This is a gem of a boutique hotel that fills a nitch & perfectly done, a blend of modern with older features retained. Fantastic location if you like wandering hutongs & local neighborhoods like we do. It's a 15 to 20 minute walk to the nearest subway station but that will change later when nearer stations will open on the new line.

We stayed in the Yin room which was a very good size for a hutong hotel. Beds are very comfy but can be a bit soft if you are used to harder ones. Lovely bathrooms with piping hot water. The climate control in the room was for aircon only for the warmer months. Heating is supplied by underfloor heating only. Being December it's very cold & only just managed to heat the room. If you are not opening & closing the door it stays warm.
Apple TV is a nice touch. Bottles of water, fresh fruit & lovely flavored tea is supplied. Wifi was slow & kept cutting out sometimes at the time of our stay. The Yin Room included a small private courtyard area which was too cold during December to take advantage of, but would be nice in the warmer months.

Breakfast is incredibly well done & thoughtfull. There are some lovely choices all served in an upstars room with lots of character.

We come to Beijing often & The Orchid will now become a firm favorite. After a busy day its nice to relax over a glass of wine in lounge/bar area - it feels more like you are visiting someones home & its very cosy and relaxed feeling.
The staff deserve a standing ovation. They bend over backwards to help you and are very warm & welcoming.

We started our four week China trip with three nights at the end of September at the Orchid. We chose the Orchid based purely on their great TA rating and comments. We stretched our budget a tiny bit to get a room there, but it was definitely worth it. We arrived late, pretty tired after our flight and luckily the taxi driver found the hotel without any problems, despite it being a bit hidden (which we had read beforehand).

We can echo the same comments of others' by saying that the beds were amazing, their Apple TV was great for relaxing in the evenings and we looked forward every morning to having a yummy breakfast on their balcony (the banana bread was so good it was addictive!). The hotel staff incl. the owner/manager were helpful, even booking a fantastic Peking duck dinner. We also got to experience a wine tasting evening with food, all complimentary.

The location was also good, although it does throw you in at the deep end if you've never been to China before (like us), as the authentic Hutong is a bit chaotic. It is also near a more touristic area around the nearby lake which is nice for evenings meals and drinks.

We would definitely recommend this hotel and would choose them again if we returned!

Great hotel with excellent location in a traditional chinese street, Hutong. The Hotel is small & charming with a nice design. Breakfast is fantastic as are the staff! Very friendly & service minded staff that speak excellent english, whish is a true advantage :-) The rooms are small but nice. The only drawback was that it was very, very cold in the room and in the hotel in general. But in all fairness, it was one of the coldest days in Beijing this winter. The room heated up after a while, but 1 extra blanket per bed was needed.
The street where the hotel is located is very traditional, and we loved it! Just be prepaired, it might not been the cleanest street you have walked. Go here!

We were sad to leave this wonderful place with its wonderful staff simply because we had a great time here! The staff are very knowledgeable about Beijing City and will help you plan your way around the city or make bookings/reservations for you, print maps. We booked a driver from the hotel to pick us from the airport and that made it easier, if not, we would probably get lost! But once you explore the area, it becomes easy to move around on your own. Plenty of little eateries, cafes, shops in the neighborhood. Our room was clean and comfortable. Loved the heated flooring, especially since we were there in winter! It snowed while we were there and that made the whole place a winter wonderland! Kudos to the staff at The Orchid! If we go to Beijing again, this is where we would stay!

Beijing may not have many genuine boutique hotels but this is a good example. Located off an alley entrance from a traditional lane (Baochao Hutong), the Orchid is a a modernised courtyard hotel, with some new second-storey rooms built on top of the original Chinese buildings. Architecturally the hotel is beautifully done, elegantly finished in white, cream and brow (see the hotel website). Breakfast is excellent, though in quality rather than quantity.

Having said all that, readers should be aware this is exactly the kind of place that tends to be overrated on TA. Most of the (satisfied) customers haven't stayed anywhere else in Beijing, and are comparing the place with similar ones in other countries, rather than other hotels in the Chinese capital.

People thinking of staying at the Orchid should really consider 'going the full hutong' and staying in one of the dozen or so authentic traditional Chinese hotels in the same general Drum Tower, Nanluoguxiang, Hou Hai area north of the Forbidden City. There are wonderful places out there.

The Orchid is located in an authentic (some might say transitional) neighborhood. Do not be alarmed as you arrive--the hotel itself is lovely, with comfortable rooms, an outstanding breakfast, and a very helpful (and English-speaking) staff . There are some excellent restaurants in the small alley outside the Orchid, and you will definitely experience the real sights, sounds, and smells of China there. Yet all of that disappears when you enter the Orchid--breakfast on the second level is a great way to start your day, and the hotel is not far from the main Beijing attractions. The in-room fruit selection is a nice touch too. We absolutely endorse the positive reviews on this site.

An overdue but well deserved review for The Orchid. Fully agree that the breakfasts were delicious. In fact, the kitchen was able to customise our breakfast "No bread/tomatoes" and we once asked for breakfast at 11a.m. and the kitchen obligingly prepared that for us! The bed, shower toiletries, Apple TV were all luxuries which made our stay more pleasurable.

We had the courtyard room on the ground floor with a private balcony, with swinging wooden doors as entrance. The entire hotel makes you feel like you are home because of the staff (we met co-owner Joe, got to try their homemade beer and spent the night at the reception/ bar chatting while meeting visitors from other parts of the world). Everyone who works there are friendly, helpful (printed maps for us and gave us directions to find an eatery) yet unintrusive. There are places to lounge - in the reception or outside in the common courtyard and you can even hear the bust going on around hutong - not noisy but you feel you are right in Beijing!

Besides Mr Shi's dumpling, we discovered the spicy hot pot dip just shops down which opens past midnight! They offer one of the best MaLa (hot) dips and we actually took a taxi back from the city centre (we did 2 nights in Hyatt) to have lunch there on our last day!

Dali courtyard, a popular restaurant is just lanes away. We had a nice walk in the evening, starting from the hotel to Dali and crossed the street to Nanluoguxiang after dinner. It was relaxing and just too convenient to get around and always have food stalls around every corner so you won't go hungry!

One tip though, the main road can get jammed up badly on weekends. If you are in a taxi, you are better off memorizing 'Bao Chao Hutong' (where Orchid is), hop off the cab and walk in. This way you enjoy seeing the local scenes and also enjoy the non-city side of Beijing.
