I know that Beijing in large, but this hotel was really far from everything. We were on a Gate 1 Tour and couldn't really choose our hotels. We wanted to go to Hard Rock Cafe to get T-shirt souvenirs and it took 45 minutes by cab to get there. I will say, though, that cabs are very cheap (about $7 to get there). The hotel is OK. The buffets were good. We did have a problem with our room though. It was so hot. We called for someone to come to fix it and perhaps put the AC on - the room was like a sauna. They fixed the thermostate, but told us no AC. We asked how to cool the room so we could sleep. The person opened and door (to the hallway) and propped it open with a waste basket. So, we had an audience for about an hour as people passed by the room until it cooled off enough so we could sleep. The next night, it was the same thing. I'm sure there are other hotels a little closer to the Forbidden City, etc., that are nice, too. This hotel caters to tour groups.

We stayed at this hotel while on tour in Beijing. I'd say the hotel compares to a Hilton in the states. The public areas of the hotel are clean and modern. For a westerner, the hotel carries with it a good balance of western and asian acoutrements (they have actual toilets and no holes in the floor).

For the value, the hotel was a prize. In Room Internet access (ethernet), and GREAT customer service (I called for service and they were there immediately) made this stay a plus for me.

The only negatives were the hard beds (which I adjusted to quickly) and the food selection (very cantonese, which really wasn't my thing).

We stayed at the Merchantel with a Gate1 travel tour. The hotel was very nice. Clean rooms, with hairdryer, coffee/tea maker, iron and ironing board, etc. Beds everywhere we stayed in China are very small and HARD, but I'm thinking unless you are at a Ritz Carlton that's how it is everywhere. Staff was so friendly and attentive, we enjoyed the lobby bar, and the service made it all the more special. The spa was very well priced as well. No pool though. This is by no means a 5 star hotel, but it was better that average and we would definitely return.

This hotel is fairly new (which is why cab drivers don't know where it is) and it may have been converted from a previous building to house tourists for the Olympics. There's not much around the hotel but the subway station is approximately a 10-15 minute walk away.

The rooms are standard - clean and impersonal. This is not a hotel that stands out in any way except that there is in-room complementary Internet. The front desk is very nice and helpful and will write out your destinations in Chinese so your cab driver can find where you want to go. However, the cab drivers don't know where this hotel is, so coming back was a hassle for everybody in our group. It took a lot of asking to find a cab driver who would even take me and then he had to stop at least 4 times and ask around. He was actually yelling in frustration by the time he finally found the place, LOL.

Breakfast buffet: quite good, with a fresh omelette station, salads, small fruit selection and a small assortment of breads.
Dinner buffet: I think this was about 120 RMB but there was a huge selection and the quality was very good. I especially like the Peking duck station and it beats running around the neighborhood trying to find something.
