“Awkward luxury”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2012

Far from the main city sights, surrounded by a busy road and adjacent to Beihang University, there is a hotel that possesses everything but accomplishes nothing.

The first impression is one of awkward luxury: the lobby welcomes you with a beautiful Moebius strip sculpture, and a strange huge wavy wooden panel behind the reception desk to perhaps evoke an ocean of wood, accents that show that someone spent time thinking about design of the hotel and probably read a few books on the matter, and while they often miss the point, you will appreciate the effort. The rooms welcome you with nice hidden lighting effects and but also with strident direct spot lights at places; the fitness room welcomes you with a large sitting area with sofas and a dark, unused bar, with exercise machines waiting in the back for anyone that manages to avoid the temptation to sit and rest; the swimming pool welcomes you with interesting ceiling lights and attractive lounging chairs and tables, but then the water temperature tells you that this is no recreational area, that the pool means business that the cool water will shift your swimming into overdrive. The hotel is very functional and really misses nothing physical: bathrobe and slippers, sauna closet in the locker room, a reasonable quality restaurant on the premises, even a bathroom scale, a nice touch, whose dead batteries they ignored to change after I pointed it out to them.

The most disappointing part is the human experience which, at least for a foreigner who cares, gives you an uneasy feeling. Most of the staff have a very rudimentary English and appear distant to any other form of communication, which renders many of the hotel services, beyond sleeping and being fed, cold and pointless. This specially the case in the Spa which, judging from the furnishings and the skills of my masseuse, could otherwise be great. You will find yourself begging that the hotel staff says something to you, whatever the language.

If your business or pleasures take you to that part of Beijing, and you are not new to China, you can probably not do better than this hotel, which you may likely forget as soon as you take the plane to return home.

I stayed at this hotel for a week in July. It's located on the NW side of Beijing near the 4th Ring Road. It's not too far from Olympic Park. The room was very large and the bed was comfortable. The air conditioner worked great which was good since it was very hot in Beijing at the time. The front desk and consiege staff didn't speak much English but they tried very hard to be helpful and address your question. For example I needed to find a FedEx office and the staff did great helping me out. The breakfast buffet has both Asian and Western entrees. I found the noodles in a beef broth at breakfast to be excellent. You could also get made to order omelettes. The wait staff was attentive. At dinner the staff would rather you had the buffet than order from the menu but the entrees off the menu were good. For getting around Beijing the hotel's near a stop on Line 10 of the subway which can be used to get to the majority of the big tourist attractions. There's also department store about 1 km from the hotel and a Walmart superstore about 2 km from the hotel. There's also a very nice park along a canal very close to the hotel that's good for walking/jogging.

I have staying at this hotel for 3 night in March. This is booked as a package of my conference, so I have no idea of the actual room cost.
During my stay, I was lucky to get a room at the top floor (executive floor). No smoking smell at all. Room - clean and comfortable; ac is not functioning, good that window can be opened. So not a big deal for us
Bathroom - clean and functional
Front desk - limited English speaking level; but overeall polite and professional
transportation - < 5 minutes walk to the subway station
Location - plenty of places to eat in <10 minutes walking distance (but Mandarin speaking or being adventurous is required)
Breakfast - limited choice and over price

I was worried about the room security after reading some of the reviews, but end up I don't have any problems. Indeed, the housekeeping staff have very good sense of security. I walked into my room while the staff is cleaning. She politely asked me to show her that I stay in this room by swiping my key. This is a good check ^^

Room Tip: Request a higher floor. One of the floor (I guess is 17th) is totally non-smoking. Some taxi driv...

The Vision Hotel is located to the North West of the main tourist area of Beijing; as it it within walking distance of a station for the No.10 underground line it is very easy to access all the main attractions within Beijing. Reception staff speak some English and the hotel is modern and clean with a super 25m swimming pool and gym facilities. Only ate breakfast in the hotel once (approx £10 per head) and it was excellent with lots of choices. Maid service was efficient and as we asked for twin beds we had two double beds in the room with en suite with bath and shower. Location is adjacent to a university campus with some pleasant walks. We were on the 19th floor so it was quiet - all bedrooms are 13th floor upwards so all probably quite quiet even though busy road runs in front of the hotel.

This is a 4 star from the point of view of great rooms, but the rom was very hot all 4 days, ranging from 25C to 30C, even with the window open on a day it was snowing and -5C outside. The staff told us 25is god on a cold day and 30 also OK. They put a humidifier in the rom, which did no good. The hotel is relatively far from everything > 1 mile to Olympic stadium and thereof the National Air College and a Mac and KFC in walking distance, but little else. Most taxi drivers had no idea where it was even with directions. On the plus side, the bathroom was one of the plushest we have been in.

I stayed at the Vision several nights as part of a tour which used Beijing as the hub in late September 2011. We had several meals here where the service was poor and the amount of food served inadequate. I had clothes stolen from my case in my room which only turned up eventually as our Chinese tour guide pursued it on our behalf. I was one of three in our party that had items missing from their luggage. Ironically, the jeans and dress that went 'missing' were made in China! I know the Chinese are anxious to reclaim their heritage but I didn't realise it extended to their more recent exports!

Room Tip: If you are a non-smoker, make sure you are allocated a room on the 17th floor. They say that all th...

After reading the pretty positive reviews here, I went ahead and stayed at this hotel on a short trip to BJ this week. I guess I can see how some might like it. It is comparatively new, and the rooms a pretty big. That's about the best I can find to say about it.

In terms of what not to like, that's a long list. The room, while big, is not very functional and while it's pretty new, it is already showing it's age. The furnishings in the room are cheap and grungy, the heating/cooling does not work (set to one tempeture always, irrespective of the fact there is a thermostat), and the bathroom fittings feel grungy and cheap. On the service side, it's Beijing standard for a mid to low grade hotel. The restaurants that I tried, the Taiwanese restaurant, and the Cafe were both abysmal. The gym was big and spartan. There were a few treadmills and other machines that were OK quality. The hotel itself (like many local hotels) feels cold a lifeless.

All that said, the hotel is fairly cheap (at < 600 RMB) but not worth that much. There are plenty of good hotels in BJ, but this is not one of them.
