Location excellent. Friendly, clean and warm during a few frosty Beijing nights.
Great advice from staff and Bobby took us on an excellent day tour - amazing amount of iseful information and great insight into life.

This is one place that I stayed in my travels that I actually missed after I left.

We reached the hutong at about 8pm after a horrendous taxi ride (we found out that this is typical of a Beijing taxi ride ...). Once we reached there, the boss (Bobby) and his wife (Jojo) immediately asked if we had dinner and invited us for dinner with their family with 12 bottles of beer. The hospitality was so warm that we felt uneasy!

The service was fantastic. Bobby and Jojo were always there for our needs. If Bobby is free, he will be able to bring you to the wild part of the Great Wall. Furthermore, he will be able to "review" your Beijing travel plans and make useful suggestions. The courtyard is charming with roof access sheltered by a beautiful chinese red date tree. The snow (1st Nov 2009) made the place even more beautiful and charming. If you have the time, take a stroll through the Hutong while making your way to the nearest train station (Fuchengmen). You will be able to see old Beijing life and also taste local dishes.

The location is fantastic as it is very near to Xidan shopping district. However since there are many Hutongs in Beijing, taxi drivers often do need very specific directions to find the Hutong. So get Bobby or Jojo to write the directions and address onto a piece of paper and show it to the taxi drivers.

Do not expect good toilets though. The flushing is challenging as expected from structures that are constructed since the Qing Dynasty (they do not really consider flushing that time...). Other than that, the facilities are good.

This place is also not pricey.

I would recommend this to any intrepid travelers who want to experience old Beijing. This place is friendly, has good service, good location, not overly priced and most importantly unpretentious This is a must stay.

We stayed 3 nights at the Templeside Guesthouse. The location is great, since most sights are in walking distance or easily connected by Metro. The house itself is an authentic Beiing Hutong and nicely decorated to host foreigner. The service however is somewhat awkward and not the kind you can usually get in China. When we were there three girls hosted us, two actually working and shuffling around, one watching TV/surfing the web, speaking English and looking rather bordered. With the coming of the winter the rooms were indeed authentic. The place must be terrific in summer, when you can enjoy the patio and do not mind the simple windows and heating. All in all service could be better and best go in the summer.

Had a really hard time initially find our Hostel, but once we got there it was sunshine and smiles all the way. The hostel is basic with shared bathroom and toilets but has all the extras you need such as free wifi, Laundry facilities, no insect infestation and great staff. The staff was so lovely they totally looked after us booking tours, train tickets and giving great advice about Beijing. We saw found a totally different side to Beijing such as great local restaurants and markets which we couldn't of done without the help of the hostel staff who assisted us with our every problem. Although the hostel was initially hard to find, it was actually only a short walk away from the metro, buses and shopping malls. If you want to feel loved and looked after then definitely check out this hostel.

It is a very contradictory place. In one hand the staff (who else than JoJo) is excellent. They work their souls out, very friendly and kind (invite you to dinner, try to help you arranging whatever you need etc.), even despite the excessive load and stress they have. Hard to find stuff like this anywhere else.

In the other hand the place is quite run down, many of the things are broken or very worn out (doors, toilet, aircon) and don't expect any heat in the rooms before central heating season starts. We had heavy minuses and snow, still there was no way to heat the rooms (the aircon's attempt to do so just made few extra degrees compared to the outside). This is uncomfortable not only for the guests, but also for the staff (spending 24 hours fully dressed in warm clothes, also indoors). Additional bad things are the virtually non-working Wifi connection (it is OK only in the lobby) and the general lack of care (no maps, not enough hot water etc.) maybe from the owner's side.
It is located about 5 km to the west from the forbidden city, which is not the best, as most of the attractions are in the other 3 directions. Metro can mend this to a certain extent.

Below I say "not recommended", but if you don't mind those bad things, you might enjoy yourself a lot.

We spent four nights here on October, and really enjoyed it. If you don't speak Chinese, you may want to print the map of the hostel location, with Chinese street names, in order to find the hostel the first time. It can be hard to find people to point you in the right direction if you don't have the address in Chinese.

The room was small and cozy, and we enjoyed being in a hutong with the local shops. The drainage in the shower doesn't work so well, and the toilet doesn't always flush well, but they still worked, and there was hot water. The wi fi works, but it was a weak signal from our room. If you book a tour with the hostel, make sure you double check what you are signing up for. We thought we were booking a private car to the great wall, and ended up on a tour bus to the great wall, ming tombs, and a jade and silk factory. Not a bad tour, but just not what we thought we were booking. About a 15-20 minute walk to the metro. Good value for the money. The staff are very friendly and inviting.

i have stayed here once, but i found out about this place by another guesthouse in the area, and i must say this place is much better and much cheaper, the people are so friendly i was very upset to leave them, they almost became family to me! i would advise this to any traveller because once you meet the people you will want to go back every time you even think about beijing! and taxi drivers actually know where this guest house is! oh and if you are up to the challenge of drinking with bing every night! good luck
