One of our best Safari experiences ever. From the 'Karibu' greeting on arrival to the farewell hugs with established friends on departure we could find no fault with Mara Explorer Camp. Our knowledgeable guide Joseph was pointing out interesting sights from the well equipped (rain proof) Land Rover before we even reached camp - a few kilometers away - and over the next four days there is little we did not see and the trips were always different, comfortable and fascinating (the surprise Sundowner Sunset under the 'lone tree' a highlight. Even out of season there still appears to be a mini migration. We had an amazing three nights in tent 4 amongst the resident hippos and the food from Shadrack was simply amazing for such a remote spot in the middle of the bush. A special commendation to George, the Camp Manager for taking care of every detail, always available and attentive, for pulling together such a wonderful overall experience.

Room Tip: Room 4 is a really special experience - but you have to be happy living amoungst the boisterous nois...

We stayed at Exporer for 3 nights in April after staying at Intrepids. Our tent, 4, overlooked the bend in the river and was the most amazing, secluded spot. We had the hippo family living just outside our tent with a hippo beach as well as the river. They do make noisy neighbours but who needs sleep when you are in such a superb place? We didnt think anywhere could be as good as Intrepids but then we arrived at Explorer. As we walked into the reception area and sat looking out over the river we immediately relaxed and knew we were in paradise. This camp is so intimate and personal and the small team of staff all greet you by name and pamper to your every need - nothing is too much trouble for them. George, the manager, is all around to greet you and have a chat - he is a superb host. We were very impressed with everything about this camp: the tents are comfy, cosy and housekeeping is excellent, the food is absolutely amazing and the restaurant overlooks the river. You could not ask for a more beautiful and relaxing place. The camp is not fenced so after dark you have to radio for an escort to bring you to dinner - this just adds to the experience. The guides are all fantastic. We were lucky enough to have Raphael, who has 12 years experience, and he was fabulous. We had him for all 8 days that we were there. We saw the big 5 on the first 2 game drives so set him different challenges each day - he delivered on every drive. Every day we saw something different and had different experiences. The jeeps are very comfy and even have a mini bar! We had a wonderful bush dinner one night which was a real treat and very romantic. If you have any doubts about where to stay in the Masai Mara then look no further and stay here - you will not be disappointed and it is well worth the extra money. Our holiday was a holiday of a lifetime, a one off but we are already planning our next trip back to Explorer. We loved it.

Room Tip: Tent 4 is definitely the best as it overlooks the hippos. Be prepared for interrupted sleep! But a f...

Very nice, comfortable and friendly place as 'basic camp' for your game trips. Close to the airstrip. Great food, very tastefull dinner. Good introduction to the Kenyan Masai Culture. Tented rooms were like 'normal' hotelrooms, clean, nice and efficient.

Loved the atmosphere - a combination of sophistication mixed with the wild side of Africa. Staff remember your name from the first meeting. Staff show interest in how your day is unfolding and all the exciting animal sightings. The wait staff in the dinning room and lounge were efficient. The best of all was the Safari driver who made certain both sides of the jeep had opportunity for equal photos by turning the vehicle around and positioning for best photos. He turned the engine off to reduce vibration for best photos. He was knowledgeable about the wild life species. He was polite, efficient, and on time.

I celebrated my birthday at the Mara Explorer Camp in August 2013. Of all the parks I have been to, none beats the Masai Mara. Beyond the splendor the park offers, the Mara Explorer Camp does an exceptional job of making you one with nature. From the people, to the tents, to the food, to the environment... it all adds up to an unforgettable experience. Our guide Matthew was amazing. His game spotting and tracking ability is incredible. We saw all the big five except the rhinos. We watched cheetahs hunt, male lions fight for territory and females, wildebeest crossing the river..... all these from a few meters, in our safari jeep. Steve, the manager was not only a great host but also became a great friend. The experience offered by the Mara Explorer Camp can not be expressed by words. I highly recommend that anybody planning to visit the Masai Mara stays at the Mara Explorer Camp. I will definitely be going back!

Room Tip: Noisy neighbors....... the hippos :)
