“Bad for what the hotel claims.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

For the bang of the buck, this hotel is a disappointment for its claim as a boutique hotel. This is one of those hotels that will "awe"you for their deceptive photography skills that they exhibit in their website. We booked for three nights, right after arriving we realized the service was below par due to the mismanagement of our luggage and the hotel is understaffed. Within 15 minutes of our stay, we discovered that the establishment is not as cozy as we hoped it should be so we seriously considered transferring to another hotel.we were so disappointed that we transferred right away and we were willing to pay 2 nights stay just to leave. This hotel should be great for travellers that are interested in staying in an imperial courtyard design for its sake.that is all the worth there is.

We wanted a hutong hotel experience in Beijing rather than a western business hotel. The DuGe courtyard disappointed in significant ways. While the location in the hutong was charming, the hotel itself was unsatisfactory. The room was tiny--seriously tiny. There was no spot for our two small suitcases except to use all of the floor space. There was noplace to sit in the room except the bed and the only way the bed fit into the room was sideways, such that the person adjacent to the wall had to climb over the other person to get into or out of the bed. There was a desk and desk chair but insufficient room to actually sit at the chair to use the desk. More importantly, most of the staff spoke little English and had attitudes that ranged from unfriendly to surly. One morning, our wake up call came almost one hour late. Breakfast service was excruciatingly slow, largely because each item was served separately--coffee, then the milk for the coffee, then the juice, then the toast, then the butter, then the jam, then the egg, then the bacon. Pick a different small hotel in hopes of a better experience.

Room Tip: Pick a different hotel to get a decent room.

I stayed for the second time beeing on a business trip.
I felt in love with that hidden place in this typical chineese style.

This time I have choosen the Bamboo room, which war large (2 rooms) and comfortable.

To spend the evening sitting in the courtyard is an experience by itself.
The Cigar room provides some french wined along with the chance to smoke a cigar.
Breakfast was excellent with a bit of a french touch.

Because I stayed 5 nights I was given a bottle of french wine after checking in.

One day I was asking for a Puh Erh tea in the afternoon and I was given a 30 min lession about how to prepare and drink this culturefull great tea.

The area is great for shopping, dining and drinking.

Free WIFI made my stay even for my business reason comfortable.

I definitely will come back, trying the other rooms left I haven't seen so far.

We checked in late at 9pm and got a room (Golden Lotus) where the air conditioning was broken. The staff didn't believe until we left it running for 2 hours and I was still suffocating, it was 35 degrees outside. We switched to the White Room which had poor soundproofing and many stains on the furniture cushions. The worst part was they had some lame excuse about why the "Internet Licensing" was unable to be obtained by said hotel and there was NO access to broadband nor wireless. I had work to catch up on and had to venture out into the city to look for a coffee shop with free Wifi. Very disappointing for the price point. The next day I asked if they could help us get a cab as we were switching hotels (thank god!) and the staff said "We can help you call a cab but we are not sure it will come." WHAT? The only redeeming factor was the breakfast was very good for Beijing standards-- both Western and Chinese additions.
I would never stay here again. It is not the standard it advertises.

Room Tip: Make sure the air conditioning works, we had a broken one.

I read the reviews about the hotel options in Beijing and was enchanted by the prospect of staying in a traditional hutong. The highly recommended ones were all booked, so I looked this one up - it sounded decent. Unfortunately, it was a great disappointment. First of all, as we were arriving to Beijing on a late night flight, we asked the hotel to arrange a taxi pick-up for us. They did and quoted us 300 RMB. Since it was our only option, we agreed. Upon arrival to the hotel, we were told we needed to pay 345 RMB because the hotel also charged the service fee, which was never mentioned to us before. Overall, our trip to the hotel from the airport cost us $55, which is very high in Beijing where you can get to the airport for $15. Neither the taxi driver nor the receptionist would help us with our luggage either - there is a high step at the entrance (as in most old Chinese homes), and the receptionist was sitting down watching us as we lifted the suitcases to get in. After we settled the bill (the receptionist would not check us in until we paid that charge), we noticed how badly kept was the small lobby. The light-colored carpet was unclean/not vacuumed for a long time, and I started having a bad feeling about the room. The room turned out to be very small - much smaller than the picture makes you believe. I am Ok with small rooms, but I was traveling with a friend and there was no room for both of us to even open our two small suitcases. If we opened both, we would not be able to move around and would block doors. The bed was also unfit for two people - it was placed against the wall, so one of us sleeping by the wall had to climb over the other one to get to her spot. I wish the hotel mentioned that it was really a single room - the bed took about 80% of its space. The room also has not been kept very well - the chandeliers on the wall had parts broken off and the whole room had an atmosphere of disrepair and neglect. This would be fine if I were not paying $180/night. The bed was also very hard - both of us woke up with back pain. The breakfast was lavish - lots of dishes, great service and tasty food. The little breakfast place was odd though with fluorescent green, black and purple walls and furniture and transparent plastic chandeliers - did not make me feel the hutong atmosphere at all.

Although we booked 3 nights, we moved out after the first night. While I looked forward to a hutong experience, I do not believe this hotel provides that. The staff was nice and let us refund the two nights even though we booked through Agoda.com.

We stayed at the DuGe Courtyard Hotel in late April/early May for 6 nights. We didn't want a big western-style hotel, but preferred to stay in a more traditional courtyard hotel but with all mod cons. This hotel certainly fit the bill. Our room, the Golden Lotus, was lovely, albeit a bit small. It was very comfortable, particularly the bed, with a large bathroom with a great shower. We were given water, soft drinks, fresh fruit and small cakes each day. We were located just off a very popular, busy area for shopping but the hotel itself was very quiet. There was a choice of either Chinese or western breakfast and we did a bit of both. Service was excellent. The staff went out of their way to be helpful.

Two very minor.issues. The DuGe is a bit of a walk from the subway but it looks like there will be a closer stop coming in the future as construction seemed to be going on nearby. Also, I would suggest putting a better information pack in each room with details of TV channels, facilities in the hotel and in the room itself, nearby attractions and how to get to them, etc. as is standard in many hotels. We figured out the air conditioning, eventually but an information pack would have made the task easier.

Excellent location. Charming rooms & decoration. Sweet staff yet limited english & poor service regarding directions (arrange trip to great wall...). Use Beijing Backpacking instead. It is just around the corner. Ideal for a romantic week end. Very quiet. Some minor defects in the room (humidity related in the bathroom)
