Review New Oriental Suites Beijing
An apartment at New Oriental Suites is an ideal way to spend several days (or weeks) in Beijing. The location is convenient, the management is very helpful, and the rates are an excellent value (about half as much as a business class hotel room in central Beijing).
Located an easy 10-15 minute walk east of the Dongzhimen subway station (and the adjacent Airport ABC express train terminus and the Dongzhimen regional bus station), these apartments are perfectly located for airport access and city sightseeing. Also, bus #909 to the “798” art gallery district (30 minutes east) stops very near the apartment entrance.
The apartments are in the Seasons Park/Cosmopolite high rise complex, which has tennis courts and a nice lawn area for relaxation. Security guards are present at each gate.
There is a small 7/11 convenience store adjacent to the north gate and a nice Jenny Loos supermarket (western food at western prices) 100 meters west of the south gate.
I did not see many restaurants in the area, but there is a large food court in the Ginza Mall basement adjacent to the subway station. Sanlitun area nightlife is a short taxi ride east.
The apartments are ultramodern. Mine showed a little wear, but was well-maintained. My apartment was a studio (living and sleeping area in the same room). I do not know if larger apartments are available for families. See the photos above this review.
My apartment was on the 11th floor, with a window wall overlooking treetops.
The apartment has a full kitchen, with an electric cook top, microwave, mini-refrigerator, sink, and all necessary cooking supplies and dinnerware.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a clothes washing machine, iron, and ironing board.
The sleeping/living area has a queen size double bed that is very firm (my preference) with good bed linens, which are changed twice a week.
There is a large flat screen TV with only one non-Chinese (English) channel from CCTV. There is a counter-top dining area/desk near the window wall, with one chair (ask for a second chair if needed). Closet and storage space are abundant. There is a large water cooler with safe drinking water.
The bathroom has a sink, toilet, and large shower (no tub) with good water pressure and abundant hot water. The bath towels are large, and are changed two or three times a week.
The management staff (one gentleman and two ladies) are helpful. If you are staying a week or more, they will take your passport for one hour to register it with the local police.
If you do not have a subway/bus pass, they will lend you theirs, and you can refill it or pay them whatever amount you use up.
When you arrive, ask the management how to use the cook top, exhaust fan, and climate control, since the digital controls are very modern and are not intuitive.
Finding the apartment complex for the first time can be tricky. The management will email a map with your reservation confirmation, but that may not be enough. Here are my instructions:
When arriving at Donzhimen on the subway, follow the instructions the management gives you, using exit C.
When arriving via the airport ABC express train, exit via the stairs to the sidewalk (you cannot access exit C), then walk east (the McDonalds and Ginza Mall will be across the street on your right) for about 10 minutes. You will cross a few large streets, but there are pedestrian crossing lights (watch for traffic anyway). When you come to a large colorful traditional Chinese triple gateway, cross the street (from the north side to the south side) via the pedestrian crossing light. A few feet to the east (on your left) is an alley which winds clockwise around the corner behind the buildings. The low gate to the apartment complex and its security guard will be just a few meters ahead of you.
These New Oriental Suites apartments are an ideal way to visit Beijing. Beijing can be polluted and exhausting at times, but it is always interesting and friendly. Get a good guidebook and use it to plan your own sightseeing using the excellent subway system.
I hope this is useful information. Enjoy your stay.
