“Stay here only if you need to be in this part of Beijing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2013

Beijing is big town .... so I guess if you have to be in this tech part of the Chinese capital. I work in the web industry and it is close to the office that I had to visit for business. If you are hoping to be close to tourist sites, forget it.They are a long way away. Okay so much for what matters. The room is big and bright. Comfy beds, good shower in a well appointed bathroom. However, the equipment in the room needs updating. There is no wifi in the room, just one data cable. That is a pain point in these days of multiple devices (for instance, I can't use my wifi on my phone to check emails). There is wifi in the lobby but that just does cut it. I was staying by myself but if I had my spouse staying as well that would be a problem. Breakfast was interesting. The food was ok. But the service was very poor. There are plenty of staff but they don';t seem to care. I stayed for 6 nights and had five breakfasts. I never managed to get a spoon to stir my coffee. they are very slow to clean away plates and replace silverware. This is annoying stuff. Also the bar in lobby is awful, perhaps bizarre. Certainly not a place to wind down after work. .

Location: The Wenjin Hotel is in the midst of the high technology Haidian district, ideally located for access to Tsinghua University.
Advice: If your plans center on tourism, you may want to find a hotel closer to downtown. This location requires extensive reliance on the subway or taxi. The subways are fast but crowded, while taxi trips downtown are likely to face major traffic delays.

Rooms and Services: The rooms were large, clean and well furnished, with spotless bathrooms and decent internet. The breakfast buffet was delicious with lots of traditional Chinese options.
Advice: Use the bottled water and avoid unpeeled fruit and vegetables.
Advice: Enjoy the good local restaurants in the area, including an excellent hot pot restaurant across the street and a fine duck restaurant a block down the road. If you are feeling extremely adventurous, explore the tiny restaurants with assorted live specialties (frogs etc) off the alley a couple of blocks down the road.

Transportation: Taxi fares for travel from the airport to the hotel varied wildly.
95 rmb Singaporan Chinese woman speaking Chinese
98 rmb Asian American man with compass and map speaking English
110 rmb French woman speaking English
350 rmb Very tired German American speaking English
Advice: Use an official taxi with the meter running. Beware of referrals to unofficial taxis.

The hotel has very clean and spacious rooms. The people are very nice and helping. The hotel is located close to Silicon-valley of Beijing and is also close to many universities.

only problem I faced was having very people who can speak English.

The room was spacious and light. The bed was big and comfy. It was 10 min walk from the place that we were doing business. If you are visiting as a tourist then I would probably not recommend it as its a bit far from the city sights but good value for money and the food was not bad.

Room Tip: Speak Chinese......

The hotel was very clean and our corner room was gorgeous and comfortable. It is located however far from the tourist areas (forty minutes in traffic to the Forbidden City). Few of the staff speak English and none of the "Western food" was edible but if you want to see how real Chinese people live, it is amazing. Our hotel was at the South Gate of the second most prestigious university in Bejjing Tsingua University. The university owns the hotel. My husband was there to teach a class in the business school. It was both intimidating but exciting to join the throes of Chinese enjoying a very mild weather night. Crossing the street is an adventure especially at night. Most bicycles and scooters have no headlights. And no vehicles give any slack to pedestrians. We loved seeing the hair salons on a Sunday night that were blasting music outside and had huge spinning barber poles. They were all packed with young people seeking weird haircuts.
This is a great choice for a hotel if you want to be immersed in real Chinese life.

Room Tip: Request an upper floor corner room.

I would really like to rate this hotel four stars because I think the staff are genuinely doing their best to serve its customers. But I just can't. First the good news. The hotel is of a reasonably good overall standard, with some nice restaurants within a fair walking distance. It is also close to the Tsinghua Science Park, if that's where you are visiting. Now for the not-so-good news. First though, a disclaimer: I really don't think I should be excusing service delivery that does not quite hit the mark just because this is a Chinese hotel. For instance, English comprehension should be high on the list for room service, but it isn't. Baked beans (at breakfast) should not threaten the enamel on your teeth with their hardness. And it should not take 20 minutes in the business center to try to print one page, cruising through three computers and two printers in the process, and still not succeeding. I'm sorry if I sound haughty, but in fact I really would like this hotel to succeed. However, somehow, it is not quite there. That said, I will probably stay here again since it's so close to our office in Beijing. But next time I'll steer clear of the baked beans...

Room Tip: The north-facing rooms are quieter.

The location is convenient for the University or Technology Park visits but I would choose a taxi ride, and stay elsewhere next time and forego the location convenience. The Lobby area was nice on the surface, made to impress and kept up, but my room was in poor shape. Mildew stains so bad in Shower, I didn't want to step foot in, bottom seal that kept door from closing and soaked everything, etc. Bathroom pocket door that banged against the wall all night - had my own perpetual motion machine. Service at its restaurant was difficult - evidently all beer but one on the menu was out - beer was warm - buffet had some issues (crud in the milk that ruins your appetite, difficulty getting an egg cooked, etc) - Service was not worked out very well - maybe if you spoke chinese? Didn't seat you at a table - found it yourself (fine but..... someone else comes and takes your table not so fine, cause you had to go get coffee since they didn't pour for you). Couldn't get a receipt in the restaurant after charging to the room - again a language issue but if they knew (were trained by mgmt) how western business people were served throughout the world, you don't need to know the word for receipt, after you sign, you get a copy. I've stayed at a number of better places nearby and in Shanghai for the same or less.
