“Great place, great staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2012

The Orchid is every bit as good as its reviews. The location is excellent, rooms are very comfortable (great beds, Apple TV etc), breakfasts are delcious and the staff are everso helpful, going out of their way to assist in any way possible- taxis, restaurant recommendations, train tickets, show tickets. It was so good there that we extended our stay a couple of extra nights.

Really central little hotel hidden away in the Hutong.

Great breakfast included, incredibly helpful, friendly staff (the owner went out of his way to help us buy a local cell phone), comfortable beds, Apple TV, very neat and clean....

Nothing not to like! Just sad we couldn't afford to stay longer.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Orchid. It’s the perfect spot for those who want to enjoy an authentic Beijing experience in an old area of the city, without compromising on home comforts like the great and various breakfast and wonderful hot shower – very welcome after a humid day’s walking around temples! We had a quaint loft style bedroom – sooo comfy! It was like a little oasis from the hustle and bustle of everyday Beijing life. Free wi-fi kept us in touch with home and fresh fruit to snack on – it’s the little things, right?! Joe and his team, (who between them speak a plethora of languages) never put us wrong in pointing out directions towards sightseeing, eating and shopping highlights. They arranged excursions to the Acrobatics show in the Chaoyang theatre and to the Great Wall with a minimum of fuss and fixed us up with our excellent tour guide. Difficult to find for first time visitors but well worth the search! Would definitely return.

We stayed at the Orchid based on the reviews and i must say it is as good as everyone say. From the first day on arrival to the check out the service was impressive. The staff (Raphaelle and Sophia in particular) are very knowledgeable and get out of their way to make you feel welcome. We also loved the comfy beds and the toileteries and the bar with some good wines by the glass and bottle. The resident cats are lovely too. We were recommended various local restaurants and were never desapointed. So a big thanks to team Orchid.

We booked the Orchid months in advance as it got good reviews on tripadvisor.
The map and instructions off their website were very useful as otherwise it would be impossible to find.
The hotel is hidden behind a restaurant down a little alley (just as they described).
Inside the hotel it was very new and clean, with lots of character. A nice layout of rooms, bar, terrace with the dining room (lovely views overlooking the hutong).
We spent a couple of nights in a garden room and then the look out room.
The garden room was large with a sofa and desk. It had a small table and chairs outside as private open space.
Then in the look out room, the room was also large with table, no sofa but a nice view over the drum and bell tower.
Both rooms had very comfortable UK super king beds, tvs, clean spacious bathrooms with nice toiletries, towels changed daily. A small fruit basket and distilled drinking water were provided in the rooms which was a really nice touch.
Free wifi in both rooms (also in the communal areas).
Breakfast was included and this was a highlight. There are 7-8 different options to select from. All are very filling and delicious. Tea, coffee, orange juice also provided.
There is a laundry service available and the turn around was quick.
You can also have drinks in the bar (locally produced beers were very tasty).
Staff are all very helpful and polite. As you are in the middle of a hutong there are lots of restaurants, staff will happily recommend.
Its also a short walk to the drum and bell towers. And to the main road where you can catch taxis (which are very cheap) or back to the subway station.
This is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed at. A great location, all the small touches thought of, great breakfast, friendly staff.
If and when we go back to Beijing we would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights, mostly having read the many positive reviews on Trip Advisor.

As the hotel's own literature says, finding The Orchid is 'part of the fun'. It can be a little difficult as the entrance is at the end of a passageway leading off a partially redeveloped hutong. The passageway itself is littered with bicycles, rubbish and - when it rains - material from nearby sewers. The hotel is reached through a frosted glass door with a bell to get assistance. Once one has the keys, one can gain access by using an electronic key fob. When we arrived, there was no one answering the doorbell and we had to phone the hotel to get someone to open the door.

Once inside, it is clear that a lot of work has been done on the hotel. There is a small but well-furnished bar area with some sofas and bar chairs. This also doubles as the reception. The staff all spoke excellent English and were helpful and efficient in checking us in. The hotel's rooms are arranged around a single courtyard with the breakfast/dining area up a wooden staircase.

We took the most basic room: a double bed with an en suite shower / toilet. The room was clean and reached at ground level from the main courtyard. Fresh fruit and a clean supply of drinking water were provided and this was appreciated. The double bed was - in contrast to many beds in China (!) - really very soft. My wife liked it, I found it too soft. The blinds on the courtyard windows were Venetian-style and didn't really stop people who came close to the window looking in. There was medium-sized flat panel TV mounted over the bed. Strangely, the TV was not mounted centrally so one needed to look to the left to watch it. The TV provided was in the form of variable quality (with some clearly pirated and made from hand-held recordings in cinemas) digital recordings delivered by an Apple TV. This was handy in that I was able to stream music from my iPhone over the hotel's quick broadband and through the television. The bathroom was clean and the included toiletries were nice with a fresh citrus-y smell. Unfortunately, if you were late up or wanted a shower in the evenings, there didn't seem to be enough hot water.

The breakfasts are chosen from a menu of 7 or 8 pre-set options. These include fruit, yoghurt and granola a cheese and ham toasted sandwich, pancakes and a coffee and cigarettes option. The food was good, although not as good as it sounded. On the two days we stayed, the hotel had neither fruit juice nor coffee, which was a shame. On both mornings, it took a little effort hunting around to find the person serving breakfast - they wouldn't come to greet you.

Check-out was painless except for the fact that the hotel did not accept credit or debit cards. The nearest ATM is a relatively short walk. The hotel were helpful in booking a taxi to take us back to the airport (we have very rudimentary Mandarin). The metro is a roughly 5 minute walk away and easy to find.

Whilst the hotel is pleasant, the facilities generally good, the location convenient for attractions like the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, some of the more developed hutongs and central stops on the metro, there was an overly casual style. I think that including pirated movies, not approaching guests to offer service and slip-ups like not having coffee or hot water meant that this hotel came in under my expectations given all the other very positive reviews on here.

As a final note, when we travelled in April, many much plusher hotels had deals on that made them the same price as The Orchid and so better value.

The Orchid is in a fabulous location - despite reading Trip Advisor concerns about finding this hotel - the staff are great, the breakfast (included in our tariff) excellent, and the facilities very good. The only problems we had were the much vaunted Apple TV network which stopped working on our second night - and the staff couldn't fix it either - and the standard of cleanliness which could have been better, particularly our bathroom. Otherwise top marks for a great Hutong stay.
