Dear Con P,

What a shame that you only rated the hotel average because we do not have a staircase and that you felt unsafe and had to travel to go and see some of the attractions. As you now know all Hutongs in Beijing are narrow lanes and is very much part of the characteristic and history of Beijing and actually one of the main reasons people stay with us. All this is very transparent from all the reviews written about our little hotel. We actually have one of the best locations one can have, 25 minutes walk from Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, Lama temple, , 5 minutes walk from metro, Wangfucheng to take you anywhere in the city, you could not be more central. Of course if you take a wrong taxi anywhere else in the world there would be an issue. In Beijing taxis do not tend to drive into Hutongs as there is no chance for pick ups. This is a very large city so yes you will need to take a metro, cab or car like anywhere else so I am disappointed that we did not meet your expectation but at the same time a little confused what it is that you expected.

I also like to address the issue of feeling unsafe. and inform other trip advisor users it might be important to state that there is a lot of heavy footfall of people walking to and from our Shijia Hutong. It is a tree lined Hutong and houses some very prominent people including the only Hutong museum in the world. In all the time that we have been operating here we have not had one incident and all this is verified by many other reviews. In short I can actually let other people be assured that not just our Hutong in general all Hutongs are super safe day and night and is a must when exploring Beijing.

I am glad however that you seem to enjoy the staff and the service and that you got home safe to Brisbane.

Had a 5 night stay in a split level apartment fronting onto the beautiful garden courtyard in this Hotel. Not a problem with 3 in the room. Great service, great location, great room and in a hutong that might not be the most traditional but is close to shops, supermarkets and some classy wonton restaurants and to be honest just simply riding their free mountain bikes around the block and nearby hutongs each afternoon was GREAT!!!!! Great breakfasts included in deal that made our whole China trip. Loved Xian as well but out of 3 top rated Hotels 'Red Wall' was the best. P.S. Deal with Mark at Best-our.com. They have great drivers and cars.

Room Tip: Use drivers and let tour guides book your tickets to places as they get it cheaper and collect you f...

Dear Davenshell,

Thank you very much for taking the time in writing a five star review for our boutique hotel. Reviews like your do help us compete against the larger international chains and i am so happy that you think you made the right decision.

Breakfast is included when booking direct and also we can pick people up from the airport if you stay 3 nights or more which are great incentives . wen now have 5 bikes at the hotel and I do think it is the best way of seeing beijing but than again i am from Holland!

It might be interested to note that we use one company for people making tours in beijing. We only charge a minimal mark up to cover our expenses but booking directly with other can be a hit and miss. I am glad all worked out for you but this is not always the case I can assure you.

In the mean time I am glad you made it home to beautiful Brisbane and hope that you will come back to us in Shijiia hutong in the not too distant future.

Best wishes

Robert

We loved our stay at the Red Wall Garden Hotel. We spent 5 nights in Beijing & surrounds, and enjoyed coming back each night to this hotel. It is a small (40 room) hotel, and the staff are lovely. The hotel is an old building in the hutongs which has been added to, and it has a lovely character to it. Facilties are good, the service is excellent, and the restaurant is great. Eating out in the courtyard at night is lovely. I am vegetarian and wanted some slightly different food to what was on the menu, and nothing was a problem. The hotel is close to the forbidden city, temple of heaven, Tiananmen square etc. The hotel can organise drivers to take you out to further away sights such as the Great Wall. Highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for 5 days as part of an 11-day visit to China. It was our first visit to China and we don't know the language at all. We had heard that facilities and services in China for tourists are not as well developed as in Europe, and in general this was true. However, Red Wall Garden was a big exception.

We were amazed at the size and comfort of the suite, the helpfulness of the staff, the quality of the food, and the general unique character of the hotel overall. This is a relatively small "boutique" hotel but we liked it better than the more conventional major-brand hotels. The grounds and the room itself are decorated in what I would describe as a rustic Chinese style, but all of the functionality (plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, refrigerator, beds, etc.) were completely modern and comfortable for a westerner: western toilets, huge showers, comfy beds and furniture, lots of US-compatible 2-prong outlets. It was very clean.

With our family of 3 we decided to go for a one-bedroom suite, and it was plenty large for us. In fact, you might have packed 3 or 4 standard US hotel rooms into our suite. It was huge. There were two bathrooms, each with a huge shower. The main bed was extremely comfortable, certainly just as good as our bed at home or in any high-quality hotel. Our daughter says her roll-away bed was not as comfortable. Right outside the room was a huge library with a comfy couch, a big table, and a desk.

Staff were very nice, many spoke English and helped us learn a little Chinese, and they seemed to like their jobs.

There were no big problems. Small problems: One shower was slow-draining, and it took two requests over 2 days to get it fixed. Once fixed it worked perfectly. An elevator would have been nice since our room was on the 4th floor.

Room Tip: No elevator

Dear Paulinebellevue,

Thank you so much for calling us a "Gem" and inform all fellow Trip Advisor users. I am very happ[y we made the mark in your opinion and I ams specially pleased that you enjoyed the food as we have just launched our new menu for the courtyard bistro.

I am afraid we do not have elevators but we always try to allocate young and fit people at the top floor , ha and in general this is nmot an issue but we are conscious of this. Also thank you for noting the drain to me. As a hotel we are not always perfect and although we certainly try when we learn things we always try to solve the problem immediately.

I hope you will decide to come back to our hotel and continue the Chinese lessons with our staff. In the mean time I am happy to note that you got home safe in Washington.

warmest wishes

Red Wall Garden Hotel is by far one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in. With a city of 20 million people, I was looking for some space and tranquility when we left the tourist spots and busy streets. The furnishings are gorgeous and in the traditional style, the location is incredibly convenient, and the breakfasts were yummy with many choices. I loved that it was quiet and located on a traditional hutong (alley) yet was close to areas to walk to such as shopping, the subway, and tourist sites. The rooms are large with great air conditioning and bathroom and mini-bar. The people who work there are wonderful - very helpful in providing directions, finding places to go and how to get there, and overall very kind hosts. I thought the pictures on-line might be too good to be true, but they are totally accurate. I highly recommend staying here.

Dear Susan,

The pictures are true!!! thank you so for for taking the time and informing fellow trip advisor users. I n noticed this is your first review band we are very happy that your first one was a five star one.

Our location is great being in the heart of the city but yet with all the tranquility one can imagine. You might be interested to note that the restaurant has just started it's new menu bistro style ...

I am glad you made it home safe to Delaware and I hope you will visit us again in the not too distant future.

This boutique hotel is perfectly located to visit Beijing. The fact that it is in a HUTONG gives you even a better feel of the city. The staff did an excellent job accommodating. The outdoor patio and the indoor area of the hotel are inviting, relaxing and takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Truly a great place to stay and one that I would recommend to anybody that visits Beijing. Food was great as well.

Room Tip: You can either ask for a room that opens up to the main patio of the hotel or a room that is actuall...

Dear Julian,

Thank you very much for writing such a positive review on trip advisor and inform fellow trip advisor users. Your review is especially good as you are based in Shanghai and therefore understand the local market.

I am especially pleased as you made a comment about the food being great. I am not sure if you were one of the first to try our new bistro style menu serving traditional Chinese dishes. We now have sourced some great Chinese wines as well at great value.

As you are in China I do hope you will return to Shijia Hutong, once again , thank you
