Brickyard Retreat at Mutianyu Great Wall

Reviewed 6 July 2014

We stayed at the Brick Yard for 2 nights and it was certainly different. Our room was basic but Oh the views , from our toilet and shower you had a magnificent view of the Mutianyu Great Wall. The gardens were lovely to stroll around and the archway smelt of Jasmine(I think) beautiful. They grow their own herbs and veggies. The staff were helpful and friendly.
The only negative was the first night we had rain and a substantial amount of water leaked through our skylight, luckily it was on the bathroom side of our room. The next morning we had a blocked toilet. Apart from those issues we enjoyed staying there as it was close to The Great Wall. It was an experience waking at 4.30am when the sun rises as the rooms do not have full length curtains as it would block out the wonderful view.

Room Tip: This not a hotel that supplies tissues, toiletries or TV, but you haven't time to watch TV.

Dear barnev169, We appreciate your Trip Advisor comments and as the designer I'm just delighted that you enjoyed the views from your room. I am very sorry the skylight leaked over the bathroom. I would like to point out that we do supply shampoo and soap and handmade grass slippers and that other necessities are available on request without additional charge. I think we probably haven't made that clear but we've added room directories to help get the message out to guests. We'll soon be upgrading to all natural shampoo and conditioner by Shangrila Farms and a new all natural soap from Kaimi. A significant numebr of guests have commented, like you, that we don't offer boxed tissues. This was originally part of our commitment to simplicity and sustainability but we are sourcing boxes and tissues and will start providing in the near future. And re the TV -- you're right! But we do have wireless internet everywhere. Thank you again for your thoughtful and fair review and we wish you lots of fun traveling... Jim Spear & Brickyard Team

We stayed in their lovely Stone Forest cottage, which is 5 mins walk from Brickyard reception etc. Walk up to the wall from here is about 90 mins - part road part mountain path - our 4 yr old just about managed it! Walk along the road till the third corn press and take path on right hand side. Once at the top walk along to either cablecar or toboggan. Cottage itself really well appointed and would bring food to cook ourselves if we came again - as not that wild about School House restaurant.

Dear Gouldie, We're delighted to know that you enjoyed your stay at Stone Forest, one of our Brickyard Homes near the Great Wall. There are many dining options in the area, including a wonderful local place just below Stone Forest called Beigala which is cooperatively owned by the Beigou Villagers, and our guests are free to choose the dining experience that is right for them. Wishing you safe and happy adventures, Jim Spear & the Brickyard Team

My boyfriend and I went just before Spring festival as a birthday treat, the staff were lovely in the communication beforehand and gave a complimentary upgrade when they knew the occasion. The facilities are very luxurious, the staff are friendly and food & drink are quite generous.

The only thing I was disappointed with was the surrounding village and view from the room, but that was because I went in winter when the whole of north China is grey and farms barren. I would love to go back a bit later in the year. Also - this was made up for by the fact we could cosy round the fire place in the evening!

As we were on a bit of a budget, when organising our journey back the staff were great about telling us the public transport we could take back to Dongzhimen.

Not somewhere I can afford to go to often, but definitely worth a splurge every now and again. Watch out for their offers online, which are regularly updated and quite a bargain!

This was a great place to stay and get out of Beijing and "do" the wall.
The rooms are basic and have no curtains which is not ideal and frankly not necessary as the view of the wall is ok but not great and you could open them if they were there instead of being woken in the light at 5.00am.
Still that is clear from the website - what is not so clear is the stuff they advertise they do - but don't - bikes, cooking course etc.
We asked about bikes and were told they only had 2 and that they had not been used for sometime, were dusty and so we could not have them. Cooking course advertised on the site - don't do them.
Most people only stay 2 nights - we stayed for 4 which was relaxing but with no room cleaning, bed making etc not perfect and limited food choices if you are there for that long!
There are great walks from there but the "maps" you get are not great and it is easy to get lost and end up either in a very hard steep "path-finding walk" or having to turn back. Some better maps of walks would be a good idea - even trying to mark out routes so there is something to guide you.
Overall it was nice but quite expensive and a lot of what was "on offer" was not.
Staff generally helpful where they could be but did not "go out of their way"

Room Tip: All the rooms face north and have a "view of the wall" It is quiet unless the local farme...

Dear Studd10, Thank you for giving our team your feedback about your four night stay. I am so sorry we didn't get you out and about on the bikes -- we DO have them and they ARE available. It looks to me like our service just wasn't up to snuff. I am so sorry. Our maps weren't meant to be trail guides but we are developing hikes with photos, comments, and GPS waypoints that can be viewed on cell phones so future guests will have an easier time exploring our mountain area. I confess I don't know what cooking classes you're talking about -- I searched our websites after receiving your review -- but I can say our new Great Wall view kitchen is about to come on line and it has been designed for guest participation and chef table dinners. Up to now you are absolutely right, most of our guests have stayed for a night or two, and we will be working very hard to create more activities and better service for our guests who stay longer, like you. Your review was really helpful and you have my personal thanks. Safe travels! Jim Spear

We started our trip to China by booking one of the packages that included transportation and massages - it was wonderful!! Communication was excellent before and during our stay. After 18 hours of flying, it was wonderful to see someone with your name waiting for you at the airport and to take a ride and enjoy the first sites of Beijing and the countryside. Check in was easy and fast and then you arrived in your breathtaking room. Spacious and beautiful - loved the stone floor, the bathroom and the floor to ceiling windows. Grabbed a light dinner and then had relaxing massages by Jake. Got a great night sleep, worked out in their gym in am and then caught their shuttle to the Great Wall - which I have dreamed of visiting forever. That night we enjoyed the Jazz BBQ buffet - excellent, with some of the BEST potato salad I have ever eaten - and I'm from the South - we are picky about potato salad!! Next day after another good breakfast, headed into Beijing with our transportation. I highly recommend the Brickyard as a great way to relax and enjoy your visit to China. If we had more time, I probably would have stayed one more day to just relax and actually enjoy our room and courtyard and the beautiful facility. Jim was an excellent host and make sure you try their wine. All of the staff were very nice and provided great information. I hope I have an opportunity to visit again.

Room Tip: We had a twin room so did not have to worry about the see through shower issue others complained abo...

Three of us visited the SchoolHouse for one night in June, 2014. We booked a two room house for one night. We planned on catching the chairlifts up to the wall, walking it, and riding the toboggan back down.
I was very very impressed with the accommodation - we stayed in the 'Hearts Desire' house. A very relaxing, traditional but modern style house. It had two separate parts to it. The first, a large open living space, with a very modern kitchen, wall to floor windows, views of the mountains all around, and even the great wall in some parts. The second part was the sleeping quarters. Two large bedrooms, air conditioned/heated, with new comfortable beds. There was also a very large courtyard that joined the two living quarters, which included a BBQ, outdoor dining area and grassed area. It also included free wifi which was a bonus.

We brought all of our own food, so be prepared. There is a reastaurant at the main SchoolHouse, but i think its best to bring your own, and enjoy the surrounds the house has to offer.

Ill definitely make the trip back here.

Room Tip: There are many different types of houses/rooms to choose from. Check ahead to find out which will su...

We went to Beijing for a few days between Mongolia and Hong Kong and took advantage of the 72-hour visa free transit policy in China - Awesome! Anyhow, we spent a day in Beijing city touring the common sites before heading out to Mutianyu for 2 days of Great Wall action. We loved our stay at the Brickyard. From the hotel, we were able to walk to the Wall, along a fairly intensive, but quiet, country road and explore a quieter part of the Wall before taking the cable car back down and taking in some cold adult beverages at their sister restaurant, The Schoolhouse. Rooms are cute, clean, water pressure is awesome, and internet is free. What more do you need? It was the perfect transit trip.
