“Great location, very nice owners”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

We can highly recommend this hostel as the location is great and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We got fresh towels whenever we asked for it and leaving our luggage there after check-out was no problem.

After reading the reviews, I decided to take a chance with this hostel / courtyard hotel. I already something about courtyard hotels and was not expecting any luxuries. However being rated #8 out of more than 400 B&B, and specialty housing, I was expecting more. First, I thought it would have a decent size courtyard -- the central distinguishing feature of Hutong style courtyard lodgings. There is barely room to walk through the courtyard. Rooms are rather small and bathroom, even smaller (relatively). My disappointment is primarily triggered from the high rating some writers had given to this place. This place is suited for upscale backpackers and no more. If the earlier ratings this place had received were not so high, I may have been a bit more generous in rating this place higher, because it does have some strong points. Staff is friendly and helpful, and speaks English at the level one would expect from Hutong Stay staff. The location is fantastic and close to Nanlouguxiang street -- the primary reason of my stay. I have checked other places near in and around this street and they are pricey. So if you are in the adventure mode and bring in low expectations, this place just might be an ideal location for the price. Pictures are worth a 1000 words, but these days they can be be deceiving

Room Tip: Some rooms do not have attached bathrooms, make sure to ask for one when making reservations

Is a wonderful little hotel, great family and give you a warm welcome.. Forget major chains hotel if you want to feel the proper Beijing experience, with a warm feel in the Nalugouxiang with all the bars, restaurant, all the little snack joint and the surrounding area..
Love to come back to this hotel, next time I'm back in Beijing without question..

I had booked the room in Purple courtyard for 3 adults . This room named Family room was descripted with the following amenities:
• Three Single Beds
• The private bathroom
• Free WiFi
• 21-inch LCD television
• Complimentary bottled water
• Makeup/shaving mirror
We received the small room with one single and one double decker bed without bathroom. The bathroom we used was in the open terrace. It was in usage of three rooms (about 10 people). Plumbing system in this small bathroom worked badly and the smell in toilet room was not so good. The Internet did not work properly, television was of obsolete model, not promised 21-inch LCD. The electrical equipment (jacks) was destroyed. Bottled water and mirror weren't in the room. The hostel administration offered another room with private bathroom only for the last night of our stay. The additional problem was that the staff almost did not speak English.
The price for this poor room was very high .

Room Tip: Keep distance

A small family operation, with four ensuite rooms on the lower level and more rooms with shared bath on the upper level, this lodging provides quite an authentic hutong experience. You're right in the famous hutong neighborhood 南锣鼓巷 and it's a very walkable area compared to most of sprawling Beijing. Each morning we awoke and meandered down the alleys to the nearby cafes and had brunch while watching locals walk by. One thing about the neighborhood is that it has become quite popular with the teens, but maybe that's just the way gentrification proceeds. The hosts were cordial though not that warm. They were willing to launder our clothes and drive us to the airport (it's quite hard to hail cabs in Beijing) for a fee. The bath in the room is a shower head that hangs above the toilet, not a separate stall.

Hutongs are old buildings and usually toilet facilities are communal in a neighborhood facility. There are definitely times of the day where the odor of sewerage pervades the alley ways, and sometimes we would be hit by it as soon as we stepped outside the hotel gate. The first day there was a smell in a room we had, but the hosts thankfully moved us to one without a smell. Just things to be prepared for should you go.

The Purple Courtyard is a fine establishment. Not at all fancy, but reasonably comfortable accommodations near the truly charming Nanluoguxiang. An absolutely delightful hutang experience! The price was okay, not great, but wow! Location, location, location!!

A lot of people want the authentic hutong experience, and this is a good place to get it. Just adjust your expectations. This is a very simple, no frills, place. It was relatively clean, and the staff was somewhat helpful...although when I asked for a map, she charged me for a map clearly marked "Free," but I just found that amusing. Free wi-fi was very useful. Our room had a shared bathroom and we didn't have to wait for other people very often. The shower is adequate and clean but needs an update. Now, the location. This was not an easy place to find, and it's quite far from the nearest subway station. If you are coming from the airport, you should take the Airport Express, then negotiate a good price with a pedicab driver. (Make sure you have him write down the price, so you don't get ripped off). Taxis cannot go into the hutongs, so the pedicab is the only way, unless you walk from Andingmen station, but that's 20-30 minutes away. The best thing about this hotel/hostel is that it's 2 minutes walking from Great Leap Brewing! I highly recommend this place to hang out and have some craft beer (a rarity in China) on a hot summer evening in a quiet courtyard. Being a short walk from Great Leap is a big reason to recommend the Purple Courtyard.
