“Basic and clean but key deposit is a rip-off.”
Reviewed 19 October 2010

A friend and I stayed here for a week and each had our own room. His was a good size but mine was very small and had no window. I didn't mind not having a window as It meant the room was very quiet. Basic and clean rooms with very hard beds.. The hotel staff's english is very limited and the day front desk guy would just ignore you if he didn't understand what you were asking. Hallways and lobby were very dark. Breakfast was 18 yuan and not very good. Don't use any room toiletries as they charge for everything. At check-in they require a 100 yuan key deposit. and they issue you a hand written paper receipt. My friend returned his key but they refused to return his 100 yuan deposit as he couldn't find his receipt. Total rip-off. I guess thats how they make extra money. Wouldn't stay here again because of this unethical practice.

Tucked away in the hutongs of the Dong Cheng district, it seems at first a bit out of the way -- which just adds to the experience. It's but a short walk to E. Bell Tower St. (Gulou Dongdajie) and Nanluogo Xiang, and within easy walking distance to most other Dong Cheng area sights.
The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. The rooms are clean, well kept, and pleasant. Our room faced across the alley from a small neighborhood center where locals came for Mah Jong nights -- a bit noisy, but it quieted down after 10:00 p.m., and just added to the sense of hutong life. About 50 yards down, early in the morning, young families dropped off their children at the day care center fronting onto the alleyway. Halfway to E. Bell Tower down the other access hutong (Xiaojingchang) is an elementary school where parents drop off their children in the mornings, and where the community held a couple night time events. Along the access hutongs, retirees sit in the sun and chat with their neighbors, while other residents visit in twos and threes during the day and into the evening. Staying at the Beijing Hutong Inn enables a real sense of the daily lives, and the comings and goings of the people living in the hutongs.
In all a really pleasant stay.
We really enjoyed the experience and will stay there again when in Beijing.
Helpful Hint:
Head for E. Bell Tower (Gulou Dongdajie) and Nanluogo Alley for initial orientation to good restaurants and shopping. Then branch out to the other sights of the city

My boyfriend and I plus 3 other friends (another couple and 1 single) booked accommodation at this Inn. We booked in total 3 double "City View Rooms" which had pictures of such rooms on a number of internet sites. These rooms cost more than the "standard rooms", which looked pretty drab.

None of us got the rooms we paid for. We all got the standard rooms and when taken to the rooms, I stated that this was not the rooms we had paid for. It turns out that they had given the rooms to others - so booking ahead does not secure your room (even where the hotel has confirmed your booking). They were not even going to tell us, or refund the difference and were very unhelpful. After much discussion with the supposeded manager, he agreed that he would move us all the next night. He was not prepared to refund the difference for the first night. He then threw in brekky instead - which is not good - there are much better places in the alleys.

The city view rooms (when we evenutally moved into the room) are nice. Careful with the bathrooms as our toilet kept flooding. The staff spoke very limited english and were very unhelpful.

The location of the Inn, can't be beaten! It is fantastic and I think location is the only thing it has going for it.

Watch out for the tours run by the hotel, as they are just shopping trips with very limited time at the great wall (unless you do the 6km trek). They didn't bother to tell us that the Ming tombs were closed (apparently), as I guess this meant more time for shopping. A whole day tour and we only spent 1.5 hours of that at the Great Wall.

I am only recommending this hotel because of the location and if you get the room you paid for then you shouldn't have an issue except with some of the staff.

I normally stay at more up market chain hotels for business, but my wife and I decided to try out the BeiJing Hutong Culture Inn & Hostel for the experience of being in "The Hutongs". We were not disapointed. The area and the atmosphere was great and we felt like we were in the real Beijing. THe hotel room was clean, comfortable and great value for money and only slight downside was no window in our ground floor room. The staff were friendll and very helpful and we had a great stay. We would definitely stay there again if we go back to Beijing.

The hotel was hard to find--it is located in a traditional hutong area, so it is down a small alleyway. Watch for signs and I suggest getting the address written in Chinese and having the phone number for the taxi driver. When I first entered, I was a bit taken back by the poorly lit lobby and hallways. Once I reached the room I was pleasantly surprised. The room was small, but quite comfortable for one person. The bathroom/shower area were sufficient and quite clean. The room was cleaned daily. The front desk personnel spoke at least basic English and were friendly and helpful. The hutong area itself contained many shops and restaurants and the two main streets near the hotel also had many good restaurants.

Good location and good staff. Close to the action but far enough away to have a quiet night in the Hutong. Internet in every room - some have wifi but all have eithernet. Good value.

Great location, good value for money, friendly staff (even to the point of directing taxi driver to the hotel from the railway station).
We stayed 5 nights used bus (5 minute walk to stop) and subway (10 minute walk to staion) to get round as this was the most convienient way to get round. The hotel even offered a free pedicab sevice to either bus stop or tube station.
Hotel offers tours to all the major sights including the Great Wall but get all the details before you book.
