“Loft-like rooms, perfect service, great location”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

This is my 2nd visit to The Opposite House. If anything, it keeps getting better – if that is even possible. The huge open floor to ceiling interior space is the perfect setting for a display of contemporary Chinese art. The food in the café is superb by any standard. The bar and downstairs restaurant are relaxing and friendly. That said, there are three key qualities that set The Opposite House apart. 1. The Staff: from check-in, to the bar team at Mesh, to gracious and knowledgeable crew in the Café, to the thoughtful house cleaning staff. 2. The Location: The Hotel is located in a wonderful part of town, walking distance to great restaurants, clubs and shops – and a short taxi ride to art galleries and Beijing’s cultural institutions. 3. The Rooms: large, loft-like spaces of simple thoughtful design. Great interplay between white fabrics and light hue wood – and very little else complicating the elegantly spare aesthetic. Oh, and there is the luxuriously long dark pool – so inviting that I went out and bought a swimsuit just to experience it.

The Opposite House is a fanstastic hotel with excellent staff and a very warm atmosphere.
I would recommend this hotel to EVERYBODY who is thinking about visiting Beijing.
There is only one down side with this hotel, the lack of english knowledge. The staff are certanlty trying their best but its not always enough.

Splendid!

From the rooms in natural cool materials to the gym and the pool in the basement over one of the best restaurants in Beijing I simply love this place. Have stayed there more than five times in the past 24 months - each time with pleasure. Wonderful to recognized by the staff and welcomed back..... By the way the check in procedure is an experience on it's own.... A must try in Beijing.

A Green cube in the middle of the city, a wide hall, a lot of space. Wooden rooms, wide, very zen, wooden bathroom with bath tube and separate shower, large windows, great breakfast, nice gym, Beautiful pool, great service and mediterranean restaurant with a beautiful terrace. Well, great place! Maybe a little far away from Imperial Town but about 20 min from the AirPort closed to the 3rd ring road.

Loved this hotel.

The service is amazing. Casual but professional.
I was shown to my room, and all the gadgets and switches were explained.
The decor is simple, modern and the rooms are huge.
The breakfast is lovely, the amenities and free mini bar are a huge surprise.
To top it off, the end to my stay was even more amazing.

I went to pay with my corporate credit card, and unfortunately it had maxed out! ( sorry Boss!).
They didn't blink ane yelid.
Unlike most 'corporate' hotels chains, who would argue and fuss, the team at reception said 'no problem' - give us your email address and we will send you the bill"
Can I say, this made my day! In any other hotel, this would have been an awkward experience.

The Opposite House is amazing in it's own right, but the staff made it outstanding!

I will be back....soon!

Room Tip: I had a basic room, but even that was large, luxurious and quiet. Based on that, feel confident that...

This is a hotel I simply enjoy coming back to. Great location surrounded by restaurants, bars and shops of all sorts, yet quiet away from it all at the same time.

The lobby feels like a cathedral. I love that there's no official front desk; it's more the front lobby. The staff wear uniforms, so it's easy to know who's who. The uniforms are hip and casual, rather than stuffy and conventional, and say a lot about who will and won't like this hotel. One gets checked in sitting on a sofa, rather than standing in line. The staff are all friendly and helpful.

I stayed in a Studio Suite. I love the minimalist yet comfortable, warm feel of the room. Lots of natural light when needed can be blocked completely at the touch of a button. Cables and connections to turn my iPhone and laptop into a home entertainment center.

Not sure why the previous reviewer couldn't find the lights for the toilet. There is one. There's also a very minimal light for the bathroom, if you don't want to wake anyone else in the room with it. Anyhow, room service is great. So, any questions will be answered quickly and efficiently.

The free mini bar is a great bonus, makes this hotel feel generous. It's filled with Coke, Sprite, all sorts of beer, mineral waters, Swiss chocolate and Snickers. They re-fill it daily, too!

Breakfast is everything I could ask for in the cosy cafe they have overlooking the art of the central lobby and their terrace. There's a buffet with pastries, cereals, meats, cheeses, and fresh fruit along with an order from the cafe's normal breakfast menu. The breakfast runs until like noon. Perfect for me, who likes to sleep in.

The swimming pool is a work of art. I think the bottom is some kind of dark metal. Above, there are tiny, pale blue lights that look like stars hanging from a ceiling that goes up to the next floor. The water is a bit chloriney for my taste.

The gym is right next door.

Check-out is like 14:00 or something. Again, perfect for me.

This hotel tries to be stylish but most of this is a veneer on pedestrian architecture. Unfortunately the hotel's design is impractical:
--There's no front desk and staff have no uniforms. It was difficult to figure out where to check in, and the checkin itself was quite disorganized.
--The bathroom has no sound or light insulation from the rest of the room. There's no light inside the toilet. Forget about privacy, and if one of you needs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night you are going to have to turn on all the room lights and wake up your roommate.
--Sinks are designed with flat bottoms, which means that water flowing into the sink splashes everywhere, and also that the sinks drain poorly.
--Controls for lighting and AV equipment are difficult to use.

One great feature of the hotel is that it provides free bicycles to borrow--it was fun biking around the tree-lined streets of Sanlitun.

The free minibar at the hotel was also a nice touch. One tip: look in the minibar fridge for the excellent Swiss Lindt chocolate bar, hidden under the crappy American Snickers bar!

Breakfast at the hotel was nothing special. If you'd like an excellent and cheap Beijing breakfast al fresco, turn right when leaving the hotel, walk 100 meters down Sanlitun, and turn left on the first small street. (Sanlitun E. 2nd St). Pass the elementary school, and then bear right at the next intersection. There are outdoor stands selling soymilk, youtiao, and other breakfast items. This walk is on the way to the closest metro station (Tuanjiehu, line 10) if you're headed in that direction.

Speaking of the metro, this is really not a convenient hotel for mass transit. If you stay here as a tourist, you should plan on using a lot of taxis.

Given the high price of this hotel, I would not stay here again.
