The moment I walked in the doors I was warmly greeted by the staff and by two beautiful dogs. (Blackie the old lady of the Hutong and Mika the rambunctious little puppy in training.) The room was spotless and the perfect size for me. The little extras in the room of water, shower gel, shampoo, fluffy towels and slippers were unexpected and made me feel even more welcome. The welcome tea was wonderful also. Sitting up on the terrace makes you feel a world away from the jam packed streets below. In fact this Hutong is incredibly peaceful and would make for a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Beijing or Shanghai if you live in either of those places as I do. (I was here to sight see though)
The location of this Hutong is perfect. I walked to Jingshan Park, the Forbidden Palace and the Bell and Drum tower are just minutes walk away as is Houhai Lake. The street it is located off is a hub for Chinese tourists to eat and shop. Lots of snacks, drinks and souvenirs on the street. Get up early and catch a taxi to Tiananmen Square for the flag raising it is worth it. Because you're so central it is easy to get a cab there early in the morning from this Hutong. Also get to the end of the street early enough to catch the lady selling the Chinese Crepes. She is so popular she is gone by 8am but for 5RMB you can't get a better breakfast for that walk to the Palace.
When I come back to Beijing I will definitely stay here again. In fact it is so central and the staff, dogs and rooms so perfect I wouldn't consider anywhere else.
