Inner City is a simple and small Chinese hostel in a hutong in west central Beijing. My room was small and cluttered, with a tiny bathroom (a large shower with a built in WC and basin would be the best description) and a slightly uncomfortable bed and hygiene and cleanliness are definitely below Western standards.
It is relatively cheap and a sort of breakfast is included (toast and soy milk) but it is a perfect place to experience traditional Beijing life - it is in a hutong and there is an interesting and cheap market just across the alley.
The real strength of the place is staff (they own and manage the place) - welcoming, friendly, super helpful. We spent two very pleasant evenings socializing in the courtyard while having tea and fruits and we had good restaurant recommendations and suggestions for sightseeing.
I would recommend this if you are adaptable, traveling on a tight budget and staying for 3/4 nights. For shorter stays you might want something more convenient in terms of location and for longer stays you might want something more comfortable

i stayed there for about one week with my friend during March. We lived in a 4-bed room first and then moved to a two-bed room two days later.

The location is good, it's in a very central place, close to lots of tourism spots; The environment is good too, a very typical Chinese old Siheyuan, peaceful at night and easy to find some Chinese snack restaurant nearby; The price is reasonable too.

The only weakness is the breakfast. It's kinda disappointing, no coffee, no juice, no toaster, only some bread and a bottle of tap water.

Advantage
Very friendly and helpful staff, try their best to meet your needs. Room and sheets are fairly clean, bed is comfortable. The hostel is very traditional Beijing 'Siheyuan', anyone who wants to experience this home-like old Beijing style could try this out.

Disadvantage
Location is like 10mins walking distance to the metro station which doesnt seem an advantage to me, and RMB150 from airport to it by taxi at midnight. My room was #101, the bath is really tiny and has a bit of smell, I got up in the middle of the night to close the door of it to get rid of the smell, shower was fine though. It could get noicy in the morning when everyone else is up, and start walking and talking in the yard.

Room Tip: Room 101 has a twin bed and a single bed

Firstly, there are some really idiotic 'terrible' ratings for this place. If you do some research before your trip then you'll be a lot less disappointed by your own over estimations. Secondly, if you want hotel standards then book a hotel.
Anyway:
My girlfriend and I stayed at Inner city for 2 weeks over Chinese New Year 2013 and were made to feel at home straight away. We got sliced fresh dragon fruit one day and even got invited to their dumpling party for the actual eve which was brilliant.

We had a little bit of confusion with finding the place but once we were there everything else was fine. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in a hostel in Beijing, particularly if you want to see the real side of life in the area. 15 min walk from subway.

We stayed in innercity for four nights, then we left lots of our luggage with Sammy (she had no problem with us doing this and we felt very safe leaving our stuff in the hostel) for one night when we went to stay by the wall, then we came back for one more night before flying to Xi'an. The help provided from Sammy with booking other hotels, looking for places to eat, calling taxis etc was simply above and beyond what you would expect in any hotel, and here you are paying such cheap prices and getting all this personal service included for nothing!! She really left a lasting impression on us.

Staying in this hostel means you really get a chance to see a part of real Beijing life, staying in a real hutong you can watch all the locals leading their everyday lives and there is a fantastic market directly opposite the hostel where you can buy fruit, veg, warm breakfast treats, as well as buy some good warm thermals and hats and gloves that we certainly needed when we arrived in minus degrees!! And it is all so cheap (a pair of thermal trousers like none I have ever seen cost only 30yuan and kept the cold out better than my fancy thermals bought in New Zealand!)

My brother and I stayed in one of the dorm rooms, it was small but it only had four beds so it was never too busy and was kept warm at all times with a locker provided for everyone and lots of electrical sockets available. The wifi connection here is brilliant I used Skype a lot and never lost connection, better connection than anywhere else I've stayed so far.

We were sad to find the main communal area and kitchen were closed because of the cold weather as we had seen a lot of pictures of these areas and it looked so nice to relax in but there was still a cosy little reception area with sofas and a tv that you could use.

The location perhaps isn't as close as you could get to a lot of the main attractions, but there are so many options of public transport that are all easily available in the area and Sammy gave us a handy little sheet that explained to us the number busses/tube lines we could use to get to the main sights.

All in all, any inconveniences of the hostel are overridden by the service you get here.

Inner city hotel was great place to stay after our amazing trip around Beijing city. Hotel was simple designed: room, bathroom facilities and restaurant but we got the things we paid, it was reallt worthy if you would choose a cheap hotel in Beijing city.

If you want to stay in an authentic Chinese alley, then this is the place for you. And by 'authentic', I mean it's cheap, the people are really friendly, the rooms are sparse, the beds uncomfortable, and there's nothing really much of interest nearby.

The staff are by far the best thing about Inner City, and are always on hand to help with quite good English (for China). We also arranged a Great Wall trip through them, which wasn't too bad value for money. However, it is a good 20 minutes walk to the nearest metro, and there is NOTHING in the surrounding area to do if you don't feel like venturing too far out. The rooms are nothing to write home about (unless it's 'Dear Mum, I basically slept on wooden boards last night') and the tiny toilet/shower combo room was weird and unusable.

All that said, this is as Chinese as you can get, and if you're going to travel all the way to China, you might as well do things properly :)
