My Kenyan wife and I spend 5 nights in Mombassa at Dancourt Hotel. The location is very good in the city center and within walking distance to Fort Jesus. The building itself is not bad - room was clean and spacious and with hot water, tv and a/c. Safe was out of order - no batteries installed - and reception claimed it was because it did not work. However, I saw two other rooms with the same problem. We had our room on first floor, and it seems like almost all room in this hotel only have view to a concrete wall about three meters from the window - almost no daylight! And there is a nightclub in the same compound as the hotel (They are neighbours), adding lots of noise during the weekend! They don't accept any credit cards - cash only.
The very bad thing is the attitude and service from the staff - especially in the morning restaurant. You - the customer - is obviously bothering them. Tables often very dusty, and a polite request to the staff to vipe the table is like offending them...... My wife had due to her period put a little blood spot on the bedsheet. We had put it aside for cleaning. Next day, one of the waiters ask us to report to the reception (despite we just talked to them before) and we are told that costs extra, since sheets are hand washed. Since the hotels laundry facilities are not of us to concern about, we of course reject that and ask for the manager. Three days later, despite us daily asking for the manager, he does not appear, and upon check-out, the receptionist tells us he has quitted. My wife is educated in the hotel business and have never experienced anything like this before.....
Good: Clean, big room with good facilities. Bad: No view, dark and noisy, bad attitude from staff. No credit card payment.
We will for sure find another hotel next time we are in Mombassa!
