We stayed at this hotel for three nights in December 2013 and had a pretty good experience. Our room was big with heated floors, which was great considering how cold Beijing gets during that time of year.

It is located within a hutong and is central to many tourist sites as well as close to the metro lines, making it rather convenient to get around.

The staff is multilingual and helped us organize a trip to the Great Wall with their driver and had also picked up tickets for our train to Shanghai for a nominal fee.

Breakfast was included in our rate and was served a la cart, was rather good and a nice start to the mornings.

We found this hotel to be a bit pricy but it was in fact very comfortable. We had an issue with our door not locking but eventually the staff fixed it, was just a little paranoid leaving the room unlocked when we went out.

I stayed in this hotel for one night. Prior to this one night, I stayed in a Sheraton for a week and the experience at The Orchid could not be any more different. The hotel's location was major the draw for us. It is located in the middle of the hutongs, within walking distance to a number of sights. Beijing hutongs provide a view into the very authentic Chinese life but are a growing trendy location for hip restaurants, shops and bars. . The alleys can be narrow, very dirty, and stink like nothing you've ever experienced. While this appealed to us, I feel we should definitely caution anyone who is looking for a more refined experience.

The hotel itself is comfortable, albeit small. The room was sufficiently cozy for one night, although it would have felt small for more than a night or two. The bathroom was modern with an american toilet, although it too was extremely small. The staff of the hotel was friendly and in general, a stay at the hotel feels at bit like staying in a home with other friends. The staff did my laundry (for a much lower rate than what the Sheraton charges) but keep in mind that everything will dry by air. Also, if you need to catch a taxi with luggage from the hotel, please call well in advance because it is difficult for a taxi to navigate the narrow alleys so many choose to avoid attempting to go there.

The best aspect of this hotel are the outdoor spaces. In particular is a nice balcony area that overlooks the nearby hutongs and has a nice view of the bell tower. Also, make sure to get dumplings from the restaurant across the hutong. Maybe the best kept secret in Beijing! The equivalent of $3 will get you a beer and 18 of the best dumplings you've ever had!

Best thing is the location: in a quiet hutong near lots of fantastic bars and restaurants. The map provided by the hotel is excellent. We stayed in the Ying Room. At 1200rmb it seemed a little pricey but there aren't many alternatives in Beijing. I'd like to return in the summer, when the terrace I expect is lovely. Not sure why tripadviser insist on a 200 word limit. I don't have much more to say. It's pretty cold in Beijing in the winter, so if you are visiting bring lots of socks.

We spent three nights at the Orchid in early April. We certainly concur with the rave reviews about its Hutong location, the helpful staff, “free” cellphone loaner, excellent breakfast and general funkiness. We are somewhat bemused, though, by the wholly uncritical reviews by most TripAdvisors.

We found peeling countertops in the bathroom and the floors were not as clean as they could be. Our “large” room had no chairs and no desk of any sort. Our travelling companion’s room was tiny and the double bed was situated so the person on the inside could only get out of bed by crawling over their partner.

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives and if in Beijing again we will definitely consider staying at the Orchid. We will also be aware that The Orchid is not absolutely perfect!

Room Tip: Choose a bigger room unless you are OK with being very cramped. Ground floor is best unless you don...

We stopped for 5 nights in early October 2013 and what a find!! The hotel was perfect and staff were amazing and attentive. The hotel is in the middle of one of the old Hutongs and in a very authentic area. Loads of bars and great little restaurants. We were greeted with a room upgrade and were provided with a welcome box containing a local phone preformed in case we got lost, a map of the local area which we used to the full. Great breakfasts too!!

We thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend and would definitely go back if we were in Beijing again

Most of Beijing, and almost all the hotels catering to Western tourists, are in undistinguished, modern, high rises with nothing within walking distance but shopping malls and eight lane roads. The Orchid is in a neighborhood of alley homes near the Drum and Bell Tower, and gives you a completely different perspective. There are plenty of interesting, offbeat (Yunnanese, "ethnic minority Sichuan", etc.) restaurants within walking distance, and you can borrow a bike and cycle around the area to see the Towers, Houhai, Lama and Confucius temples, and Jingshan Park, as well as quaint little bars (El Nido, Modernista), old-fashioned coffee shops, and quaint stores. The hotel staff are extremely helpful and enthusiastic. The rooms are idiosyncratic, but all have modern bathrooms, nice furnishings, and are comfortable. This place is the antidote to people who come to China, especially Beijing, and complain that it's been ruined by development. I've stayed there twice and can't recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: The Yang room has a private rooftop deck with a fantastic view of the Bell Tower.

I came across The Orchid via a CNN-Travel Beijing hotel recommendations article, and i absolutely loved every second of my stay. Trying to actually find The Orchid was a bit of an effort but after that one time it was easy to retrace our steps every time. We arrived fairly late in the afternoon/early evening and i was delighted to see a friendly cat on the sofa.

Staff was very helpful but did seem to be (possibly?) a little taken aback at how young we were probably because we had booked the most expensive room ( I'm mid twenties but i'm told i look like a 16 year old, and my companion doesn't look that much older either). In any case they weren't as warm as the reviews had led me to believe, however the staff that i encountered later (after shift change ) were extremely warm, helpful and accommodation and in general a pleasure to be around.

The room itself was also great: clean, extremely soft and comfy beds, apple TV and a bowl of fresh fruit and even had it's own small private terrace (if you want a breath of fresh air without actually leaving the premise).

The hotel is a short walking distance away from the train station and there are loads of meal options around the place. The Orchid's menu is also an option - I had the pancake breakfast and would recommend it.

If you want a stroll at night you can always loose yourself in the maize of houtongs and stumble across amazing shops and experiences.

I have no complaints and i will be returning again in the near future. Thank you Orchid staff for a great time !
