“Best experience ever.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2013

This is the best place to enjoy a real african experience. We slept in a tent, but the tent had all the comfort you can imagine. The staff was very professional and passionate about nature. We could have a very close contact with a masai tribe. The animals were always very close. We got struck by Africa there.

We stayed 3 nights at the Bateleur Camp but wished we had stayed longer. Our tent was quiet and peaceful apart from the sounds of the wild animals and insects. Our Ranger Moses was knowledgeable, friendly and great fun. We enjoyed an early morning Hot Air Balloon over the Mara and it was spectacular, after you have a champagne breakfast on the plains. The food at the Camp was amazing, the best we have had on a four week tour of Africa (in 5 star accommodation) and a great touch that the chefs read out the menu and then later return to see how you enjoyed their food. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, chefs, Ranger or your own personal Butlers. If you have the time visit the Masai Village it was a very interesting experience especially learning about the Water Projects and how the Masai people live. We will definitely return to Africa and Bateleur Camp one day soon!

From the moment we were greeted at the airstrip with a cool, refreshing (and slightly alcoholic!) fruit punch to the moment we were waved off 3 days later, everything about our stay was just magical. All of the staf were friendly, attentive and couldn't do enough for you. Our game driver & guide, Albert, was excellent and we saw so much game on our drives, it was fantastic and stopping to watch the sun set with a cold G&T was wonderful. The food was superb, the 'tented' accommodation was delightful and very comfortable with views looking out over the Mara. They completely surprised us with a romantic dinner for two after pretending that we had to go to the tent to 'inspect damage done by intruding monkeys' only to find a candle lit table (covered in rose petals!) set up on our verander. There were other similar surprises but I won't spoil it for you!! We went on an excellent bush walk and an interesting trip to a local Masai village. We'd highly recommend Bateleur camp for Honeymooners or those looking for a bit more luxury on their safari.

Perhaps everyone has a fantasy where they step from a small plane into the middle of East Africa and are surrounded by eland and giraffe and topi and warthog, with a few buffalo dagga boys glaring balefully at you and a herd of elephant disappearing into the trees. Perhaps that fantasy extends to a Maasai Warrior welcome and blessing and the splash of bubbles as the manager of Bateleur North, Masimbo and his team pour you refreshing drinks alongside the airstrip.

It is no fantasy. From the overwhelming welcome by the andBeyond team to the sumptuous luxury of our tent overlooking endless plains studded with a never ending picture of wildlife, this is the way the Bateleur Team do it. Nothing is too much effort, every holiday desire is catered too (even the roads are not too bad for the African bush :)) and the staff, without exception are amazing.

We stepped into an era bye-gone, gracious, elegant, exciting and magical. Our accommodation was not only beautifully appointed (previous entries have described everything in detail) but the lodge area of Bateleur North was fabulous and the meander past the pool and Bateleur South to
the verdant lawns of neighbouring sister camp, Kichwa Thembo with its breathtaking infinity pool , resident warthogs and sweeping verdant lawns was a delight.

We were lucky enough to enjoy a flight over the Mara in a hot air balloon, and visit the local Maasai Village, dance with the ladies and buy beautiful jewellery, see the school and meet some of the children. We were awed by Maasai warriors dancing and thoroughly enjoyed the most unexpected bush dinner after a day across the Mara with lunch on the Serengetti border.

Joseph Olé Kima was our guide and he was fantastic, we enjoyed extraordinary and numerous sightings including leopard, large hyena clans, serval, cheetah, a few kilometers of wildebeest undecided as to whether to cross the Mara River or not, lion, elephant, numerous antelope, fabulous birds, supersized crocodiles and hippos galore. Oh too many to mention. Even the rainbows and sunsets took on an ethereal quality in this place.

GM Maggie Dempers sets the example and there was nothing about this fabulous six nights that we could fault...a trip we would recommend without reservation, a truly beautiful property run by extraordinary people in the most romantic and awe inspiring setting...what could be better!

Room Tip: if you wish to be close to the main lodge area request ahead, likewise if you wish to be close to th...

After a warm welcome at the private air strip, we had a mini game drive on the way to the lodge. The number of animals was just amazing. We then checkinto a lovely room that looked out on the plain where animals graze. The hospitality was just splendid. Milka was acting manager while the regular manager was off. She is an amazing woman - if only you could clone her. The only disappointment was the food. There was not much variety and what we had was just OK. All the employees were gracious and couldn't do enough for you. Game drives were excellent but the roads leave a little to be desired! We would be more than happy to return.

After a few weeks doing missionary work in Kenya I took a few days to go on safari and stay at the Bateleur Camp. I had no idea what to expect since my parents splurged on this trip for me and did all the planning. Jumping aboard a little hopper plane I chewed my nails until we touched down on a red stretch of earth surrounded by tents and the flat top hills of the Masai Mara. Luxury beyond imagination was waiting to greet me when I climbed down the stairs.

I was greeted by the white-gloved staff with gorgeous smiles and sophisticated personalities (after spending time in the heart of Africa with the locals this really made an impression on me). They served sparkling champagne and mimosas, mouth-watering juices and scrumptious appetizers which I nibbled on as I soaked in the beauty of the plains and the setting sun turning the acacia trees into silhouettes against the tequila sky.

Bateleur Camp has very nice safari vehicles. The best vehicles roaming the park, by far. The seats are comfortable with handrails (which you need on the viciously bumpy roads of Africa) and the large tent-like top cast a cool shade over the passenger seats which were wide open to the wild with no doors or side walls. The drive to the camp was stellar. As soon as we turned into the brush and felt the trees and vines enclose us monkeys were there to greet us, swinging and running through the branches as they screeched out their calls.

Just check out the photos and see for yourself the beauty and fabulous luxury you will find at the camp. Bateleur Camp has a private lobby-like tent that looks like it was set up by hollywood and approved by Hemingway. The luxury tents are incredible with plush comfy beds topped with heavenly down mattress toppers. The tent itself is an amazing structure. A wooden platform forms the group and a wooden arbor protects the fabric on the roof. Two leather arm chairs sit on a porch overlooking the savanna and I spent many lazy, lovely hours watching the water buffalo and elephant herds graze by. The rain shower and slate bathroom feels like it's set up outside but the giant screen windows of the tent are kept private by fences woven from vines.

Meal times were wonderful. I would walk to the main tent and let my server (you are assigned your own butler-server who takes care of you) know I was hungry or thirsty and she would dish out delights in an instant or set up a table to serve me a five course meal. The food was marvelous. 5-star quality for sure. You are also assigned a private driver (I had Eric and loved him to death) and he basically comes to pick you up at any time you wish and take you out to see the Masai Mara. We saw everything! Lions were right below my feet--the big daddy, the pack of lionesses and all there little cubs. Elephants and zebras were always easy to find and a tiny little infant giraffe had just been born. We watched the momma giraffe go to war with some hyenas who wanted to eat her baby for lunch. We spotted leopards and cheetahs stalking their prey and watched one grab a little gazelle and yank it into the brush. Eric even found us a Rhino. I loved the male Topi who were always found in the middle of nowhere standing on little mounds waiting for a female to come and ask them to mate. And despite the fact that the wildebeest usually cross the river in July, they started crossing just before I got there. Oh wow! That was amazing! Those animals are hysterical to watch and they make the funniest sound. We spent hours watching them try to get across that river without being eaten by a crocodile (some 18ft long!). A few wildebeest did not make it but wound up in the croc's mouth. The hot air balloon ride was something I will never forget, especially since I'm afraid of heights. Experiencing the plains of the Mara from a balloon is really something unique you must do!

I went around June 10th through the 20th so the weather was perfect. The nights and mornings were chilly, perfect for sleeping in a tent outdoors. During the day time I would wear pants and a shirt and start out with a hoodie until it was comfortably warm. I travel a lot to Kenya, Rwanda, and the D.R. Congo and it can get pretty hot and dusty so take care to choose your travel time wisely if you are finicky about being hot and sweaty.

Room Tip: If you can splurge for the luxury tent--do it! Worth every penny. I did see the Kitchen Tempo tents...

We had a beautiful right in the bush seeming room. It was luxurious and very tastefully done. The food and service is exquisite. I would recommend this place any day! Its pricey but if you're looking to indulge go for this one, it wont let you down. The safaris were gorgeous, the landscapes were wonderful. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very courteous. Sigh...I want to go back!!

Room Tip: Try to find out how far your room is when making reservations. Some rooms can be quite a walk.
