Owner description: Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction. The fort, located along the coastline near the Old Town, is a monumental piece of architecture that was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort has a museum that displays various artifacts from the era where Mombasa served as a transit point for the slave trade and commodities, and which enjoyed regular visits by seafarers and the like.

“History as it lives and breathes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

Unlike the rest of Mombasa city, Fort Jesus looks better today than it did 100 years ago. It has been well maintained and is in good repair - for a 600-year-old building! It's also got an unobtrusive museum within with a lot of intelligently laid out artefacts and sites of interest throughout the fortress that reek of its multi-ethnic history. You can see why the Portuguese built it - and why it has remained a strategic emplacement ever since.

“BEWARE OF THE GUIDES!!!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

they stand at the entrance and ask for money to guide you through the monument, but trust me they are conmen, do not pay them more than 300/- and make sure to specify that they will have to be with you for 1hour or more or else they will quickly explain everything and tell you its done without showing you all the places in the fort :)

“Beautiful Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

This place is simply beautiful....the clear blue water theres a real sense of history, the only downfall I would probably say is to be careful of the local as they seem to be able to smell tourists/visitors and tend to harass unless your firm but its definitely worth a visit its simply beautiful ..... my dad take me here it was part of his childhood so i felt a real connection whilst visiting

“Interesting Even if Histroy isn't Your Thing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014

I'm not really into History but thoroughly enjoyed the trip to the Fort Jesus Museum. It's definitely worth hiring a guide (I think we paid 1000ks) otherwise you end up just wandering around like a random!
