Happy Dragon Hostel
Ranked #132 of 6,556 Hotels in Beijing
Reviewed 14 August 2014

Located in a Hutong a stone throw from the Dongsi subway station this hostel offers clean comfortable rooms. With out a doubt the best thing about happy dragon besides the central location is the staff.
While the English skills vary from person to person, the staff shared one thing in common; a friendly and very helpful demeanour.
They helped us on not only with advice about Beijing but also purchasing train tickets.
Also, they were the only hostel of the many we stayed at in our 1 month trip,
that actually held a free dumpling party. Many other hostels in China would advertise with such events but never actually held them. The dumplings were by the way yummi.
The minuses:
The Wi-Fi was painfully slow, and would sometimes not work at all. But this also happened at other hostels.
Breakfast was subpar when it comes to western food. Somebody really needs to teach the cook how to make Bacon!
There is a market outside every morning, which makes taxi booking a stressful challenge.

Nice hostel, clean, good facilities, located 3 minutes walk from a supermarket and 4 minutes from a tube station, allowing you to get anywhere in the city until midnight. The bar area does get a bit crowded and the music volume is high throughout the day, would be nice to have a more quiet area. Staff were very helpful and accommodating except for giving us totally wrong directions, which caused us an hour of extra walking

I stayed here for about 8 days during my trip in Beijing. The staff are all very helpful and speak English decently. If you have a question about a trip or transportation, they are quick to help.

I stayed in a 5-bed room, which was relatively clean. One note to consider is that many bathrooms in China do not have a separate shower stall, so after a shower much of the bathroom will be wet. Just something to think about when booking a multi-bed room, if that concerns you.

The hostel itself is in a great central location. The closest subway stop (called Dongsi) is about a 7-10 minute walk, and it is close to the main attractions (the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, etc).

Overall, it was a good hostel that served my needs. At 70RMB per night, it was a value that I could not miss.

Will probably return again if I come back to Beijing.

- Friendly and very helpful staff - David, Jack, Carl & Sally. Without David’s help, we wouldn’t be able to book our train ride to Tianjin. He was very patient and accommodating.
- Staff speak good English; they would even write in Chinese the places where we want to go so no hassle at all
- 10 mins. walk from Dongsi Subway Station Line 6 Exit E
- Has luggage storage and weighing scale
- Room is spacious with good heater; provides towel, shampoo, liquid soap & rubber slippers
- Market very near the hostel and store where you can buy drinks, fruits, etc.
- Small eatery beside the hostel where you can have breakfast
- Within the vicinity are several good small and cheap restaurants and streetfood
- Only downside, hard bed! But this one is tolerable compared to everything Happy Dragon has to offer.
Would very much like to come back and recommend to friends!

Room Tip: Rooms in the lower floors has good wifi

My mom, sister and I stayed here on our recent trip to Beijing. We had arranged for transport from the airport to here upon arrival, so we had no problem getting there and then once we knew where we were, we never had trouble finding it again. We felt if we ever got lost anywhere in Beijing, all we had to do was find a subway station and we could get back. Being close to the Subway made it so easy to get around the city. We didn't take a single taxi the whole time we were there. The staff at the front desk was SO helpful and friendly. They took phone messages for us from our guide and greeted us with smiles the nights we were checking in and checking out in the middle of the night. We met lots of great people in our dorm rooms as well as in the little bar where we enjoyed a few delicious smoothies after a hot day. We LOVED waking up to a huge market right outside the front door every morning where we usually found something delicious to eat for breakfast, and there were lots of great tiny little restaurants close by that were cheap and delicious. It was reasonable walking distance to SO MUCH great shopping, including the evening market, which was so fun. The rooms were clean, we found the beds quite hard, but found that to be pretty consistent everywhere in China. They had maps, computers, and umbrellas, all of which we took advantage of! We were glad we stumbled on this little hostel and would definitely stay there again if ever traveling back to Beijing!

Room Tip: The dorm rooms are cheaper and unless they were very busy, you usually have these to yourself anyway...

I really hated Beijing....I have never seen a city show such contempt for tourists. But people at this place are the exception. Very friendly, and well, cute. they didn't bat an eyelid when I woke them up at 3am in the morning to go for my runs. I was very close to the bar, so it got a bit noisy, but that closed around midnight.
near to the metro, and on the door for this cool market.
It's a hostel, so obviously basic, but clean and does the job.
After my experiences, I'm never stepping foot inside China again, but if you are, then this is a tidy little place where they don't treat you like one great big dollar sign. Which is what China does to tourists. Hate Beijing.
