Attraction details
Owner description: The Mara is a beautiful but sensitive environment that can survive only if properly respected. Well-watered by the Mara River, enjoying abundant vegetation, wildlife and rainfall, its ecology would appear, at first sight, to be relatively resilient. It also appears to have withstood the erosive effects of huge numbers of visiting tourists extraordinarily well. There are signs, however, that the delicate balance between tourist numbers and wildlife populations cannot be properly maintained for much longer as evidenced by the reduction in the protective vegetation cover and the emergence of a series of dust bowls. Meanwhile, the Reserve is host to 95 species of mammals, amphibians and other reptiles and 485 species of birds. During the dry season (July to October) it also hosts a major concentration of migratory herbivores including about 250,000 zebra and 1.3 million wildebeest. Amongst the list of easy-to-view species are: gazelle, elephant, topi, buffalo, lion (Kenya's largest population), black rhino, hippo, hyena, giraffe, leopard and mongoose.

We enjoyed seeing the animals - up close and in their home environment.

“my week in Kenya”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2012

Everything worked for the whole week. In spite of starting out late from Nairobi, I was put with a fun group to begin the safari. Moses was an excellent driver and guide. The other driver/guide I was with, Martin, was equally wonderful. I'm not sure how all the arrangements happened once I was in Masai Mara, but I always had a place to sleep, food when I was hungry, and interesting people to travel with. In spite of different travelers having different itineraries, everything kept working smoothly. I enjoyed being with various groups of people and met visitors from all over the world. The excitement kept going every day.

My days at Mombasa were fun. I was able to take a day trip to Wasini Island, which was truly great. The driver - Dominick - who picked me up at the Mombasa airport, also drove me back to the airport for the return flights. He helped arrange the trip to Wasini Island and was very helpful about getting around Mombasa as well. Thank you for arranging to have me picked up at the airport. That made getting to the Kahama Hotel so easy.

Well managed, not too busy, as much wildlife as you could possibly want - definitely the best part of the MMNR!

“Great Animal viewing with few other Landrovers”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

The Guide/Driver we had called Martin, did a fantastic job of finding us 4 of the big 5 as well as many other animals. He was very knowledgeable on animals and birds, and had a great sense of humour. We really enjoyed all our outings thanks to Martin.
