“A long overdue return to Mara Porini”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

So happy that we decided to include Mara Porini on our 10th year of bush camp adventures with Gamewatchers Porini camps! Our last stay in this camp was 5 years ago- and what a difference these 5 years made in the amount of wildlife in the Ol Kinyei conservancy. We spent the full 3 nights / 4 days on game drives in the conservancy - no need whatsoever to go to the Mara national park for special wildlife encounters. The camp is small, exudes warm hospitality, and provides night time entertainment with animals roaming nearby... such fun! Bill and Simon, our Maasai guides, were absolutely delightful, knowledgeable and openly shared their passion for their beautiful land. Special thanks to all the Maasai staff who enthralled us with their singing and jumping skills to mark our 10th year of safaris with Porini camps. Tutaonana tena!

This was our second trip to Kenya but the first visit to Porina Mara. The word "porini" means "in the wild" apparently and at the Mara Camp (and other Porini Camps), this is exactly where you are! Each tent is set far enough away from the next to allow for privacy and also have their very own verandah area. From our verandah, we could sit and watch the passing parade of herding animals, plus enjoy the prolific birdlife around camp. A stream ran close to our verandah area and at night we could hear the animals splashing in the water whilst drinking, plus the vocalizing of hyenas and baboons. "Jimmy" is the Manager of this camp and he is a very personable fellow - very polite and accommodating. All guests are assigned their very own driver and guide and the days and nights are planned around what you'd like to do and see. The safari vehicles offer a wonderful unrestricted view. Check them out on the Game Watchers website, plus you'll find comprehensive information there about the various porini camps. From the moment you arrive at the camp, everything is taken care of for you. The meals are superb, plus each evening a campfire is lit and before the evening meal, guests gather at the fire for a pre-dinner drink and a review of the day. The setting of this camp is so tranquil; the tents are very comfortable, and this experience is certainly one to be recommended. We saw so many animals and learned so much from our wonderful guides. If you've got a bucket list, put a porini camp on it!

The Mara camp was our 2nd Porini camp, where we stayed 2 nights and we weren't disappointed. Soon after arrival we had a thunderstorm but it quickly cleared and we were able to enjoy our lunch out in the open, Game viewing was excellent and our guides were good, Wilson was a real joker.
I only say sleep quality was average because animals were very active at night, we had hyenas outside the tent we quickly realised that the vervet monkeys were climbing the tree and using our tent as a trampoline! However this is to be expected and not at all a criticism, the beds were very comfortable and it felt very safe.
The conservancy was very quiet and we even had a walking tour which was refreshing. Ol Kinyei was so peaceful and excellent for game viewing.
Great to have another celebration too with more Maasai visit with singing and jumping and a cheesecake arrived for dessert!

My wife and I spent 4 days and 3 nights at Porini Mara Camp two weeks ago. It was our first safari ever and what an experience it was. You are right there in the wilderness, and baboons were climbing up and down the trees right outside our tents. We rarely saw more than one other vehicle while on game drives, as only Porini vehicles had access to Ol Kinyei Conservancy. Our guide Bill and driver Tippa were excellent, and it really showed on our day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, when they were almost always the first to spot any game. Highly recommended!

We stayed for three nights at this camp having experienced many safari camps previously around other African countries. The wildlife was as good as we expected with the open grasslands providing ample opportunity for game viewing. The guides and drivers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Our tent was large and the beds comfortable, but the tent itself looked tired and in need of replacement. The cleaning of the tents was not done properly on a daily basis. The game drive vehicles were in a bad shape and did nothing to enhance the image of Porini. We felt that the food was mediocre, but we didn't really mind as we were there primarily for the animals. On the subject of animals, some purists may be put off by the close proximity of the local cattle and their minders with the odd motorbike travelling through the so called conservancy. The area around local villages seem littered by plastic bags which is a shame!

My two teenaged kids, my mom, her husband and I went to the Porini Mara Camp and the Porini Lion camp in July, 2013 and had the most fantastic experience. Everything was more than we ever had expected. The guides and drivers were very knowledgeable and showed us with great pride both nature and the animals living there. We liked the fact the camps are small and eco-friendly. The tents are big and comfortable and all the meals wonderful. The staffs in both camps were thoughtful, welcoming and also interesting to talk to. They all made sure we had a great safari experience. We were lucky enough to get to the Mara right as the migration started, which was an amazing experience in itself, but we also got to see many, many more animals than we could have ever imagined. We are now looking at all the great pictures we took and dreaming about the next time we get to go back.

in the trees over our tent! This camp was a great experience with wonderful food, excellent guides and well appointed accommodations. This was the second of the Porini camps for us and both were outstanding. We booked through Julie Roggow from Gamewatchers and were very satisfied. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable and were able to take us to see things in the Masai Mara that some people wait days or months to see. Highly recommend this camp and this company.

Room Tip: Tents are well spaced apart and each tent door opens to the back which faces woods, fields, stream...
