This was my fifth time visiting Mara and I have always stayed with Porini camps because they offer a unique combination of things that no other camp in Mara offers. They have an excellent company called game watchers that plans your trip from the minute you land in Nairobi to your flight back home. Hildy was extremely helpful.Their arrangements are always impeccable from the guys who pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel, then drop you to your domestics flights within Kenya and finally the stay at Porini camps where everything you think of is taken care of. I love their eco friendly approach to tourism and the fact that they are the original camps that spearheaded the conservancy approach to tourism in Africa. The conservancies benefits the community and are the greatest effort towards wild life conservation. The experience of a game drive in a conservancy is unparalleled because of the lack of crowds of cars and people and also the landscape which is spectacular. Porini camps have the best guides and are situated in the best locations in Mara. What I love about Mara Porini is the unbelievably beautiful acacia woodwinds lands. I can never visit mara and not visit Mara Porini. I always love seeing my friends, Ben and Tippa. Chloe the manager arranged a marvelous bush dinner for us . Overall two thumbs up!!

This was our second stay via Game Watchers itinerary and well worthwhile because we immediately understood the difference when we came across a cheetah mother with five cubs. If this had been in the national park within 5 minutes 20 or so trucks would have descended on the team and totally interrupted her hunt which resulted with a kill to feed her offspring. This was confirmed the next day in our trip to National park in Masai Mara where in the afternoon a leopard was spotted and immediately there were 25 vehicles straining to get close as they have to stay on the track. My belief now is that a mother with clubs would be very hassled. The personal service and keen interest in our well being was always evident along with great food and superior location.

Room Tip: This is where you really get up close and personal with the animals without the crowds. I would recommend these camps to any first time viewer

This was our third Porini camp, had been to Amboseli and Rhino Camps and finished off here at Porini Mara. Originally Gamewatchers put us into Porini Lion, but hearing that we were interested in as quiet a camp experience as possible, they put us in Porini Mara as it only has 6 tents. The location is amazing, nestled in a little spot by a creek. At night you hear the wildebeest, hyaenas and lions all around!

Our guides, Ben and Jasphut (sp?) were phenomenal! While I'm thrilled we saw lions, that wasn't my primary focus for safari, but MAN! We spent so much time surrounded by the Ol Kinyei lions, it was unbelievable! And the guides knew all of the lions and the stories about them all. We were even lucky enough to see the elusive, solitary female Nenkume on our last drive.

One day we went to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The wildebeest migration had started early so we were looking forward to seeing giant masses of wildebeest. We did see that as well as giant masses of tourists. Well, upwards of 10 vans around a lioness eating. Having just spent all of our time at Porini Camps, where you are so fortunate to be the only guests in the conservancy, this was startling and a negative experience. On top of that, we stopped at a scenic lookout and were greeted with another lodge's jeep that had stopped for lunch throwing all of their CARDBOARD boxed lunches into the overflowing trash cans. Sadly the baboons there had become scavengers of the trash, and one of the tourist from this other jeep just tossed his chips into a garbage pile near a baboon! Seriously? Again, as I have mentioned on my other Porini reviews, everything that was packed out for our picnics was packed right back into camp. Not even apple cores where tossed onto the ground. All of our reusable utensils, plates, cups and food waste came back with us. Ben told us that he had seen the driver for the lodge throw stones at a baboon. He said to the driver that perhaps they shouldn't leave all of this trash out in the wild! Love! Again, the care of the environment and the wildlife is truly at the heart of Porini Camps!

We did see an amazing amount of hippos at the river and tons of wildebeest. And tons of vultures scavenging on the remains of many wildebeest. The flies were pretty bad, due to the wildebeest numbers, apparently. After that experience, I'm not sure I'd go back into the Reserve. However, some people we met (and have contacted after we got home) said they had a great visit to the Reserve, so who knows. I think a lot depends on the day.

It was a relief to be back in Ol Kinyei, where we once again didn't see any other jeeps! Yay!

Back to our guides, Ben and Jasphut (sp?). Ben was an great driver, really very keen on the tracking of animals. We spent nearly an hour looking for a leopard whose kills was up in a tree. Ben said that the cat was nearby as they don't leave the area when their food is there. We never saw the leopard, but it was so thrilling driving ever so slowly, creeping into the tiniest nooks and crannies searching for this creature!

We've been back several weeks now and as I look at the pictures and write this review my heart longs for our next visit to Kenya and to go out on safari w/ Porini Camps and Gamewatchers. Between their relationship with the local people, their commitment to eco-tourism and the AMAZING wildlife experiences we had, no doubt we'll be back with Porini! Thanks for the amazing times!

Booked our 6 night safari through Gamewatchers, Steve was very helpful and patient with us. Porini Mara Camp was the second part of Porini experience, loved this camp! Very small and quiet, staff were excellent. Sat around the fire in the evening before dinner, the food was great. Tents were spacious and had a nice sitting out area where we watched monkeys playing in the trees. The game drives were outstanding, had our best Elephant and Lion experience here. The guides were amazing, the conservancy was perfect as Porini Mara is the only camp on the conservancy, so no other vehicles around. Can't say enough about this camp and will return!

We booked our holiday through Gamewatchers. The level of service we received throughout was excellent and as two female travellers felt very safe from the moment we landed in Nairobi. Having stayed at Porini Lion, Amboseli and Rhino camps three years ago we knew how very special a safari at a Porini Camp would be. Porini Mara was fabulous, we were given a very warm welcome and our guide Wilson and spotter were exceptional. Everything about this camp and the conservancy is wonderful and we can't rate it highly enough! We are already saving up to come back again!
