“The best hotel to stay in Beijing”
Reviewed 14 April 2009

During my recent trip to Beijing I was recommended to stay at The Opposite House. Being familiar with so many of the five star hotels in the city, I was truly impressed with the service and the overall quality of The Opposite House. The staff members deliver truly excellent and personalized service. The hotel rooms are probably the largest in Beijing. The hotel has been so well and uniquely desigend that one does not want to go back to any other of the traditional five star hotels in the city. The rooms are very bright and designed in a very ultra chic yet subtle way. The in house restaurant facilities can easily compete with the best world class restaurants in London or New York. Everyone's favorite is SURENO which serves modern mediterranian food. However BEI is probably one the coolest and most refined Japanese restaurants in Asia. The pool and the gym are very comfortably designed, a real oasis of relaxation. Even though the hotel is so ueber-designed, the hotel feels very relaxed like a private residence and the service provided by the guest experience team (that is how they call the whole front of the house team) feels like one is surrounded by private butlers. With so many tacky, large hotels in Beijing, The Opposite House is a true gem. The location is very convenient in the embassy area right in the midst of the Sanlitun Village shopping area.
I would not stay anywhere else again.Thank you very much for a fantatis stay!!

The Opposite House's breathtaking, cutting-edge design by architect Kengo Kuma should not be missed on any trip to China's capital. Even if you for some reason can't stay at this hotel, you must grab a bite at one of its excellent restaurants or bars to catch a glimpse of one of Beijing's most beautiful interiors.

The rooms are perfect in every way. The wall-to-wall windows, unvarnished wood floors, white walls and huge, glass and wood baths bring minimal design to accessible perfection. The pristine high design is never cold; in fact, everything about the Opposite House is at once sublimely comfortable and inviting.

The Opposite House does so many things differently from other 5-star hotels and contemporary boutique hotels, but the impeccable staff and attention to detail ensures the experience is always user-friendly. There really is no place else like this in Beijing, and the experience of staying here is well worth the price.

The Opposite House is a 98 room boutique hotel located in the trendy San Li Tun district on Bar Street and part of the high end Villaqe Shopping Mall . Rooms are large and done in a very stylish minimalist decor with very comfortable beds . There are two excellent restaurants , a club and bar . The hotel feel is modern and the staff from top to bottom are young , friendly and attentive although informal.
My wife and I ate at the Asian Bei and Mediterranean Serrano restaurants both were really first class.
The hotel is expensive but we really enjoyed our stay .

if beijing is a city that boasts bigness you'd be surprised how this small boutique hotel does just that. at least that was our first impression when pulling open its heavy wooden doors and entering its soaring lobby area. this hotel is all about newness and super-bling interiors but surprisingly with a super-friendly, warm, and well-trained staff to match. we got two nights at one of the standard-sized rooms with a unique open and spacious layout likened to an urban studio apartment. it had tres-chic japanese-modern surfaces, but i especially liked the handy ipod speaker system, theatrical lighting scenes, and most importantly an incredibly comfortable bed. location is central to the more "western" area of the city with plenty of shopping, but it seemed that the hotel's bars and restaurants were also destinations themselves. brunch at the hotel's Cafe had a sorta California-freshness quality that kept it unusual to the typical American-style brunch. big service equals a big pricetag, but our stay was definitely one of those one-of-a-kind experiences.

I only spent one night here as a friend won a night's stay in a charity raffle and invited me along. Due to that, I can't really comment on value for money (I picked "3" almost at random) as I wouldn't pay the 2100y current special rate (I asked the hotel directly) to stay there, or anywhere for that matter. Also, getting my biases out of the way, I don't like the location as Sanlitun annoys me, and I wasn't in Beijing on business.

The hotel is very well built and they have some novel concepts such as the "we come to you" checkin/out procecure whereby you lounge around reception while a member of staff comes over to you with wireless gadgets.

The room is stunning. The bed and pillows so comfortable I wanted to waste an entire day of my trip just lazing around in my room. There's not too much in the minibar but it's all complimentary. Simple touches such as the coffee in your room being freshly ground for use in the provided cafetiere (french press), some tasty snacks, and a very good sound system, mean you can treat your room as a mini resort holiday.

The wooden bathtub was fantastic, as was the entire bathroom space.

We spent most of the evening, after dinner elsewhere, in the Punk bar. Drinks weren't expensive for sanlutun, and the music was fantastic - a great DJ. We got breakfast included and due to the low number of guests (China's low season, expensive hotel, financial crisis etc) it was all ordered from the menu, rather than from a buffet. It was American-themed so if you like the idea of a posh egg McMuffin, and cereals, and a stack of pancakes for breakfast (yumm!) then you'll be fine. I reckon they'd make up anything you want, actually, and you can order and eat until you explode.

Opposite House has to be "the" new hotel in BJ. It's been open a while but this place has got so much personality and style it is a breath of fresh air amongst other highend hotels in the old capital of the Eastern of Empire, a place full of stuffy, guilded, poorly designed and badly located hotels. Opposite House is better.

In my several trips to BJ I haven't had a lifestyle experience quite like this one. Modern, clean lined hotel, bright and colorful which is hard to achieve in BJ winters.

The place is all about the individual. They arranged for a hotel car, a tour of old neighborhoods that was led by the managing director of the cultural non-profit, who had previously worked on cultural preservation for National Georgraphic--not just some 50 cent bicycle tour (which can be fun too), and there was no check out time...I checked out at 4pm with no complaint from the hotel.

Breakfast was amazing, lots of choices. The bar tender in the upstair lounge made the best bourbon Old Fashion I've had in 3 years...perhaps if I subtract out sentimental factors...ever. Good drinks and the bamboo at breakfast had me feeling I was in a designer oasis.

The bed was nice and soft and while I had planned to have such a busy iternary in BJ, I slowed down to enjoy life a little, inspired by the hotel.

The place had great art installations as well, so if you can't afford to stay there, at least stop by for a drink or two. I appreciated that I didn't see one panda, water color, or rising dragon sculpture. Instead, you'll find a delicious monumental wall of drawers (stunning) and other modern yet relevant art. (swank bar on first floor and one downstairs with a beat).

The management staff are great too, two statuesque managers were on site all the time.

It was a worry free, delightful experience.

Thank OH, you deserve the review.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Opposite house, a truly amazing experience. The place doesn't really feel like a (conventional) hotel, but more like a modern metropolitan loft. Also, the mediterrean restaurant Sureno was excellent, lovely food and perfect service (with a very charming manager).
In short, the best hotel in Asia we ever visited!
