pitch dark and my 3 children woke-up every hour throughout the night as it was very dark to their liking. I have to switch on my torchlight until they go back to sleep. The campsites should have at least a solar-feed surrounding lighting which comes off after 10 pm. They only provide one electricity point in each tent, so it is better if you could bring a multipoint adapter (which I did) if you wanted to charge your camera battery, hand phones etc at one go. Or you may use the multiple adapter at the dining hall.
Apart from the darkness at night, other grouses that I had was regarding the water pressure for the shower. It might be due to heavy usage at the same time throughout the camp, as such I have to woke up really early (before 6 am) in order to have good shower pressure. Other than that, this camp is a good choice if you are on a tight budget.
A simple tips to those who are picky with your meal. Bring your own canned food etc, or else just make do with the meal that they provide. Its nothing fancy, just nice and will fill you up after finishing those adventurous but tiring safari game drive.
Don't forget to bring your own soap or shower gel. I was misinformed by my travel agent and end up with no soap/shower gel for my 2 days at the camp.

Room Tip: If possible, request for tent no. 1. It does not have water pressure problem (as advised by my lucky...

It is simply a back to nature camping as we are looking for a budget safari trip. We sleep in the tent with toilet and shower at the backside tent. the electricity only available 5.30am to 7am and 6.30pm to 10pm to conserve the energy and environment.
Just a simple meals as we asked for vegetarian menu so the cook will advise which one we can eat. it is advisable to bring your own can food for more option.
The tent be guided by local Maasai people at night for security purpose as it was so dark at after 10pm.
It's really a simple accommodation thus don't expect much on the place for the cheapest price you can get on this safari trip. we are really enjoy the whole trip as it really make us feel like on a camping surrounding by nature.

Not what I expected but l guess should.have checked out the place with the tour company before booking. The meals were below average
. The room had no towels we had to request for the same. The bedsheets and towels were not changed for 2 days which we stayed there. Budget should not mean substandard and lack of basic housekeeping

Great place if you're on a tight budget. Personally did not care much for it. Food was blah. Am Kenyan and I can cook better meals. Staff were friendly and always helpful. Tents were too tiny for my taste. Am cloister phobic. Last time at the Mara we stayed at Sarova so this was a big step down. Doubt ill be going back here. I'll do some overtime and stay at the Sarova on my next trip. The camp is outside the Mara and doesn't feel too safe.

Some people seems to forget that this is Africa and complaint about small things(like dinner served a few minutes too late), and this place has really great value compared to the much more expensive lodges in and around Mara. Great hospitality, good food, good beds and every thing you need for such trip in the midle of the bush. And to experience the great Mara, this is all you need.

If you are looking to do safari on a budget this is the perfect place to stay. Tents are basic but roomy enough for two, and each with bathroom facilities and electricity (for a few hours each day). Easy access to Masai Mara morning game drives. Simple, but ticks all of the boxes.
