“Great location, very nice facilities, superb staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2011

We spent 4 nights here (in 2 different rooms) and it really has been great. I chose the hotel because of the reviews on TripAdvisor and in large part because of the location. It is within walking distance of Drum Tower, the Forbidden City, Lama Temple and a lot of other great locations, if you don't mind a little walking. But the location is also great because you are in a very quiet hutong off of a very vibrant and interesting larger hutong (Nanluogo).

While the location was a major factor in my choice, and it has worked out well, I really needed to write this review because the service has been so excellent. The staff truly has a service attitude, most of them speak English well, and they just really want you to have a good stay. They have helped us navigate the area, providing written names and addresses and even a map. They also upgraded our room for free when there was a problem with our room (see below). Generally speaking they are just extremely cordial and accommodating.

But back to the rooms, they all are very nice. We were really trying to watch our budget, so we got their "cheap" room which had no windows and a twin bed. The room was clean and well-appointed, just a little small and very dark in the middle of the night! It also got very warm and since there were no windows to open, they opted to just put us in a deluxe room for our last night.

Some other comments on the facilites:
- breakfast was very nice with basic continental items as well as a few hot items. I thought the onion rings were really good - albeit unusual - for breakfast
- the courtyard setting is very quiet and peaceful
- the water pressure was adequate but not great
- the rooms are very nice but also simple, while having all the necessities and a few extras
- they have made great efforts to be "green" including using alternative energy for heat/hot water.

But back to the staff. They really made the experience. It was so nice to be taken care of and have such nice people making our vacation special.

A really great place to stay if you want more of an authentic experience while still being "comfortable".

We chose Courtyard 7 because we didn't want to stay in one of the big hotels and we wanted to be inside the Dongchen district with its narrow lanes and alleys. We went for one of the superior rooms looking out into a courtyard. It was all we had hoped for. Don't book this place if you want a sanitised Western hotel with no character, but do book it if you want a laid back stay with great hosts who take care of every need. The rooms are old and quaint and the whole place has a charm about it.

The Courtyard 7 Hotel is recommended for those who want a more authentic Chinese experience. It is a 20 room 300 year old Shiheyen(sp.) or courtyard home furnished with reproductions from the period - even a most comfortable canopied bed. Our standard rooms were at the back where the spinster daughters used to live! The rooms were very clean and the bathrooms surprisingly modern and tastefully appointed with good large showers and lots of hot water. Good western breakfasts and internet access in the cozy restaurant were included in the $60/night ( early Dec.). We met fellow guests at the computers in the restaurant and shared our awful but complimentary bottle of Chinese red wine. The hotel is conveniently situated in a hutong off Nan Luogu Xiang where we felt very safe wandering. It is very quiet but once out of the lane and on the street there are lots of shops, restaurants and bars. The only noise we heard was a loudspeaker at about 9 am and then children singing. It was from the school across the lane. The lakes are an easy walk and if you keep the Drum Tower in view you can't get too lost! We had time for one last long walk around the hutong to the lake on the morning of our departure to take in more of daily life in old Beijing. The friendly hotel staff posted mail for us and arranged our half hour taxi ride to the airport.

This hotel is one of a kind! Outstanding! I stayed here with my 27 year old daughter for 5 nights in the freezing winter. Every night it was an utter pleasure coming back to our warm room. The beds were comfortable and room spotlessly clean.

The hotel is just beautiful, tastefully decorated and restored to give it a historical feeling, but with every modern convenience. It was really great to see the environmental awareness demonstrated by the hotel in their use of solar energy and promotion of water conservation.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Communication was not a problem as their English is fantastic (our Chinese not so good!). They booked taxis, gave us ice when we had a knee accident and wrote instructions to help with our daily adventures.

This amazing hotel is quiet and secluded although set in a funky and buzzing area of town. There are beautiful restaurants, bars and shops 20 metres from your doorstep. Although you do need to venture out in the morning as a good buffet breakfast is included with excellent coffee.

I had been worried about travelling around this huge city in the freezing temperatures. The subway is what we ended up using the most as it was easy, so cheap and meant we had control of where we were going. Taxis usually OK but had one experience where he had no idea where we were going and just drove us around until we got out. The nearest subway is 15minutes walk, which is turned out to be OK in the end. We are keen walkers anyway.

If you are considering staying here, just go it! You won't regret it :)

As the vast vast majority of reviews on the website have eluded to, this is an excellent hotel. The staff are friendly, attentive, hardworking and speak good English, the hotel itself is very atmospheric and well cared for, the breakfast is generous and good, and the location is superb. The rooms are excellent with good facilities and modern bathrooms, and there is free internet access. I have stayed in a large number of hotels over the years and I personally don't think I've ever received such a good level of service anywhere. One morning we mentioned we were looking to book train tickets, the hotel staff rang up and told us they hadn't yet been released. When we returned to the hotel that evening the hotel had rung again and reserved some tickets for us, without us even requesting it. When we were leaving the staff carried our cases for over 100m to a taxi waiting for us.

A superb hotel, definitely the best I stayed in in China, perhaps the best I have stayed in worldwide. Highly recommended.

Recently, my Chinese friend & I spent several nights at Courtyard 7,
a restored, quadrangle in "The Lanes" near The Forbidden City. For those who love the tradition & cultural value of this area, I would highly recommend a stay in this charming, "old style" bed & breakfast. Although we did not eat at the restaurant, we did enjoy the morning breakfast complete w/ everything one could wish for regardless of Nationality. I would recommend staying in the "Special" or VIP" rooms, though my friend stayed in a "standard" room which although smaller was quite comfortable. When I return to Beijing, I will again stay here. The surroundings, atmosphere & historical feeling . .as well as service are special, and I would recommend to anyone interested in gaining a hands-on experience of the "old China".

Me and my boyfriend booked this hotel in August 2008 for the Bejing Olympics as he was a Athlete in the games and there were no reviews at the time so my travel agent did not want to book it for me but since it was a really good price compared to other hotels when the olympics were on i just said let's go for it, how bad can it be. When i arrived in Bejing the cab driver took about 2 and a half hrs trying to find this place as it was very unknown and very new. Once we got there @ about 3am the staff came out and helped us with our bags and we were pleastly surprised on how naturally beautiful it really was. Once i got into the room there were lots of bottled water, fruit and extra blankets if need be. The staff were amazing everyday making sure we had everything that we needed, the owner made us homemade dumplings one morning and i couldnt believe how DELISH they were, i asked for him to make it again and no...lol Too good to be true those dumplings!! Anyway if your looking for a wicked value for a hotel in Beijing and love to explore then this Hotel is your hotel!! Its in a great central spot so its easy to get anywhere and the street right beside this hotel as so many lil shops and stores, restaurants and tons of lil pubs which we very much enjoyed it all!!!!!!!!!!
