“KENYAN FOOD AT LAST”
Reviewed 9 February 2014

thanks to the head chef's honoring of my request, we were able to get some ugali, typical kenyan porridge eaten daily by almost all kenyans, and sukuma wiki, its kale accompaniment. this was one of the highlights of our trip. no need to talk about animals and game drives because everyone else has described them. oh, i almost left out the ballon trip with its champagne breakfast which were once in a lifetime experiences.

My wife and I (and a group of six other friends) stayed four nights at the Keekorok Lodge at Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The positives for this property are numerous. The location in the park is outstanding, with magnificent wildlife on display during game drives (big 5 plus numerous types of antelope, birds, monkeys, etc.). On the hotel property itself, we saw hippos, monkeys, mongoose, and birds. The staff are genuinely warm and friendly – everyone from desk staff to restaurant hostesses to bartenders to porters were all fantastic – not merely doing their job by inquiring about us, but going beyond that to communicate their genuine interest in our enjoyment of their special place. The restaurant has a wide variety of food, including Western, Asian, and Indian (including vegetarian) options. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all buffet-style. We loved the naan and chapatis that were baked fresh each night at dinner. The room and bathroom were good-sized, with a comfortable bed and good-quality linens. Maasai warriors process through the dining room each evening and perform a traditional dance on the patio.

The only real negative was that some items were not available – for instance, several of the wines on their wine list were not available and there was a limited selection of beers – at the gift shop, shirts weren’t available in some sizes, jewelry selection was limited, etc. Perhaps this is because we were there in January rather than in summer during the migration (high season), but it was nevertheless a negative for us. As minor points, there is no fitness center, and wi-fi is only available for a fee ($15 per day).

Overall, we had a great time and would recommend this lodge.

We had 2 nights there in suite room. The lodge wasn't good like Sopa or Serena. They turn off electricity at night time. The choice of food for breakfast was poor and dinner also wasn't good. But they have a hippo's lake with special point to see them. Staff is friendly like everywhere in Kenian lodges. If you are not very exacting this place is good for stay for 1-2 days, else you should choose another lodge.
PS location of this lodge is also not bad, local airport is close to lodge and interesting sites also are not far.

From the moment you take on one of the small flights from Nairobi bound for Masai Mara Airstrip Hop in hop off trip, you are bound to experience Awesomeness...

One of the hidden secrets of Sun Africa Hotels - The Keekorok Lodge is a masterpiece amongst the 100 plus lodges and resorts in Masai Area. Hats of the the Group MD Rahul Sood for managing the Lodge the way a natural jungle safari lodge should be managed.

The Lodge has a traditional welcome by the Masai Warriors for every Guest, most probably you will be greeted by the Hotel Manager Mr Steve himself, a Masai Gentleman, full of grace and dignity. A warm welcome by Dominic is one more happy feeling you get here.

The Lodge is in middle of the Masai Mara Wild Reserve and the Lodge doesn't have any Fence, so in the Night the animals are visiting you and not the vice versa unlike other resorts. The Lodge has its on Hippo Bar, from the Hippo Bar deck while sipping on your favorite drink you can see one of the 70 plus Hippos, who have made Keekorok their Home.... The Lodge also has an awesome Elephant Deck for evening Sun Downer Dinners and most stunning Sun Sets and Rises.

The team members name is worth mentioning - Few of them who made mine and my Wife's stay so memorable are as follows: Chef Tara , Edward - Exec Housekeeper, Lapapa - Guide and Masai Warrior, Janet - Housekeeping Lady, Daniel - Guest Relations, Simon - Hippo Bar Attendant, Dorcas - The restaurant Hostess, Jobs - The security Guard..... Bless each one of you, you were some of the best.......

We also experienced not only the jungle safari on road, we in-fact did the BALLOON Safari as well, that cannot be shared in this space in writing, you have to go on this 1 hour hot air balloon flight to feel what we felt, from the thousands of animals below you on the ground to the most awesome Sun Rise, ever witnessed, the full flight finishes with an awesome made to order, hot and fresh and live Champagne breakfast in middle of the jungle...

I would personally recommend, every one on earth to visit Keekorok...

Much Love and Keep Travelling

This is our sixth trip to the Masai Mara and would stay no where else other than at Keekorok Lodge. Our rooms had a lovely makeover with hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities plus a personal safe. Our room was always kept spotless and on our final evening we were presented with fresh fruit which was lovely. The restaurant staff were attentive as usual and there is always a good choice of food. Keekorok is in an enviable position being situated in the middle of the Masai Mara and you do not have to travel far before seeing many of the animals and birds that make the Masai Mara the wonderful place it is. The Masai dancing every evening is remarkable and something we never get tired of watching. Watch out for the animals that also make Keekorok their home, i.e. the Hippos of course and the resident Tree Hyrax.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 30's are nearest to the restaurant and look out onto the green lawns outside of the...

Our entry into Masai Mara was made extra memorable by checking in at Keekorok Lodge. Just outside the perimeter fence, one can spot lions frolicking, and inside, hippos cool off in the lake in the premises. Staff are very friendly, the Masai village is close by and if you cant visit that, the helpful management arrange for a Masai rain dance in the evenings in the restaurant premises. Being a vegetarian isnt a deterrent as the restaurant serves an array of global vegetarian cuisines in their expansive buffet and any special requests are also smilingly catered for by the genial staff. Cottages are charming, with mosquito nets over four posted beds and well serviced, complete with a beautiful verandah at the back to watch birds and monkeys.
Game watching is guaranteed here and if you are lucky you can catch the elusive leopard too. We spotted prides of lions and lionesses with cubs, one group having managed to even kill an elephant, hordes of wildebeest, zebra, cheetah, ostriches, vultures, bison, elephants and hyenas to name a few. Game drives from the resort are well managed and guides are experts in tracking and well informed. Foreign exchange counter at the restaurant offers you a good rate and the souvenir shop beckons attractively. The bar by the hippo pond is a must do and not just for the spirits but for a chat with the friendly bartender Andrew amid grunts from the melee of hippos in the water below. Needless to say a sundowner in the bar is literally that here.
Begin your sojourn into Kenya with a stop at Keekorok Lodge. Keekorok means abundance in Masai language and it certainly lives up to its moniker !

Room Tip: Wifi network is not available in the rooms but one can access it in the restaurant area at a nominal...

I believe the Keekorok Lodge was the first lodge ever built in the Mara dating back to 1962. It is still a very nice facility with a wonderful rustic ambiance. The common areas are quite lovely and the staff is always very willing to please. The centralized location makes for an easy drive to any of the various eco-areas east of the Mara River including the game-filled hilly areas to the east of the lodge and the vast open plains to the north. We experience all five of the Big Five animals our first morning we were there!!

My only complaint with this lodge was the lack of hot water to our room (#42). With that said, we did have the furthest room from the main lodge areas. Please be very specific that you will only accept a room close in! Food was decent and plentiful and the bar served great cocktails and very fine cold Tusker beer. This lodge is a good choice for families or couples. I want to thank the folks at JT Safaris for their help with organizing our booking for this Jan 2014 photo safari holiday. It was fantastic!!

Room Tip: insist on a room close-in to the main lodge. hot water is an issue to the rooms furthest away...
