“Nice hotel, awful service and staff behaviour”
Reviewed 9 December 2012

The facilities were quite alright. For someone visiting the University it is very convenient and it is also pretty much very well situated with regard to access to transport. I had no trouble with A/C and the room was very clean. They also provide a rich buffet breakfast.
My major issue was that, in spite of the fact that I had confirmed 3 times(!!!), my booking was nowhere registered because of the fact that the staff has a hard time communicating with non-Chinese customers -they barely speak any English- and they seem to be ill-trained. No skills, no efficiency or interest in helping customers... Although asked for assistance (!) they sit back and watch in a very "stoic" way helpless and angry customers who try to figure out how they will get a taxi to the airport in the middle of the night or how they will reach to the Great Wall. Oh! Forget about Wi-Fi ...

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side of the hotel have a better view although I am not sure about the noise as the...

I stayed in this hotel 25 days as the guest of Beijing Normal University, where I was working. This is probably the longest time I have stayed in a hotel, and I found it relaxing, pleasant and even enjoyable. The hotel is on the top five floors of a building that has several other functions, including being the centre for academic exchanges. On days when you can see through the Beijing murk, the views are good, and you may even be able to see the mountains (I did once). The critical things are fine: housekeeping, free internet (via Ethernet in your room, and wi-fi in the lobby), shower pressure. I was in a suite which was spacious, but so are the regular rooms, and they come provided with robes, slippers and a minibar. The laundry service is efficient and immaculate. One day I left quite a bit of money in the trousers sent to the laundry, and I found it returned on my desk that morning, and the trousers clean and pressed in the evening. The ground floor restaurant provides edible food, but almost undrinkable coffee (true of so many hotels. I wonder why). Free beer with lunch and dinner. They also make their own dark beer, good, but amazingly expensive for Beijing at 45 yuan (= £4.50). The bar is in the lobby, which makes it convenient for meeting people, but it is soulless, not somewhere you’d want to go for a drink. The front desk is helpful and well-staffed, and there is usually someone who speaks English.

As RoberttheRed noted, it is about 1km from the Line 2 on the tube, but one can catch a bus to it easily. Note that bus fares are 1 yuan (=10p) and tube fares are 2 yuan (=20p) for any distance, and if you buy a card, very convenient, the bus fare is 0.4 yuan. You should allow about 30 minutes to get to Tianamen square and about the same to get to Qianmen by public transport. Taxis, also cheap, can be quicker or much slower, depending on traffic.

There are a couple of decent restaurants nearby – Yumadun and Ishii (Japanese), and decent coffee opposite the South gate of BNU at the curiously-named Sculpting in Time. There are supermarkets on campus and nearby.

I believe you can't even book this hotel unless someone from BNU does it for you. I stayed there in June 2012 during a weeklong visit to BNU (hotel was paid for by my host). The rooms are OK, with free wired Ethernet (no WiFi), and I didn't experience the smell problem some other reviewer noted, and my AC worked fine. The workmanship is a little shoddy in places. The breakfast buffet is mostly Chinese-style (although I heard that Chinese guests didn't think much of it), and I ended up eating mostly eggs and fruit for breakfast every day. The front desk staff doesn't speak much English, except for one lady that I saw -- if you have a request and have trouble communicating, a Chinese guest (probably an academic who speaks English) might be able to help you out. The closest subway stop is a little over 1 km south, so you probably get around by taxi. Overall, this is a fine place to stay if visiting BNU, but otherwise is just OK for foreigners.

This is the hotel of Beijing Normal University used for visiting academics and as such I did not have to pay for my stay myself. The room was large but rather shabby and old fashioned. The drains smelt awful and no amount of airing the room fixed this. The room was very stuffy and we could not get air con to work. There is free internet and I had a room where the bed was in a separate space from the desk and three chairs. No drawers at all and limited hanging space. There is a kettle but a charge for using the sachets of nescafe. The website and hotel guide in the room indicate there is a large swimming pool and I was looking forward to a relaxing swim after work but couldn't find the pool. When I asked I was told it had been turned into a restaurant!
Breakfast was included and there was a large choice but labels were only in Chinese so it was often hard to know what the choices were - dumplings seemd to be all dough and no filling. I had enjoyed CHinese breakfast in another hotel but ended up sticking with toast here. The coffee came with milk and sugar which did not suit my need for expresso in the morning. On the occasions when I had lunch and dinner here the options seemed to be much the same as at breakfast.
On check in I had to pay a 400 yuan deposit by card and I am still awaiting the return of this as I was told the card machine wasn't working on check out.

This hotel is called Jingshi Hotel and it's in the Jingshi Building on the campus of Beijing Normal University. But it's not the same as the other Jingshi Hotel listed on tripadvisor.com.

Anyway, this is the best hotel on the campus of Beijing Normal University, so if you're being put up here, it's fine. The room is reasonably clean; there is free internet in the room; and although misfires do happen, they're tolerable. (For example, there was a drainage problem throughout my stay, so when I drained the tub after taking a bath, the emergency drain in the floor just started spewing bath water all over the floor--and one time my toilet backed up, a situation that, judging from the chambermaid's reaction, happens frequently.) But there are so many better hotels in Beijing that if you're looking for a room on your own, there's no reason to stay here.

There are two restaurants and both are mediocre. One is a buffet on the eighth floor, the other a so-called Cantonese restaurant (actually there's nothing Cantonese about it) on the second floor.

They charge an extra fee to use the swimming pool.
