We had a tremendous week in Beijing and this was enhanced greatly by the service and quality accommodation at Michael's house guesthouse. The rooms were comfortable and quiet, the breakfast very good, the overall ambience very relaxing and welcoming, but more than anything, the staff were wonderful. They were helpful, polite, friendly and very good at their job with advising and organising trips. They made our stay a delight. Location also superb in our opinion. 10 min walk from metro station (which works great) and also felt very safe walking back at night (in fact, felt safe in all Beijing). Highly recommend.

We are a couple in our 50s and we do not speak any Chinese at all. At every turn, the English proficiency of the staff was of great assistance to us, and we found Sophia to be especially helpful. The decor is wonderful and the accommodations comfortable, and the price is well worh it. If ever in Beijing again, we would not hesitate to stay at MH's.

The taxi driver from the airport could not find the hotel easily, but the staff was able to guide him when he called the hotel. Convenient to subway, and the neighborhood is fairly 'traditional' (for modern Beijing).

Simple but good breakfast, including fresh fruit.

Michael's house is a small courtyard hotel in the Hutong area of Beijing. Do not be put off by ally that leads to the hotel. Once you walk through the door you are in for a very pleasant surprise. The hotel lives up to its website photos and details and the staff are amazingly helpful and fiendly. Our only regret is that we only had one night in this lovely hotel and we hope to go back at some stage. we would recommend it to anyone. Breakfast in the hotel was buffet style but cooked fresh for us as we had to eat by 7.00.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny

We stayed 9 nights. The room was divided in a sleeping area and living room and very nicely decorated. The bathroom was small, but clean and contained a western toilet! The room had a safe, hair dryer and offered laundry service. The covererd courtyard is also an eye catcher and the place where breakfast is served. The breakfast offered a good selection for the european taste (toast, jam, scrambled eggs, bacon... and good coffee!)
But the main reason why we recommend this hotel, is the excellent service. All the desk clerks spoke english very well and were corteous to help you with any problems or questions.
The distance to the subway was appr. 10min, which is not much if you are staying for sightseeing you will walk much more on a daily basis anyway. The street where the hotel is located is a little bit murky, but we never felt unsafe going there...

We stayed 4 nights at Michael's house and it was totally great.
Great service provided by a kind and cool staff, the room is nice and cosy, and the inner courtyard the perfect place to relax after a long tough day in Beijing.

We really enjoyed our stay there and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and relaxing 'home' in Beijing.

We stayed here in a standard double room for two nights. The room was small but well equipped, with a large comfortable double bed. The bathroom was also small but clean and adequate. For a few nights this was fine, but if you plan to stay for a week or two, it may be better to book one of the larger rooms.
The hotel is a converted traditional hutong in which the rooms form a square facing inwards towards a courtyard which has been given a covered clear roof. This yard now forms the seating and breakfast area. Because the rooms are double-glazed, we had no trouble with noise from the public area, and in any case the people who choose to stay in such hotels are unlikely to be the mindless drunkards who upset others.
We came by subway and did have some trouble finding the hotel. It is located in a back street in a Chinese area. After our frustrating time finding it, as soon as we walked in we realised why it is rated so highly by travellers - it has real charm and the staff are excellent (they speak English). If you plan to walk from the subway (about 15 minutes walk), I would recommend enlarging and printing the map on the hotel website, including the address in Chinese characters. Get a taxi if you get lost - they are very cheap.
In our view, its rating in the top 5 hotels in Beijing is well justified, though it would benefit from clearer signposting in the streets. The hotel will not be to everyone's taste but it is a real gem and excellent value for money.

Some people may think it was a little out of the way but I don't think so for a city the size of Beijing - plus so cheap to get a taxi anywhere. It was in an area where there were not a lot of Europeans so you get a feel (I think) for the "real" China. It was a converted hutong which is a courtyard covered like a conservatory with double glazed windows and doors in the bedrooms which gave it strange but cool feeling. We stayed in the Emporer suite and as our kids were under 11 they stayed for free (one on the sofa which according to her was great.) The only weird thing was that we were only given three towels as it was a 3 person room - that was strange but... The recptionist were nice and gave us fantastic reccommendations for local restuarants - try the szechuan one just down the road (loved the salt and pepper prawns) on the right across the road or go left and try the wire sweet potaotes - sweet potatoes cooked in hot sugar and then dipped in cold water to make a crunchy mess!! They also posted our postcards and sorted out a large taxi to get us to the airport early in the morning. Breakfast was ok and they actually made us an early one before we went to the wall. They provide trips but we were already with a guide

Room Tip: Emperor's room has a fantastic massive bed!
