Very helpful staff! The hotel is quite hard to find initially, but the quality of stay makes up for that inconvenience. ALL staff members are generously accommodating, welcoming, and willing to assist. Many staff speak English quite well. It seems as if Michaels House is located about 5 blocks from the subway... So be prepared to walk if traveling by metro. The breakfast buffet is very good.

I have stayed there about 2days. The room is very clean and comfortable. The location is in a hutong. Very quiet. The people are so friendly to help us. The rooms are China style. And there is a big living room, we have good breakfast at there. After tired trip, the comfortable bed made us have a good sleep.
Beijing is a crowded city, but Michael.s House is a relaxed place. I will choose here again.

The hotel is very comfortable, people are friendly and extremely kind. The hotel is located in a characteristic street of Beijing. Metro is near, about 5 minutes walk.
Rooms cleaning and towels change are daily. You can partecipate to many trips (es. great wall, achrobatic shows etc.) masterfully organized by hotel.

One of us has lived in Beijing for a year and still visits professionally at least twice a year, practically always staying at Michael's House. This hotel appears to be the best value for money in town and an ideal place for those who dislike the anonymous American-style hotel room that one often encounters when travelling professionally.

The location is very nice, for those who appreciate it. It is as typical as Beijing hutongs can go: certainly not beautiful but full of life at all times (in one of our last trips we arrived around 5-6am and went out 100-200m from the hotel for a very typical breakfast on the roadside with locals starting their day of work: unmissable!). Beijing (and most of China) is quite safe for travellers and the hotel being in a small side road should not discourage anyone from experiencing the area. As for going around town, we always use bicycles, but the there is an underground station at 10-15 minutes and a shopping area just 5 minutes further (with an excellent supermarket).

The hotel itself is quite nice. One of its best aspects is that it is quite small: just a courtyard house with probably less than a dozen rooms. Some are quite small, others offer a quite comfortable space. We have stayed in a few rooms, over time, usually preferring the smaller ones for a lower price, if available, but claustrophobic guests may prefer to go for the fancier ones (except that when one is in Beijing, one may not stay in the room for much else than sleeping). The courtyard is covered and is in fact a common space for the guests and the place where breakfast is served. The covered courtyard distinguishes this from other similar hotels we have seen in Beijing: it may look less splendid in a spring sunny day than some other photos one may see on the web, but then it is truly cosy in all seasons. Rooms are uniformly clean (never had a problem over probably more than a dozen of stays) and quiet (no traffic anywhere close to the hotel. The room decoration is simple but not trivial.

And, last but not least, we see it repeated in almost all reviews: the staff is extremely nice and does everything to try to make one's stay the most enjoyable. They are all just happy to help, especially if one's Chinese in not great: over time they have helped us to find bike repair shops open in the middle of the night or find a place to leave a bicycle between visits. One just feels welcome and among friends.

We just did check prices again through TripAdvisor and it seems clear that one can hardly get better value in Beijing.

This hotel is simply great. We stayed here in total 5 nights. It's a very clean hotel with nice rooms. The staff is also really friendly. You can easily book tours from Michael's House. There is a subway nearby (Jishuitan), so you can reach every attraction. When you're staying in Beijing: stay here! You won't regret it.

The place is a little challenge to find for most taxi drivers, so bring an adequate Chinese description and map with you. Michaels house is actually conveniently located on a 10 mins walk to metro line 2. which loops around the center.
The courtyard is nice and quiet, rooms are clean. air-conditioned and spacious enough for an extra bed if needed. Definitely value for money.
Breakfast is simple and after a few days the need arises for a change of menu.
Staff is extremely helpful and can arrange tours to The Great Wall, tickets to the circus, taxi's. (thanks little). etc.

We just had a three-days trip in Beijing, but the trip gave me a short unforgettable memories.
I think it is hard to find the hotel which is such quiet in the busy city, but Michael's House is.Hutong around the hotel unique area is quiet where you can experience the local way of living. I enjoyed the time when stayed in Michael's House. The decoration is very nice, the room is elegant and clean.Especially the staff, they try their best to help us.For example, arranged the tour, recommended the restaurant and so on.They provide excellent service and hospitality. Here also like a family, let me have the feeling of home.
I hope I can stay next time!
