“South Coast from Kenya”
Reviewed 9 August 2008

The South Coast from Mombasa has a very nice white beach and possibilities for a short safari in the Shimba Hills. You´ll find small and exclusive resorts and even private houses in the Hills. Great restaurants like Ali Barbours Cave and nice bars to go to in the evening. Great for holidays with children, or without, and very good for companies who want to send the staff for teambuilding. Families can rent a hole villa and its also possible to spend the hole winterperiod without lots of money. Nice apartments or cottages at the beach are also an option. Go there once and you want to go there every year.

“Funzi Island”
Reviewed 15 July 2008

Funzi is a beautiful island south of Mombasa and within easy reach of the Diani beach area so loved by tourists to Kenya. It is a wildlife haven where you can find dolphins, turtles, whale sharks and a vast array of bird life in the nearby mangroves. Just off the island is a sandbar which rises out of the sea at low tide and this has been used by top modelling agencies for photo shoots . We have been visiting the island for the past 15 years having discovered it on a day trip. We have stayed at the moderately priced Funzi Bay Resort on the island where we have enjoyed excellent food and hospitality. Their ofice can be found in Diani past Barclays Bank on the left hand side. Day trips and overnight stays are possible. On the island you can visit the local village and see some of the work being undertaken by the UK registered charity set up to help improve conditions for the local population- including a medical clinic and a new school facility. You can learn more about this ,the island and the people in advance of your visit by going to www.funzi.org.uk It is also possible to arrange to look round these projectsand hear more from local people by contacting the charity in advance through the website. They can arrange for you to be shown round and to have a real African experience. The charity can also arrange trips to see the birdlife and to the sandbar with profits going to support their health and education work. It's even possible to arrange through the charity to stay with an African family in the village . As regular visitors to the island - at least twice a year for the past 15- we are happy to provide people with more help and advice on taking a trip to this little corner of Kenyan paradise.

“my veiw on mombasa and surrounds”
Reviewed 15 April 2008

I have been a number of times to the coast. Rate my experience as OK. Hotels are very costly, taxi at night would appear to be the same, cost wise.

Lovely open air nightclubs were the best feature of my trips, Tembo disco in particular, adults of all ages would enjoy this experience immensely. During the day, the beach would be your main option. Mombasa town is awful, abject poverty. You can take a ride to one of the game lodges some way off, normally takes the entire day and somewhat costly.

Be warned. If you are on your own, and male, the Kenyan police are a dismal lot. It is not unknown of them to follow you to your hotel, arrest you, accuse you of some crime, in order to extract a bribe, upwards of £2000. Fact, but true, the Kenyan police have a dismal record of corruption, just talk to the locals. Best to avoid the tourist police if you can help it.

Overall, i have enjoyed my trips to the coast, be prepared to be pestered by vendors on the beach, should not be a problem.

For me, Nairobi is a better option. Cheaper accommodation, wider choice of restauarant. Bumping into the police, is thankfully less likely.

“The worst holiday ever Africa”
Reviewed 4 December 2007

awfull place felt safer with the animals on a safarri. felt very unsafe. lots of poverty and children with nothing not even any shoes or water... what we gave to them. did not even get to them. Could not give anything personally to an individual person.
Will not go back there ever. Tried to help. but everything you want to give, never gets to the people in needy !!!!
