“Amazing experience”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

We can not thank stella and her team for the wonderful experience we had camping in the mara explorer. words can not describe the magic and how special we were made to feel during our stay. this is a must for anybody who wants to experience the bush and know the magic of being under canvas at luxury. It was so sad to leave. the night time sounds of the birds and hippos will stay we us forever. we were lucky to catch part of a storm which was a sight to see.

Room Tip: each tent is wonderful and it is so special as only ten tents.

We stayed at 4 lodges/camps on our safari to East Africa and hands down the greatest place we stayed was Mara Explorer. The staff is amazingly helpful and friendly and the food and wine outstanding. Our server for meals Maureen was absolutely wonderful!!

The camp location on the river is the best we experienced and we were lucky enough to get tent 4 which is on the river bend and has a herd of 30+ hippos residing just a few yards from our tent deck – talk about being in the wild!! We had to keep pinching ourselves to remember we weren’t dreaming! We had great fun taking baths in the outdoor tub and watching the hippos watching us - too cool for words!!

Our guide was Reuben and he was fantastic taking the time to show us the little things in addition to the big ones. We saw everything in great numbers - lions, elephants, leopards. cheetahs, servals, crocodiles, giraffes, and the many grazing animals were ever present.

We loved the sharing of days with other guests at the fire pit and the lounge area - the camaraderie was fantastic.

We had the best 3 days of our life and can’t wait to come back.

Explorer location just minutes from the airport is also a plus.

Staying at the Mara Explorer Camp is like having 2 completely different, but amazing, experiences in 1 trip! We went for our honeymoon and believe it was the best trip we could have ever taken. We didn't stop talking about wanting to return with our future children in a few years!

On the one hand, there is the mind-blowing experience that is the safari, which is just incredible. The camp's cars are new and very comfortable and spacious. They provide 3 drives a day, however we recommend that at least on the first morning, you ask the camp to pack your breakfast so that you can have an extended morning drive, and picnic along the Mara river. The morning is the best time to see the animals, there is so much activity and everyone comes out, so it is the optimal time to be out a little longer, to see more. John was a wonderful guide who was full of knowledge and answered all of our questions on the trips. He knew where all the animals were, and towards the end of our trip, focused on our favorite animals-- without us even asking. When he was onto something good, he wouldn't tell us what we were about to see until we arrived to see it ourselves. It always kept the rides suspenseful and incredibly rewarding. He got us within meters of lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, you name it. We had one of the most emotionally and mentally rewarding experiences of our lives thanks to John. It was very sad to say goodbye to him.

Then on the other hand is the impeccable service at the camp, it could not even be improved. We were greeted at the airstrip with wet towels to clean our hands and faces, then brought to the quiet, intimate, and unique camp, situated along gorgeous river scenery. The tents are fabulous, only 10 in the camp, and spaciously placed to provide plenty of privacy between them. It is certainly private enough to take a bath in the outdoor tub without any concern of being seen. Ours was sitting just overlooking a hippo hangout, and they don't make too much noise by the way, it's cute to be near them, not annoying at all. The tents are so clean, so well kept, and because the weather was perfect during our stay, we would leave the tent completely open during the mornings, and we would return from safari to find the staff had zipped it up for us at night. During our dinner, they would place hot water bottles in the bed to warm it up. For our 5:30am wake up call, they would come to our tent to wake us up with a tray of tea and cookies. We couldn't stop giggling at how wonderful the service was!

Power is available during certain hours of the day which we found admirable and Eco friendly. It was off while we were out on safari anyway, so we did not feel inconvenienced at all. However the wifi was too weak to work during our stay, so we had to go to their sister camp, just 5 min away, to check email.

On our first night, we were the only guests, so after returning from our first safari, the staff had surprised us with setting up a table at our tent, and lighting the deck with lanterns. It was so cute and we were so touched. On our last night, the staff mentioned that there was something special for dinner, and when they came to escort us, they led us through this candle lit path to an outdoor bush dinner. It was so nice! We loved how they cared so much to surprise us all the time, we felt so special and loved, in every element of it all!

The meals are also worth mentioning because every meal is at least a 3 course affair. And oh my goodness, so delicious! Every dish, every meal, was better than the last. We left feeling very full and a little fatter :-).

Overall, I can't say enough wonderful things about the camp, you just have to experience it for yourself. It is the most worthy trip.

This is our 3rd trip to Mara Explorer and it is still one of the best camps in the Mara. Management has changed and the new manager, George is a delight and can't do enough for his guests. It was fairly quiet during our 4 days which suited the four of us down to the ground. Even when it has been busier, it still feels spacious and comfortable. The tents are still very comfortable and there are plenty of facilities within them. One of the delights is a "hottie" which is very welcome when the nights get a little bit cooler. The other is the early morning wakeup call with fresh tea/coffee and biscuits. The greatest asset this camp has is Shadrack the chef, who conjures up the most magnificient food, with all sorts of choices and nothing is too much trouble for him. The other great asset is Maureen (aka Smiler) who looks after us, food and drink wise with a permanent smile and a charming manner. Every single member of staff is a credit to the company, from the Askaris (guards) onwards. The holiday was a complete joy and hopefully we will be back to the Explorer in November. Can't wait!!

Room Tip: They are all good, but geriatrics like me chose number 9 as it is fairly near to the mess tent.

This place was a highlight on my trip! From the first pickup to the minute I left the Mara, I couldn't have been in better hands! George was a great host - anticipating my every need and Noor made sure I was never hungry with the 5-7 course meals. Yum!

We spent hours with Joseph on our game drives and he was the best! He was full of information and was so patient in finding the animals. No matter what we asked, he was happy to oblige and always smiled and said "hakuna matata"

We miss this place and the hospitality already. While we thought this might be a once in a lifetime trip before we arrived, we are already planning our return! It was absolute heaven on earth.

Thank you for everything Mara Explorer team! You are truly a world-class place!

Room Tip: All rooms are great!

This trip was our 14th to the Masai Mara. Six of the last seven times we stayed in the Mara Explorer camp. We recognized many of the staff from our previous visits and they always greet us by name. Small camp with a maximum of twenty guests in ten "tents". While the accommodations have canvas sides and top, it is not a tent as one would normally think of a tent. It is better than any five star resort or hotel we have stayed in. We love January as the Mara is less crowded and the Explorer camp is not crowded and very private. It is awesome for us to hear the lions roar in the distance or the nearby elephants grazing. There are several "guards" on duty 24 hours a day to walk you to and from your tent, but we love the proximity to the animals. We spent nine days in Kenya and the who trip was at Mara Explorer; truly I could spend even more time there. The worst part was leaving after nine days and knowing it would be another year before we could enjoy the Mara and be spoiled again. The food was outstanding and the service extraordinary.

Room Tip: I don't think there are any rooms less than outstanding. We stayed in number 4 which is the fart...

I honestly can't say enough great things about the Heritage Mara Explorer Camp. I've stayed there twice in the past few years and both trips were absolutely fantastic. The staff are what really makes this place stand out from the crowd; every single person is lovely! From the manager to the chefs (the food is excellent) to the waiter/waitresses who know your name and greet you every day to each of the highly trained and incredibly knowledgeable guides (I've always had James as a guide, whose depth of knowledge is truly amazing) to the guards who escort you to and from your tent in the evening and the stewards (little things like hot water bottle waiting for you every night!). Special shout-out to the young gardener who was busy at work but dropped everything to offer to carry our bags to the car for us - it's that kind of 'going the extra mile' and making the service they offer a truly personal, friendly experience that makes this place what it is.

This trip, we saw all of the Big Five by the second day and saw the most astonishing sight of a cheetah kill an impala right by our vehicle. Awe-inspiring! The Mara is just beautiful to drive through - combine your first two game drives in the morning and take a longer trip out with a packed breakfast. We did that each morning and it was lovely!

We stayed in Tent 4, which is as lovely as ever - with hippos just below in the river. The food was as excellent as last time I visited two years ago. On our last night, we were taken to a lovely spot for a 'bush dinner' which was just gorgeous.

I'll definitely be back - and soon, I hope! Thanks again to EVERYONE at Mara Explorer for making our last visit so lovely.
