“Mara Chui refurbished under new management”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2014

I stayed at Mara Chui in December 2013. The lodge has been refurbished and rebranded. It is now called Ole Kagwe Safari Lodge. The rooms have been refurbished and furnished with new beddings and rustic furniture. The rooms are en suite with hot showers and flush toilets. The food was excellent and the new staff is very professional. I was able to charge my phone and my camera as the rooms have electricity at night.
The compound is very neat with beautiful gardens and they were busy with the construction of the swimming pool.
The lodge offered us a full package with airport transfer and transportation in during our 4 nights stay and the guides were very good. It’s a place a will keep going back to.

Room Tip: The wooden cabins at the back are very nice. They are big and they face the bush

We stayed 2 weeks in Mara Chui and although the place is rather basic we had a nice time there.

Food: The food was excellent - the chef and his assistances prepared a variety of soups, meat, pasta, rice, potatos, vegetables and salats during our stay. Desert would be usually fruits. Breakfast is Toast, Pencakes and Omlettes - sometimes also baked beans, tomatos and sausages. If you have your lunch in the camp it would be similar to the things prepared for dinner, if you choose a paked lunch it would be sandwiches, fruits, juice, muffins and either chicken or boild eggs.

Stuff: Friendly people, there is always somebody in the camp to contact and they try to fullfill your needs as best as possible. The manager Sammy is a Maasai and he employed a lot of other Massais as well so even in your daily live you can be in contact with Massais and learn about their culture.

Game drive: The game drive Mara Chui Camp organized for us was exactly what we were asking for - they organized us the car we wanted (not a regular tourist bus) with a good driver.
We were able to choose every day whether we wanted to make morning and evening drives or a full day. The nearest gate is around 10 minutes drive away.

Rooms: The rooms (one can choose in between lodges and tents) are very basic and the furniture is indeed old - but when considering being in a budget camp what you get is reasonable. The bathrooms that are directly attached to either tent or lodge are big and quite good.

What to do: Perfect location for both - game drive and maasai village visits. Although we need to say that a visit of the maasai village is hardly needed as you are surounded by Maasais in this camp already. But the manager Sammy is a Maasai and his village is a 10 minutes walk away from the camp so he can organize you a visit of his own village which is a quit nice way to experiment the reality of how Maasais live.

We stayed at the camp for a couple of nights and, after seeing others, we can say the Masai Chui is not very good. The location is 5-7 minutes drives from the gate which is not bad though I have to comment on the rubbish on the way to get there: people, do not throw carbage, it is your land and should keep it clean!!! The setting of the camp is beautiful as if entering a green lush forest. We were assigned a bungalow, instead of a tent, which looks cute from outside but inside is rather run down and not well kept with a couple of pieces of furniture which looked like third-hand Ikea. Of the two days we spent there, we had no hot water at all on the first and slightly warm on the second. Food is not bad. Electricity is only provided for a few hours a day (not a big deal for us but to take into account). In the middle of the camp, we had practically all the time a group of Masais from the nearby village eating, drinking and chilling which is all fine and cool but not so much when they are right in front of the glass entrance of your bungalow which has see through curtains... no privacy. In general, the place is not so bad if it was cheaper because, compared to what we paid at another camp in Amboseli, the Masai Chui was a real rip off.
