What a fantastic place to have been lucky enough to discover - The Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge!. We had a family holiday safari this month, having never tried this type of holiday before I can only say it was amazing. Our package included 4 days/nights at Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge, this place is just amazing. After the flight from London we were picked up from Nairobi Airport, private transfer to the local Wilson airport, perfect service for four tired people! On arrival to the Masai Mara landing on a dirt runway we were greeted by the team with a champagne reception & fresh fruit, right next to the runway, a very nice touch. The transport supplied was a fantastic six wheeled drive off road truck, with a separate vehicle for luggage. Patrick the hotel manager was so charming and attentive to all of us throughout the short transfer. On arrival at the wilderness lodge things just got better and better, the rooms were fantastic. They were very clean, large and well thought out. How this can be called a tent I don't know, it's certainly my idea of camping! The staff were so helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic freshly prepared with vegetables from their own organic garden, and good quality meats etc. The Mara Engai is positioned on the top of the plato giving stunning views over the Masai Mara. The view from our decking was unbelievable - room eight! Our safari adventure started almost straight away with John our guide pointing out lions on the first day. As the trip went on we were lucky enough to see the big five including four lioness with nine cubs. John has an excellent knowledge of the area and this combined with the unique vehicles that allowed us to go places other can't ensured that we did not miss anything. As a family this is one of the most memorable holidays in one of the most beautiful places with the kindest happiest people we have ever been lucky enough to spend time with. Without a shadow of a doubt we would highly recommend the Wilderness Lodge, we will most certainly be returning. This resort would be a hard act to follow however, the next five nights we would be staying in Kilifi near Mombassa at the Mara Engai Indian Ocean Resort sister hotel to Wilderness lodge...see our review of this hotel separately. The Boulton Family, Combe Florey, Somerset.

Room Tip: Room eight has the most amazing views you can imagine.

We were lucky enough to have 4 days at the Wilderness Camp and it was simply breathtaking, We were met at the landing strip by Patrick the hotel manager, Julius our safari guide, Vincent the food and beverage manager, champagne and canapes. The transfer to the lodge was in a six wheel drive vehicle which we subsequently found out was by far the best way to do a safari and travel around the surrounding areas. The transfer also included an opportunity to get our first sight of some of the animals we had hoped to see, much to our excitement! On arrival at the lodge we were greeted with a traditional Masai welcome and our first sight of the stunning view over the Mara the Lodge has. We found the room to be extremely luxurious whilst still giving you a sense of sleeping in the wild, with the shower really adding to this. Every evening we were also escorted back to our tent by the Masai's and each night found we'd been left cookies and african tales which was a very nice touch. Over the course of our stay Patrick also took us to different parts of the camp to view both the sunset and sunrise which were in fact even better than views from both the restaurant and room which we initially believed could not be topped. The sunrise also included a champagne breakfast which was well worth the early start for. We were also lucky enough to have a campfire and BBQ one evening with the Masai's who explained different aspects of their culture and showed us some of their traditional dances, despite this being in the bush we were also still treated to the fine dining experience we enjoyed throughout our whole stay. Vincent ,the food and beverage manager, even arranged to have an outdoor bar set up and mixed drinks for us as we dined under the stars. In fact I cant speak highly enough of the standards of the food and drinks throughout our stay.

Despite everything I have mentioned above the point of our stay at the lodge was to go on safari for the first time and this certainly didn’t disappoint! As I said the camps vehicle was definitely the best we saw, it was not only higher than the others, making it easier to spot things but also after a trip in one of the vehicles from Governors camp, a lot more comfortable. We were lucky enough to see everything we had hoped to see which was in no small part to Julius's excellent knowledge. He even arranged a walking safari which included a picnic lunch on the Mara. We were also accompanied on the walking safari by Daniel, one of the local Masai, who whilst on this and a visit to a homestead, gave a very interesting insight into life on the Mara.

Our only regret would have to be only being able to spend a few days at the lodge, and with Patrick and his excellent team, who made the stay so special.
