Obviously this isn't the absolute cream of the crop in Bejing, but it provides exactly what you would expect and hope for in this price category - good, clean rooms and efficient, helpful staff.

Some might consider the location a little awkward, but this is not such a problem given the cheap taxi prices in Beijing, plus I gather there is a metro station nearby for the penny-pinchers. Quite handy was the supermarket downstairs in the nearby shopping centre. As ever, free wifi in the lobby.

For those not wanting to go the five star splurge in Beijing, I would say this is a good option at a reasonable price, and I would have no problem staying there again.

My wife and I booked a non-refundable, advance purchase stay at the Doubletree in Beijing for this October and we were really looking forward to our trip. However, my wife is now pregnant and we are not able to travel in October.

As noted the booking was non-refundable, however due to the circumstances the hotel (through Mr Yu, the Front Office Manager) very generously agreed to refund our booking despite the non-refundable nature of the booking.

We have of course not stayed at the hotel and therefore cannot comment beyond saying that the customer service we have received prior to our proposed trip has been magnificent and we very grateful for the hotel's generosity in this regard.

My husband and I did our research ( unlike some of the complainers here). We knew exactly where the hotel was located and the location was perfect for us. The hotel staff from the Front Desk to Housekeeping was excellent , mostly all of them spoke English well, very helpful, great breakfast every morning and Happy Hour at the Executive Lounge.

The rush hour in the a.m and usually between 5 pm -7 pm is not hotel's fault. It is the fact of living in a huge city. Most of the time we used taxis ( hired our own to the Great Wall) few times subways, like going to the Summer Palace ( fastest way to get there) a bus only once or twice. You can get a little card with hotel address written in Chinese
to show to the taxi driver. - Easy!

Thank You all very much!! I wish one day we can return to your wonderful hotel!

This hotel has a very good the customer focus and the staff is very helpful. The hotel is very clean and calm in the lobby ( not a lot of noise). We woke up early the first morning and went to the breakfast area just to get a cup of coffee and at that time we met Sambora who was very understanding and let us have some coffee and wait about 45 minutes until the opening of the breakfast service. She saw us a few days later and ask how we were feeling- it was nice to know that she was looking out for customers. Also Lana was one of our servers and she was nice.

Other hotel staff was Will in the restaurant on the 3rd floor and Snow in the business center who helped with getting the tour number and speaking to the tour office - however Tony did speak good English.

The breakfast is one that offers a variety of foods to all from eggs to order to Dim Sun - this is not to be missed. We decided to pay extra for the breakfast when booking the room and it was a good choice. There is a little coffee pastry shop around the bend from the hotel ( same side of the street) but the hotel breakfast was well worth the extra few dollars spent. Normally we are not fans of the hotel breakfast traveling extensively in Europe but the hotel breakfast at the Doubletree was worth it. Great choice of food.

Shopping for bottled water and snacks was easy- near the hotel with a bakery that had free samples ( same as described above) about 200 feet from the door and then then there was a department store next to it but if you went to the basement you could find all the drinks and snacks needed for the day. Another good reason to select this hotel.

Out room was made up each day in it was spotless.

Overall a great hotel to stay at and now for a few other words on the trip such as the bus to the city and subway operations:

Arrived in Beijing Airport and took Bus number 7 - the eighth stop from the airport to the hotel. Having the street name of the hotel really helps since it is the same name as the stop. The stop is a few hundred feet from the hotel ( as you approach the stop the hotel is on the left) with a pedestrian overpass with stairs.

At the check in we were served a couple of free warm cookies a nice touch.

Day 1- took hotel shuttle to the subway to Forbidden City. The hotel bus departed at only three times in the morning and we are early starters heading out to see the sites before the crowds start. I would advise taking bus 109 to the subway instead. The subway ride is really cheap and once we took our first trip it was simple the screens are in English. Or if you want you can ride bus 109 all the way to the back of the Forbidded City. We took it to the subways then rode them to the different locations. After the first day of touring and still having some jet lag we wen to the 3rd floor restaurant and had the Peking Duck dinner it was very good.
Day2- Private tour to Great Wall and Ming Tombs. We wanted to avoid picking up passengers at hotels and sitting on a bus for maybe an hour as we drove around the city. Also the tours stops to additional factories. Been there done that in Egypt and discovered factory tours are now what we want to spend time seeing. But they are much cheaper. Lunch included and some nice shoppping also.
Day 2-Prvate tour to Terracotta warriorers.
Both private tours were arranged by Tony from Beijing Discovery Tours. Phone number 13801388203 in Beiging - I tried to call from the states but it did not work on the number from the internet so we waited and called from Beijing.. Total cost for 2 adults -1,000 USD. www.beijingdiscoverytours.com which included pick up at the hotel-airport transit help-tickets - meet and greet in Xian buy a tour guide and a stop at the city wall and lunch prior to going to the exhibit.
Tours were booked after we arrived. To avoid a trip to the office we had a credit card hold and paid in cash on the day of the first tour. This office is not easy to find so have the tour guide meet you at the hotel and take you to the tour office.
Day 4- Again we took Bus 109 to subway and to Tianammen Square and then to Mao's Tomb. You must arrive early- 0800 and check camera, back pack across the street- just wait in line and someone will pull you out of line and direct you to where to store your items. Wait was 45 min. From there - Temple of Heaven- a nice park. Shopped at the Pear Market across the street and did not buy a thing because the vendors were very pushy. But there is a ton of stuff to pick over and if you walk away the price begins to fall from the initial offering. From there we hopped on a subway to the - the Summer Palace- when you exit from the stop enter the site from the side where the McDonalds is located do not go around to the other side of the park. Wear walking shoes here since you will be climbing some rock stairs. All trips were by subway - Our Tour guide Sunny from discovery tour told us were alll of the stops were located to see some of the other sites.
Day 5 - Travel day to Hong Kong- we should have had a taxi pick us up at the hotel to drive us to the bus station andr hotel to pick up public airport transport bus ( same bus as you took to reach the hotel). We walked over the foot bridge and started walking to it but that was a mistake and hailed a taxi- take a taxi from the hotel. It was difficult to flag down a taxi. Have the front desk write down the address as to where to pick up the bus which is next to a hotel -the cost per person was 16 RBM's per person. There is an airport bus schedule. we took the 0930 and barely made our flight because we had to add addiotional time to go to Terminal C.

Reading all the excellent reviews (mind you half of them are from the same tour group) I decided to give it a try and book this hotel for our first trip to Beijing.
We consider that for the money, we could have booked something much better and in a better location.
First, it is almost impossible to find the hotel name written in characters which will make it impossible for you to communicate with the taxi driver...We had to stop at another hotel and make the staff there write the address for the driver.
Second, the suburban location is very bad...The hotel is in front of a very busy and noisy highway (our room had bad insulation from traffic noise) the traffic from about 5pm is terrible and goes well into the evening and
Third, the location is awful...To get a taxi to take you there in the evening is a feat and the shuttle only runs 3 times in the morning to the closest metro station...At the evening you are totally on your own.
As for the tours, we decided to book a Great Wall tour through the concierge and paid a high Y320 each because we thought the tour would be a little better than if we booked through a tour operator somewhere else...Big mistake, our tour bus picked us up first and spent 2 hours in traffic picking up people at 7 different hotels!!! We even picked up some french backpackers at a hostel who told us they paid Y200 for their tour!
After being picked up at 9AM, we only got to the Wall at 12:30 and had only 2 hours on it!!! We felt immensely rushed but tried to make ourselves believe that we had to return early to avoid the traffic...We could not believe it when the tour guide broke the news that we were going to go to a Chinese Medicine center for 1 hour!!! So we left a Wonder of the World in a rush to go to a Medicine Center???? Thankfully the center was in town and we just got there, took a taxi and left...TERRIBLE TOUR! Do not book! We definitely expected more from the concierge at the hotel, Donald.
The service at the hotel was good...Not sure why other reviewers call it spectacular since it is average for a hotel of this category anywhere in the world.
I would only stay here if I had a prearranged tour or people picking me up and taking me around. Not good for an individual trip.

Dear ranger22miami,

Thank you very much for sharing with us your experience concerning your recent stay in our hotel. We appreciate your comments and we will take these items to heart in our effort to provide each and every guest of ours a truly delightful stay.
With regards to the directions to the hotel, we realize that not all taxis are familiar with our location and thus have provided a clear map with directions to the hotel in local language in our website. Our hotel is not in the Central Business District as we serve the needs of travelers who need to be in this part of town or appreciate the value proposition that the hotel provides.
We are sorry that the street noise can be heard in your room and that our Concierge has booked you a tour that is not to your liking. Please rest assured that we will speak to Donald about this issue and ask him to clarify exactly what the guest needs are and to explain what the tour package includes.
Thank you for mentioning that you found the service in the hotel to be good. Everyone’s expectations are different; but sufficed to say we are glad we had served you well.
Once again, thank you for staying at Doubletree by Hilton, Beijing and we hope that whenever your travels bring you to our part of the world again, you might consider writing to us so that we could show you what the real CARING culture of Doubletree is all about.

Yours truly,

Vlad Reyes
