Stayed here for a weekend. Awesome staff, great location. The place must be even better in the warmer time of the year - the yard is nice. The cats was an extra plus for our two kids.
Will be back in the spring and enjoy a glass of wine in the yard.

Very friendly staff and excellent meals. Stayed in a room with a fireplace which was very nice late in the year. Minutes away from refurbished section of the wall and the Box House is right next to a section of the Wall that is a little more challenging.

Had a wonderful stay, two adults and one child (age 9). Stayed in one of the non-communal rooms with a fireplace. Come with cash… there are no ATMs to be found and no one takes credit cards. Loved hiking the Great Wall - no one was around and the weather was beautiful. Overall, just a mind-blowing, incredible experience.

If you wish to explore a less touristy part of the wall and pamper yourself, look no elsewhere. Great Wall box is a small, intimate guesthouse located in Gubeikou offering both private rooms and dormitory. And what everyone wants to know: YES. You can really go to the Great Wall by foot from the guesthouse! (see below for details) There are only 5 rooms in total, guaranteeing a "no-crowd" experience, built-in in a traditional Chinese house with square court. If your budget allows (1,200 CY / night including breakfast AND diner!), then definitely go for the private double-room. It has SUCH a warm and cosy feeling to it, with wooden beams, incredibly comfortable tatami-style bed, huge heavenly feather quilt you never want to leave, quality bathroom equipments, and private small terrace...plus some great extras such as a fireplace fully equipped to make your own fire (gloves, wood, fire lighter...), essential oil burner, candles, tea set, minibar with complimentary soft drinks and... my favourite: a Japanese-style toilet seat to keep your bottom cheeks warm in the morning! WIFI connection was really good and free all through the hotel rooms. So if you are a workaholic, do not worry about the remoteness of the place.
The most fantastic aspect of this guesthouse is that the Great Wall is easily reachable by foot from the hotel: it takes only a 15-20 mn walk to reach the gate entrance, then there are several track options for you to chose, from 30 mn walk to 5-6 hours longer hikes. That part of the wall is ancient and not too steep, but you can also walk up to a more modern part of it. There was NO loud-speakers, crowded bunch of tour operators or bragging street sellers...paradise!!
In terms of F&B, If you book a private double-room, breakfast AND diner are both included in the price. Diner is at fixed-hour time (6.30 PM) and served family-style among the guests. Although you do not chose what you eat, I was happily surprised to see all the efforts made to match our foreign tastes: Kungpao chicken with tender, juicy cubed-chicken breast (goodbye skin and bones!!), a selection of healthy (and not oily!!) sautéed vegetables and tofu, white rice...all very fresh and tasty, while not spicy. Unbeatable! Breakfast was very tasty too, you can chose from a selection of items like waffles, home-made bread toasts, eggs, noodles etc...Coffee was great too and with free refill!
Last but not least, the logistics part: the guesthouse is a 2 hours drive from Beijing International airport. Pick up by the guesthouse is possible, and costs 500 CY per car. You can also go by bus from Beijing downtown (Dongzhimen) for less than 15 CY, with a 3 hours trip and 1 bus change.
To conclude, if you are an independant-minded traveler, who like to hike off the beaten tracks but still enjoys a bit of pampering, you are going to love this place. The place is perfect for couples too.
Tip # 1 =>If you are with your Special One, snap a nice bottle of red wine or Champagne and enjoy it in-room by your private fireplace...with snow falling outside! Wine lovers: same goes. be aware, only beers are available from the drink list.
Tip # 2 => You are planning a full day hike on the wall? Just ask the guesthouse reception to pack you some home-made sandwiches. They offer a selection of simple but tasty sandwiches: salad / tuna or a vegetarian-friendly option with just eggs and tomatoes. Remember to take some water with you, as I don't remember having seen any small shops on the way to the wall.
Tip # 3 => when you plan to head back to Beijing, keep in mind the insane traffic conditions at busy hours...you may want to avoid a too harsh "back to reality" effect! So leave before 4 PM if you can.

Room Tip: If you are not restricted in terms of budget, indulge in the double private room! There are only 2 o...

I loved my stay at the Great Wall Box House. The dorm was clean, spacious and quiet.
I really enjoyed the group dinner at night. It's perfect to meet people when you are traveling by yourself! This part of the Great Wall is authentic and easy to hike. I really enjoyed it!

The hosts are very helpful, smiley and calm. I needed peacefulness after 2 weeks in Beijing and that was the perfect place for that.
I highly recommend it!
